1 St. Peter s Good NewsJULY / AUGUST 2013 HEART OF THE HOME UPDATE by Cynthia Sosnowski The Heart of the Home team has been hard at work! Thanks to the generosity of so many of our parishioners, we have created and delivered 14 baskets to families returning to their homes after being displaced by Hurricane Sandy and are working with churches up and down the New Jersey coast to identify more families preparing to move back. So far, we ve helped families in Brigantine, Tuckerton, Little Egg Harbor, Long Beach Township, Manahawkin, Mantoloking, Point Pleasant Beach, Normandy Beach, Bay Head, and Point Pleasant Boro. To learn more about this project, check out our display in the narthex and please consider joining us one Sunday to organize items and pack baskets. Contact Cynthia Sosnowski at jcsos1@comcast.net or sign up in the narthex to be put on the distribution list for announcements of when we will be organizing and packing. In addition to the tremendous work here at St. Peters, Church of the Advent, Cape May, Grace Church, Pemberton, St. Barnabas, Monmouth, and St. Timothy s Church, Iola, Kansas, have all joined our team helping to make this project happen. A big thank you to Jaime Smith for helping to deliver baskets and for the excellent photos of the area, the newspapers are no longer showing photos of the parts of the Jersey Shore that is NOT yet open for business! 2 FROM PULPIT TO PEW by The Reverend Canon Donald J. Muller Summer is here, yeah! If you are like me, you have scaled back your scheduled activities. That doesn t mean that you are less busy, however. I can t tell you how often I have gone on vacation and come home even more tired. I like to see it all, do it all. When we go to theme parks, we tend to get there at opening and leave at closing. I want to make a case for myself, and I hope for you, that you carve out time for quiet reflection, prayer, spiritual reading, and even going to Church. Here are a couple of prayers inviting us into a little different schedule: #59 For Quiet Confidence (BCP, page 832) O God of peace, who hast taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and confidence shall be our strength. By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. #32 For the Good Use of Leisure (BCP, page 825) O God, in the course of this busy life, give us times of refreshment and peace; and grant that we may so use our leisure to rebuild our bodies and renew our minds, that our spirits my be opened to the goodness of your creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Throughout the Gospels Jesus makes time to worship at the Temple or synagogues and to pray to the Father, off by himself. If it was good enough for Jesus, it should be good enough for the rest of us. In Webster s On line Dictionary the word recreate is defined as a transitive verb meaning: to give new life or freshness to : REFRESH. Summer is a good time to re-create our whole selves: mind, body, and spirit. Please don t forget about your spirit. If you are running or walking, perhaps you might thank God for your surroundings, the ocean, trees, nature, etc. Or listen to Christian music, hymns, the Bible, and more. Y our could schedule in some quiet time sitting on the deck, poolside, on the beach. We ve pulled some books out of the church library for some suggested summer reading. Feel free to take a book, fill out the card, and enjoy the read. We have fiction and nonfiction, as well as books for children. RE-CREATE YOUR SPIRIT this summer as well as your body and mind. In Christ, Fr. Don 2

3 BODY & SOUL By Edith Green, R.N. Worry: 1. To disturb the peace of mind. 2. To give way to anxiety. 3. Interest paid on trouble that hasn t come due. Worrying is not only an annoying habit, but it is also spiritually counter productive. When worry becomes a familiar state of mind, it can be hard to wrap our mind around a NEW paradigm, but this is essential because what we choose to put our attention on will increase. This is the law of cause and effect: what you put in, you get out. This spiritual principle, which is a close relative of THE GOLDEN RULE (do unto others as you would have them do unto you) shows if we worry that we won t ever find our perfect sweetheart, then that worry becomes a belief, and acts as a cause in our experience, and NOT finding a sweetheart will CONTINUE to be the effect. If we turn our attention to what IS working we attract more of that into our lives. So, as gratitude is the antidote to resentment it is also the antidote to worry. Another important spiritual tool in the battle against worry, especially chronic worry, is faith. When we have more faith in spirit to heal and sustain us than in the forces of society to rob us, we won t have much use for worry. When we laugh at our worries we can sometimes view them through a lighter heart, and they lose political power over our mind. And Finally: A man ALWAYS worried. Worry, worry, worry. The man found a spiritual teacher whom he loved very much. The teacher forbade him to worry. He stopped. (The preceding was taken from Spiritual doodles and Mental Leapfrogs by Katherine Q. Revoir.) MEN S FELLOWSHIP By John Colaianni St. Peter s Men s Fellowship is based on the pursuit of bringing us closer to God and His teachings. We hope to inspire and to help each other to be the sons, the husbands, the fathers, and the brothers and uncles and Godfathers and mentors and friends that we strive to be and should be. This goal we hope to accomplish through prayer, support, and friendship both inside and outside the walls of St. Peter s Episcopal Church. This summer, we are running an outing to attend Philadelphia Eagles Training Camp. On Sunday, July 28th, we will meet at St. Peter s between 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m., and will carpool to Lincoln Financial Field. This gives you plenty of advance notice to plan to attend either the Saturday 5:00 p.m. or Sunday morning 7:45 a.m. services that weekend! The tickets and parking are free, and we hope to enjoy the first public practice of the Coach Chip Kelly era, together. Tickets are limited. Please respond to Wardens Ken Montgomery or John Colaianni to RSVP. Happy Summer! 3

6 KIDS CORNER By Sue Legnani, Director of Christian Formation RECREATION...RE-CREATION In the word recreation we see a new word: re-creation. Our summer time can be a time of re-creation as we take vacations or even staycations, the new term that means staying at home and taking day trips for a few days of at home vacationing. What does re-creation have to do with creation? I d like to think that after my vacation I m re-created in some new way. I have a better out look on life after getting away from the daily stresses and strains of life. I hope to feel a little more rested and generally in a better mood after being away from my usual routine. But I also feel re-created when I have the opportunity to be out in nature, whether that s in my garden, or doing a little bird watching in my backyard or at the Jersey shore. I think it s always easier for me to see God in nature than in any other place. It also makes me appreciate the natural beauty around me and it makes me want to do something to preserve the creation God has given all of us to enjoy. Over the next few weeks you will receive through a series of meditations you can do at home with your family. Although it may look like something you would do just with children, it can be done by folks of any age. (Besides, it never hurts to get in touch with your inner child.) Please try some of the exercises yourself, and with your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews you get the idea. Rediscover the creative gifts God has given you and take the time to share it with someone else. After all, that s what God has done for us. Look for Creation coming to your box. If you don t have , copies can be found in the Narthex. Please take one and feel free to pass it along to others. In Christ, Sue Legnani 6

8 DEACON S BENCH By Deacon Helen Orlando Dear Friends, Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and caring since the death of my father. Your many cards, and the much-appreciated support you continue to offer, mean a lot to me and my family. Much of my summer will be spent travelling back and forth between here and my father s home in California. Wherever I am, I will continue to pray for all of you and will carry your love with me. Faithfully, Deacon Helen Thank You to all who offered their linguistic talents to make our celebration of the Day of Pentecost more meaningful! They are: Natalie Boyle and Mekenzie Montgomery, English Sue Crawford and Mike Orlando, Latin Barbara Dane, Anita Beard, and Tiffany Myers, French Edie Green, Ken Montgomery, and Katiusca McEntee, Spanish Annie Brown, Danish Dickey Zawitkowski, Polish George Buchanan, German Did You Know? Recently, chaplains of the Seamen s Church Institute learned that the traditional Watch Cap, knit by thousands of volunteers and gifted to mariners from around the world since 1898 through the SCI s Christmas at Sea program, did not keep the seamen s ears warm. So, the Institute sponsored a contest to develop a new pattern which would both meet the seamen s needs and meet the strict workplace safety restrictions in place for the seamen s clothing. And the winner is (drum roll, please!) Maurice and Charlene Marietti s daughter, Kristine Byrnes! To learn more about the Christmas at Sea program and to see a picture of the hat, modeled by Kristine s husband, please go to the following link and click on 1898 hat. sci-1898-hat.pdf. and, Did You Notice? Our celebration of Pentecost was graced (?) by the rustling of wings and cawing of a family of birds nesting in the organ chamber. Although several people made jokes about the rustling wings representing the coming of the Holy Spirit, what was truly interesting was that the birds were nearly silent for the entire 10:15am service, except during the Sanctus (Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might Makes one think of the very last verse of the Psalms: Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." Hallelujah! (Psalm 150, v 6). 8
