The late Reverend David Smith Beryl Smith and her daughters, Sarah and Katie, would like to express their thanks and appreciation for all the wonderful support and care throughout Reverend David Smith's illness and in our bereavement. Many thanks to Reverend Stephen Burrow, Deborah and Jane plus the many friends in our great village community who helped out in so many practical and prayerful ways. The Café on the Green Our Macmillan Coffee Morning on 28 th September raised a fantastic 420 A huge thank you to all those who supported this in any way. Cover Illustration by Tom Dodd, influenced by Minds at War - The poetry and experience of the First World War (Ed. D. Roberts). Words from the poem Armistice by Andrew Motion, Pte Roy Douglas Harvey s headstone in Bouchoir New British Cemetery in France bears the words: My task accomplished and the long day done. The Prattler is produced by volunteers and is supported by donations from the Parish Council, the Parish Church, the Baptist Church, Heyford W.I., Heyford Garden Club, Heyford Singers and Heyford Picturedrome as well as the advertisers. Thanks are also due to the volunteers who distribute it every month. 2

The October meeting of Nether Heyford Parish Council was held on Oct 1st, 2018 at the Baptist Church Rooms. Public Participation. Cllr Harries informed that Council that he had just returned from SNC s Grants Panel and was pleased to report that the Bowls Club grant application for 4,000 had been successful. A member of the public enquired if it would be possible for residents to be encouraged to clean the debris from verges in front of their homes and also to take part in a village tidy up day around the Village Green. The Chairman suggested that an article be included in the next edition of the Prattler and include information on the village Facebook page and website. It could be argued that we are in a difficult period regarding public funding of services which have been taken for granted before. If residents were prepared to take some responsibility for clearing litter, weeds and leaves from the area fronting their properties the village might look a lot better. A resident asked the Council about areas of overgrown grass and what was happening about the road closure on the road leading to Upper Heyford from Nether Heyford. The Chairman responded that grass mowing was in hand. Road Closure. The issue relating to a gas leak and subsequent road closure was still ongoing as the gas leak is proving difficult to locate. The road closure has been frustrating for all, but it is hoped (as of Oct 17th) that the issue is now solved and the road fully open for the foreseeable future. If the closure had been due to Highways work we would have been kept informed; but the work was being carried out by an Utilities company (Cadent), and they have powers to close roads without reference to Highways. Presentation by the Environmental Agency. Flood Risk Management Project Representatives of the Environmental Agency, Tom Lester and Catherine Chinn addressed the Council on the recent activity relating to Nether Heyford. The purpose of the visit was to update the Council on the situation relating to flood risk as planned capital works had not taken place as anticipated. It was explained that the reason for the lack of progress was due to the results of a mapping exercise. The findings of which revealed that the situation relating to the flood risk was not as extensive as first thought. Future works are unlikely to take place before 2021 as there is a need to secure funding. Anglian Water and Northants County Council are being approached to see if they are prepared to contribute. On a positive note a 3

recent development that concerns the revenue works e.g. maintenance, has taken place locally to elevate flooding around Nether Heyford. There has been an update on the flood warning area to reflect changes - all those affected by these changes will be notified by the Environmental Agency and encouraged to sign up to the flood warning services. Leaflets are being produced for distribution. Allotments. Cllr Corner reported that the order for the 27 fruit trees had been placed and that the Allotment Management Group are busy putting together a plan to plant the trees in the Community Orchard. There are now 32 Allotment Holders renting 45 plots of land with a further 14 plots vacant and available for letting, 7 plots given over to community use and wildlife and 10 plots allocated to the Community Orchard. 6 During November we shall be praying for people living in Church Street and Manor Walk in Heyford, Kings Lane and The Orchard in Flore, Main Street in Upper Stowe and the Apartments in Brockhall Hall. Dear Friends, This month we mark the hundredth anniversary of the end of hostilities on the Western Front; effectively, the end of the First World War. The armistice document agreed and signed near Paris at 5:00AM on 11 th November 1918 came into effect six hours later, the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. At that point, the guns fell silent for the first time in over four years. Can we even begin to imagine what people felt at the time? For the soldiers in the trenches; a real sense of relief, the happiness of having survived the most brutal of wars, and a deep sadness for the many friends and comrades who had died in the fighting. And for their families and friends at home, similar mixed feelings; joy that the war was over, hope that loved ones would soon be home, and a growing sadness at the appalling cost of the conflict. Was there, I wonder, an increasing determination that such a war should never happen again? I m sure there must have been, yet within a generation, the world was once again plunged into a yet more costly and brutal war. It used to be that Remembrance Sunday focussed only on the two world wars of the last century. But in the 21 st Century, we note with great sadness that war, violence and terror continue; there are still millions of victims of fighting and conflict. As we celebrate the coming of peace at the end of the Great War, as we remember and honour those who gave their lives so that we might continue to enjoy peace and freedom, as we remember and honour those who continue to risk their lives for our safety, and for the liberty of others, let us also remember those who still suffer because of today s wars, and pray for solutions to be sought. And let s try to be the answers to our own prayers as we strive for peace in our homes, our communities, our nation and our world. So, as we celebrate and work for peace, let s remember St. Francis prayer for peace: Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, let us bring forgiveness; where there is doubt, let us offer faith; where there is darkness, let us bring light; where there is despair, let us offer hope; where there is sadness, let us bring joy. For it is giving that we receive; it is in forgiving that we are forgiven; and in dying that we are born again to eternal life. Amen Yours in Christ, 6

The Royal British Legion Womens Section Remembrance Sunday Parade To our fallen soldiers you have done your duty. To honour is ours sees 100 years since the end of the first world war please come and join us to remember the fallen. Our annual parade is on Sunday 11 th November. The parade will start from Bliss Charity School at 10.15am for a 10.30am service at St Peter and Paul s Church Nether Heyford. We will aim to arrive at the war memorial for 11:15am. All welcome Polite notice. Please can we kindly ask when visiting the shop on this day that you do not obstruct the war memorial. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. Bells for Remembrance; bells for celebration Our church bells have long been associated with marking significant national and local events, both in celebration and sadness. A date that we always mark is Remembrance Sunday when, at Heyford, we ring half muffled for the church service. Half muffled simply means that alternate strokes or sounds of the bells are quietened by a special leather muffle that is fitted to deaden the sound of each bell. You can hear this on Sunday 11 November prior to the service in the Parish Church. In addition to this, we will be ringing later on the same day. The bells, however, will have no muffles on ( ie open ) for it will be a celebration a celebration to mark the centenary of the ending of the First World War. This is a part of a national move to have all the church bells in the country (or as many as possible) ring at around lunchtime. Heyford and Flore have a joint band of bell-ringers and we will be ringing open in celebration at the following times: Heyford 11.45am Flore 12.30pm Please listen out for us as we help our villages to reflect on the mixed sadness and joy that must have been felt 100 years ago. 8

In Nether Heyford The AGM at our October Meeting was very well attended and the President and Committee are ready to start a new year. After the business part of the evening we were encouraged to sing for our supper by Renee Watt. She had tried to teach us Line Dancing way back in April but on this visit we all had percussion instruments and sang along to her accompaniment on guitar. Some songs we knew, some we didn t and some we even made up as we went along. Who knows, you may even see the WI Busker's outside the One Stop! The next Meeting will be the last of the year as December will be our Christmas Party. We will be at the Village Hall on Thursday November 1 st at 7.30 to hear Denise Cowling talking on Antiques and Collectibles. Denise has much experience as she is an Auctioneer and Gemologist at Gilding s Auctioneers of Market Harborough. She will be bringing articles to demonstrate her talk and I have been told that there may well be a quiz afterwards to see how well we have listened!! The cost for non-members will be 5 and will include refreshments so why not come along, ladies - you will be very welcome. Bugbrooke and District Flower Society We invite you to join us at our monthly meetings to relax and watch demonstrations by a fully qualified NAFAS Area or National Demonstrator. This is followed by refreshments and the opportunity to win one of the arrangements in our raffle. Learn how to arrange and enjoy flowers. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of the month at 7.45pm in Nether Heyford village hall. Our next meeting is on Monday 26 th November when we look forward to our special Christmas demonstration by Janet Cooper giving us So This is Christmas. A warm welcome awaits both new members and visitors and those new to flower arranging are especially welcome. For more information please follow us on Facebook or contact Dianne on or Simone on

Governor Vacancy - The Bliss Charity School As a result of a recent retirement, The Bliss Charity School has a vacancy for a Governor. What do Governors do? The volunteer Governing Body provides strategic leadership and accountability at The Bliss Charity School. It has three key functions: Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent Holding the head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction The Governors set the aims and objectives for the school and set the policies and targets for achieving those aims and objectives. We monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making and act as a source of challenge and support to the head teacher. What sort of person are we looking for? Schools need a range of professional knowledge (in addition to education) on the governing body including finance, human resources, legal, marketing and public relations, property and estates management, and organisational change. We are particularly keen to hear from those from a finance/accountancy background, or with buildings/facilities management experience, but this is not essential. The most important attributes are time to dedicate to attending meetings a few times per school term (usually early evenings), and a commitment to supporting school staff to enable every pupil to achieve their potential. Do I have to have a connection with the School or the Village already? Absolutely not! It is important for us to find someone from beyond the immediate families of pupils of the School on this occasion, as we already have a number of parents on the Governing Body. It is not necessary to be a resident of Nether Heyford, so please do share this vacancy with anyone you think may be interested in the position. For more information we would welcome enquiries to the Clerk to the Governors, Lynn Adey who can be contacted by calling into School, by telephoning School on or by bursar@bliss.northants.sch.uk. 11

Revitalising the Allotments What s growing? I suppose the obvious answer is not a lot at the moment. However, there is a surprisingly large amount still to be done. Giving some TLC to the soil by weeding and mulching/covering, as well as repairing any wooden edging you might have, means that when the Spring arrives you are ready to begin sowing and planting. There is nothing worse than being confronted by a sea of weeds or lots of repairs when all you want to do is get growing. And what better way to work out - so much cheaper than the gym! Despite the shorter days and colder nights many things keep growing and providing a welcome harvest. Beetroot store well in the ground (at least until the harder frosts come along). And crops such as parsnips, leeks and Brussels Sprouts positively love the cold weather. A beautifully mild October has even enabled us to continue pick a late sowing of salad leaves. Clearance and New Plots There are now a number of smaller plots that have been cleared and covered and are ready for new tenants. For less that 25 a year you could rent a small piece of land and grow your own fruit and veg. Taking on an allotment at this time of the year also enables you to prepare it ready for growing in If you are interested, contact either Sue Corner on or Lynda Eales on Community Orchard A big, big thank you to all those village organisations, businesses and families who have offered to sponsor a fruit tree for our community orchard. We are only six trees short of our target of thirty trees. If you would like to contribute it is still not too late. A donation of 25 will buy a tree and if we are able to exceed our target then surplus money will enable us to buy tree stakes, ties and mulch. Final land clearance and levelling of our site commences in the first week of November and trees will be planted in the weeks that follow. A list of the fruits and varieties will be published in the next edition of the Prattler. There is a wonderful selection of trees, chosen and selected for us by heritage tree specialist Andy Howard. It will be good to at last start planting and we are hopeful that some of those good folk who have contributed will be able to join us at this special time. For more information on anything in this article don t hesitate to contact Sue or Lynda on the numbers above, alternatively you can contact me by on: langrish_heyford@hotmail.com Your support is really appreciated. 12

Village Hall Hello, my name is Alwyne Wilson and I m pleased to have taken over as Chairman of the Village Hall Committee in succession to Ray and Rosemary Hadden, who have retired after serving for six years. First, I want to pay tribute to them both for their dedicated commitment to the village hall. As a result of all their hard work, in co-operation with other members of the Management Committee, the hall is in excellent condition, warm and attractive which, in turn has attracted more users. Nether Heyford s village hall sits at the heart of our community and it is a privilege although quite a challenge to follow Ray and Rosemary and I shall do my best to maintain the high standards which have been set. My background? I have enjoyed working with a wide range of community, voluntary and charitable organisations over the years and, since moving to the village 35 years ago, my husband Bob and I were able join a variety of village organisations, all based at the village hall. I m keen to give something back for all the benefits we enjoyed. We now have another new recruit to our Management Committee: Richard Musson. Richard and his family have lived in the village for 38 years and his children all attended the village school as do his grandchildren now. He is also keen to contribute to the village, using his extensive business experience. Two items of information: there will be no Christmas Tree Festival this year; we felt it was time to give it and the organisers a rest. But it may be back in the future. But the Pantomime is coming back: Jack and the Beanstalk on Friday 28 December at 2pm. In the December issue of the Prattler we ll announce ticket prices and where to buy them. Availability will be limited so in the meantime note the date in your diaries. 14

Inclusion in Nether Heyford Over the past few weeks, the notion of loneliness and social isolation has been not only discussed on national platforms such as the Government s push for higher quality social housing to help address the associated stigma but also locally as an element of our own Neighbourhood Plan policies Social Inclusion is where everyone feels welcome. Social exclusion is when individuals or families are prevented from participating fully in the economic, social, and political life of the village. Add to this risk factors such as social background, the inability to drive and the discouragement to join groups or associations, and rural social cohesion is particularly under threat. Promoting social inclusion embraces intangibles like self-worth. People can feel lonely and socially excluded in a relatively well-off village like Nether Heyford, when they are without support, economically disadvantaged, where their self confidence is dented, and where they feel they are made to feel out of place with other people. Bullying is a particular abhorrent face of social exclusion which has causal links to depression and risk of suicide. Why is this important to the Neighbourhood Plan? Wellbeing is the central foundation of the Plan. The wellbeing of villagers and of the village itself. Social inclusion is one of the keystones to support wellbeing. The nature of housing, its position in the village, the integration of pathways and roads, the refusal to isolate communities within the village, to push back cheap, minimal builds with little space to flourish, ensuring access to green spaces, are all important factors that are part of our discussions and policies. We look to promote healthy mixed neighbourhoods, where high quality build and a rich village life are much better aspirations for all. Anyone who behaves differently from what s seen as normal may become subject to coarse or more subtle forms of social exclusion. People may feel on the fringe although they are physically within the village. Consider the isolation from society that some veterans feel after a prolonged service in the armed forces, dealing with separation, loss and, for many, acquired mental health problems. They need thoughtful and helpful strategies to readjust to life to negate the social exclusion that many of them experience. Our Plan believes that access to affordable, decent housing is a basic precondition for a dignified human life. Along with the majority of villagers, we will always defend a socially inclusive Plan that offers all households, particularly those with low or very low incomes not only a significant improvement in their quality of life but also a supportive environment, favourable to their growth as individuals, as families and as members of this village. 16

Heyford Garden Club On 8th October we welcomed Hazel Roberts of Jam MK who gave advice on how to reduce the annual problem for gardeners, the oversupply of fruit and vegetables, and what to do with the inevitable surpluses. No matter how carefully one plans the sowing and planting the crops always seem to come at once so some innovative ways of dealing with the extra bounty is needed, once the freezer is full and friends and neighbours have taken all that they want. My own struggles with a mountain of green tomatoes resulted in jars of pickled tomatoes (not bad) and green tomato and apple jam (better than expected!). Our next meeting will be on 12th November which will be our biennial plant swap and art and craft competition. This year I may have said this about other seasons, but this year has been really peculiar. A cold wet spring meant that little would grow early on, then the summer turned out to have record breaking heat and almost no rain. My greens plants shrivelled up despite being given buckets of water, but the tomatoes, squashes sweet corn and courgette's revelled in the heat. This year I tried an experiment growing callaloo (a leafy vegetable much liked in the Caribbean) which was a great success, and would even look good in a flower border. How it will perform in a more normal year remains to be seen. Another new vegetable for me was edamame beans, again definitely worth another try next year. Our dahlias were surprisingly happy in the heat and drought, (apart from the Bishop of Llandaff type which just refused to flower). Our raspberries were terrible, but the currants black and red were excellent. I wished I'd had figs or grapes as this seems to have been a really good year for them. Another casualty of the dry weather was our family of hedgehogs who were forced to forage in the daytime for lack of food so we and our neighbours put food out for them. Even so one poor little mite succumbed to starvation despite the best efforts of the local vet. This is a reminder that the summer period can actually be the most difficult for wildlife and water and food will be very important for birds and other creatures when it is dry and hot. Three Jobs for November 1. Put grease bands on fruit trees to stop winter moth damage 2. Prune roses to prevent wind rock 3. Plant tulip bulbs 17

Nether Heyford War Memorial The unveiling of the Memorial took place on Sunday 20 th February 1921, and was reported in the Northampton Independent as follows: Heyford War Memorial - The Scene at the unveiling In memory of 23 soldiers from Heyford who lost their lives in the war, a cross was unveiled on Sunday afternoon. It stands on the green at the junction of four cross roads, a most appropriate site, although a few villagers agitated for it to be erected in the churchyard. The ceremony of unveiling was performed by Lieut-Col. Livingstone-Learmouth, C.M.G.,D.S.O., R.H.A., of Heyford Manor, who read the inscription, which is as follows:- In affectionate and grateful remembrance of the men of Heyford who gave their lives in the Great War, The cross, which was designed and executed by Messrs. J.G. Pullen and Sons, of Bridge Street, Northampton, is 10 feet high and is made of granite, with carved interlaced work on the front. There was a short open-air service conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. Isham Longden, M.A., assisted by the Rev. H.W. Batstone, Baptist minister of Bugbrooke, the school children led the singing of the hymns O God, our help in ages past and When I survey the Wondrous Cross, buglers sounded the Last Post and Reveille, and the service closed with the National Anthem. In the appropriate impressive address, the Vicar said it was fitting that the cross should be at the four cross roads. That stone spoke to them of heroism, selfsacrifice, remembrance - a symbol of honour and love. The memories of the fallen would never pass away, nor could they ever forget the courage of the stricken in the hospitals as he saw them and the patience and pluck of the broken men who had returned to our midst. We hardly realised from what England had been spared and the pinnacle to which the country had risen. Their care should now be to promote the righteousness which exalteth a nation. After the service there was a touching procession of the bereaved with floral tributes, which they placed around the cross. The sunny spring-like afternoon brought out many visitors from the neighbouring villages, there being a congregation of over

Stowe War Memorial The unveiling of the Stowe Memorial took place on Sunday 21 st November 1920 and was reported in the Northampton Independent as follows: Stowe War Memorial - The Scene at the unveiling In spite of the cold and foggy weather on Sunday afternoon, a large congregation attended the unveiling of the war memorial to the men of Stowe-Nine-Churches who fell in the war. An impressive service was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. H.H. Crawley, assisted by the Rev. C.G.C. Walker, Vicar of Weedon, who delivered an address, and the Rev. W.H. Shackel, Rector of Brockhall. The first part of the service took place in the Church, after which the congregation proceeded to the village green, where the memorial was unveiled by Colonel J.C. Livingstone Learmouth, D.S.O., and dedicated by the Vicar. The Last Post and the Reveille were sounded and the service concluded with the Benediction and the National Anthem. The memorial, which was designed and executed by Messrs. J.G. Pullen and Sons, Northampton, takes the form of a very handsome Celtic cross with beautifully carved interlaced work on its face, and stands ten feet high. The base bears the following inscription in leaded letters: Pro Deo, Rege, et Patria. This cross was erected in grateful memory of all who gave their lives in the Great War of , Requiescant in Pace" Northampton Herald - Newspaper Articles HEYFORD - Thanks - Lance Corporal William French and other Heyford Soldiers of the Expeditionary Force have written to kindly thank the ladies of the parish for the comforts they have forwarded to them. 23 Flood Risk Management in Nether Heyford Potential scheme update Nether Heyford was identified back in 2012 as a potential location for a scheme to reduce flood risk from Heyford Brook. We carried out new computer-based water and flood level modelling to investigate further. This revealed that less properties are at risk from Heyford Brook than previously thought, which is great news. Longer term solutions to reduce flood risk are funded based on the amount of properties they can better protect from flooding. As the number of properties at risk has reduced, so has the amount of funding available, which unfortunately leaves us with fewer options. We remain committed to finding ways to reduce flood risk for the remaining properties, working hard with partners including Anglian Water. The flood warning area in Nether Heyford will be changing from the 21 November 2018 to reflect the changes made by the new water and flood model. We will write to each property to explain what this means for them. Please make sure you are signed up to receive this flood warning, so we can let you know if any flooding is expected from Heyford Brook, Bugbrooke Brook or the River Nene. This is really easy to do, just visit or call Floodline on Maintenance activity Each year we can also bid for money to carry out maintenance on our brooks and rivers. Having been successful with this, we have completed work to help the flow of water through the village including: 1. Realignment of the East Culvert outlet structure The walls and safety screens have been changed where the East Culvert joins Bugbrooke Brook to allow the culvert to empty properly into the brook when river levels are high. 23

2. Flow improvement of Bugbrooke Brook A stretch of Bugbrooke Brook has been widened to help water flow more easily when the river is high. A ledge has been created, which will remain dry during low flows and carry water only when the river level is high. 3. River Nene silt removal Silt and vegetation from a stretch of the River Nene from Middle Street Road Bridge to the outlet of Bugbrooke Brook has been removed, restoring the natural profile of the river bed and improves water flows downstream of the bridge. For further information, or if you have any questions, please the Welland and Nene Partnership and Strategic Overview team at PSOWN@environmentagency.gov.uk. 24

On Sunday 11 th November 2018, in a few days time, the anniversary of the end of the First World War will be marked throughout the country, and the world. For the past four years we have commemorated, paid tribute and learnt about the lives of the millions who went to war, a hundred years ago, and never returned. As the guns fell silent and the fighting stopped on that memorable day, so the awareness of what we had lost from the barn and the forge and the mill and the fold, became painfully obvious. Personal grief was apparent in the grainy photographs of lost fathers, sons and brothers, displayed and treasured through the years and generations that followed. Public grief for all to see was etched in the names carved on memorials in village squares and gravestones, on the Menin Gate and on the Thiepval Memorial. Collective grief, for almost the hundred years, has been the annual Service of Remembrance, the two minutes silence, and the wearing of poppies. During these past four years of memory and commemoration we have celebrated very different types of music associated with WW1. The songs sang by the soldiers, It s a Long Way to Tipperary, Roses of Picardy, Pack up Your Troubles and many, many others have been included in talks, films, documentaries, sung in concerts and other gatherings all around the country. Remember that day two years ago, on the 1 st July 2016, when thousands of volunteers took part in a countrywide event to mark the centenary of the Battle of the Somme when 19,240 men were killed on the first day of fighting. We re here because we re here was sung repeatedly by groups of the 1400 voluntary participants dressed in First World War uniform, each one representing a soldier killed on that day one hundred years ago. They stood first in silent groups, then they sang, unaccompanied, the words of the song again and again and again. The power of music, and silence, to remember, to move us emotionally, is strong and can never be underestimated. We remember also with music written more recently. A few days ago a concert was held in a packed Royal Albert Hall. It was inspired by the centenary of the end of the First World War, and included the world premiere of Patrick Hawes The Great War Symphony performed by RPO, a youth choir, singers from the Invictus Games, and Royal Marine drummers. During the symphony large screens showed footage of the war, heartbreaking images it was a very moving experience. And so to 11 th November 2018, 100 years since Armistice, when church bells will ring out in unison from churches and cathedrals in villages, towns and cities across the country. As a way of marking the final year of the First World War centenary commemorations, 1,400 new bell ringers have been recruited in honour of the 1,400 that lost their lives during WW1. Church bells across the country remained silent 25

throughout the war and only rang freely once Armistice was declared on This campaign to recruit bell ringers, Ringing Remembers, will hopefully keep this tradition of art and music alive, in memory of those who lost their lives linking together past, present and future. From the memory of millions to the memory of one very special man, David Smith, who died on 22 nd September. David was a stalwart of our local community and will be much missed by everyone who knew him. A church minister, David retired to the village in the late 1990 s to be nearer his family. He soon became actively involved, not only in the Church of St Peter and St Paul, but also with Heyford Singers which allowed him to devote time to his love of music and singing. David had a rich melodious voice, a joy to listen to, both in readings and songs. Although his church ministry had acquainted him with the many forms of religious music, David was not averse to the increasingly varied repertoire of the Heyford Singers. With dogged determination, a wry smile and a twinkle in his eye he would practice and perform everything from Abba songs, James Bond themes, Beatles songs and Broadway shows! Despite the challenges during the past few years, of cancer, mobility and age, David never gave up. He was very disappointed not to take part in the Spring Concert this year, being in hospital. Still in care in September when rehearsals began for the Christmas concert, David requested all the scores of the songs that were to be sung, so that he could practice in anticipation that he would be there and performing! That sadly will not be the case, but the spirit of David will live on for us all, in the music and songs that he loved so much. At his memorial service the choir were privileged to sing two songs that David had requested, including the beautiful Homeward Bound sung by his fellow tenors and basses In the quiet misty morning when the moon has gone to bed, When the sparrows stop their singing and the sky is clear and red. When the summer s ceased its gleaming, when the corn is past its prime, When adventure s lost its meaning, I ll be homeward bound in time. Bind me not to pasture; chain me not to the plough, Set me free to find my calling and I ll return to you somehow. 29 Heyford Bowls Club The BENCO SHIELD, was played on Saturday 13 th October. A very good turnout saw 8 teams competing for the trophy. A different format was adopted this year, changing it from the usual mixed pairs. Each pair played two games with the highest points plus scores winners progressing to the final. The final produced a very high standard of bowling and after 6 ends was tied at 5 each. An extra end was played resulting in a win for Graham Drake and Rosemary Dunkley over Brian Alder and Morris Freeman by the final score of 9 to 5. Well done both teams for producing such a high quality and entertaining final. We are entering the winter league with our first match away at Syresham on Thursday 18 th October. Don t forget a very competitive match on the 10 th November, the LADIES v MEN. This will prove a very interesting game, with bragging rights lasting at least a year. It was nice to welcome two new players on Wednesday 10 th October. Bowling during these long winter months can be very enjoyable. You will be given a warm welcome if you would like to give it a try. Just turn up at one of our Wednesday sessions in the village hall at either 1.40pm or 7.10pm. 31 Flore Arts Events At the end of a third successful year where we ve already raised more than 5,000 for local charity - adding to the 10,000 we raised in the first two years - we re signing off with one more event, one which promises to be a real hum-dinger BUDAPEST CAFÉ ORCHESTRA Led by leading violinist and composer, Christian Garrick, the Budapest Café Orchestra play traditional folk and gypsy-flavoured music with an exotic twist. Expect an evening of raucous, toe-tapping Balkan and Russian numbers played with immense skill, great verve and profound musicianship and more than a hint of jazz and swing. Here are just a few reviews The Music is magic in their hands A gypsy style quartet with a talent for fun Thrillingly inventive Balkan brilliance Christian (aka Balkan Bob ) is the real deal in the jazz violin world. Rave reviews from national press have included this from the Telegraph: Christian Garrick has revitalised jazz violin playing so that it has been rejuvenated for the 21st century. Whilst still able to play in the tradition established by Stephane Grappelli Christian has forged his own style which reflects his contemporary interests. When he s not fronting the band he s likely to be found teaching at the Royal Academy of Music or the Royal College of Music, and he can list performing for the royal family at Prince Charles 50 th birthday party among his many notable credits. Chris will be joined by his fellow bandmates Kelly Cantlon ( Kelvin the Klaw ) on double bass, Eddie Hession ( The Dragon ) on accordion and last but not least Adrian Zolotuhin ( The Sultan ) on a range of instruments familiar and not-sofamiliar: guitar, domra and saz for starters! Saturday November 17 th, All Saints Church, Flore. 7.30pm. Call Rosemary Read (between 9am and 8pm) on for tickets: 15 (U18s 5) The calendar s already taking shape for next year. There will be return visits from local favourites Northampton Male Voice Choir and the Northants County Youth Big Band plus some new events too. Don t forget to keep an eye out for updates on our website at and our Facebook page. We ll also be providing more information in future editions of the Prattler. We hope to see you soon! 31
