JNAC Update This brief announcement is to simply remind the members of the McClure congregation that the work of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC) remains ongoing. Indeed, the committee had now met four times since late August. Recent work has included receiving and assessing input from most of the standing committees of the Board and giving broad-based consideration to how we might

3 be best determine our future ministerial team member requirements. The work is challenging and yet at the same time it is recognized that it is an opportune time for our church to pause and reflect as we move toward embracing the potentially exciting times ahead. In this, we are doing our best to recognize our strengths, to consider our vulnerabilities, and to discover new opportunities for our members. The committee thanks the congregation for its patience as we carry out the work of JNAC, and we ask for your prayers of support as we undertake our deliberations. As always, you are welcome to speak to any member of the committee to provide your thoughts and comments. The members of JNAC include: Jim Kells, Chair ( ) Joanne Hamlin ( ) Kendall Knuttila ( ) Leyta Ducasse ( ) Carl Krause ( ) Linda Dietz ( ) Norm Biram ( ) Lynn Bayne, Presbytery ( ) Rev. Dave Moors, Presbytery ( ) Flowers are placed in the sanctuary today to the glory of God and in loving memory of Ron Nutbrown (former Charter Member) by Elaine, Allan & Deb, Shelley & Bob Focus on Outreach For many years, McClure has worked closely with ICM in community ministry on Avenue V. One of the programs we support is Chop n Chat. A nutritious lunch is served once a week. People feel welcome; it is a safe non-judgemental place. Over time relationships build. Opportunities open to work towards reconciliation. Chop n Chat employs two people from the community. They become ICM s connection to others who live in the area. Having this small job builds their confidence and mentoring improves their job skills. One of the workers mentored last year has returned to school this fall. McClure, in partnership with Holy Spirit Catholic Church, provides two volunteers to be part of this food preparation team. We have taken on the month of November. If you are available Wednesday from 10-2pm this might be the opportunity you are looking for! Check the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board. Besides volunteers, McClure also supports ICM with cash. Money collected from three months of bottle recycling will provide the groceries for several meals. Last year the Outreach budget designated $2000 to support ICM programs in the core. McClure is at work in our community! Reminders: Follow us on Facebook for up to date events and reminders The Food Bank barrel is in the church foyer. Donations are always welcome. Deadline for newsletter submissions is November 19 th. Please them in electronic form to: brendazuk@sasktel.net Time and talent sheets are located on the Legacy Giving Stewardship rack in the church foyer. The Friendship Inn Pasta bin is also in the church foyer - Donations are appreciated. McClure United Church s new website: mcclureunitedchurch.org Extra copies of the monthly newsletter are available in the literature rack directly outside the church office doors.

Tickets are $20 and are available from the college or by calling (306) A note from Kathy Bigsby Floyd and Nina Bigsby s daughter Nina Bigsby passed away October 20 peacefully, two years to the day after Floyd. As a family, we were all together this summer, and since we are far-flung we have decided to have a memorial service for her at a later time. While this sits well with us, we are sensitive to not wanting to leave out her McClure friends, and others who may want to celebrate her life. Please pass along to the congregation our sincere thanks for all their love and support over the years, particularly as their health failed. Although they were not able to continue to attend Sunday services, we knew they were not forgotten and there were many who continued to hold them in their thoughts and prayers. REMEMBER TO PICK UP YOUR NEWSLETTER IN THE CHURCH FOYER TODAY. Remembering Our Saints November 1 is all Saints Day and I would like to invite you to a special worship to be held in the Sanctuary beginning at 7:00pm. Many cultures and faith traditions have a day set aside to remember those who have died and I think there is real beauty in this tradition. So I would like to invite folks to bring a photo and a few momentous of those they would like to remember to the service. These items will be placed on tables that will surround the sanctuary. We will share in worship together and then spend some time enjoying conversation, coffee and cookies. For more information contact Debra at debra.b@shaw.ca or call the office during the week. Poverty 101 A startling number of Saskatchewan children are living below the poverty line. 1 in 4 children and their families face the daily grind of poverty. The Outreach Committee presents an evening of conversations about poverty and its challenges. Join us Monday, November 13 th at 7 pm in the multipurpose room. The presenter will be ICM s Betty Anne Person. Socks for the Homeless was her brain child so this will also be the kick off for our 2017 project. Carol Claypool will spearhead the project again at McClure. Islam Awareness Day Date: Wednesday, November 1st, 2017 Time: 1pm to 8pm Location: Saskatoon Police Service, 76 25th Street East, Saskatoon, SK, S7K 3P9 Canada is the first country in history to adopt multiculturalism as an official policy in Embracing multiculturalism is accepting the equal opportunity for all humanity, regardless of race or ethnic origin, language, religious affiliation and cultural backgrounds. These differences cause challenges to citizens of Canada, due to misinformation. At the Islamic Center of Saskatoon, we make every effort at opening our doors to all Canadians, ensuring that engagement with

5 different faith groups is encouraged and openly welcomed. The Islamic Center has invited many schools, churches, and organizations in the past to provide insights on the religion of Islam. We would like to express our invitation to your organizations and church members and all citizens of Saskatoon to visit your very own SPS Headquarter to have a better understanding of our faith. The following is what to expect from your visit: Short interactive presentation from our Imam, followed by a question and answer session. Opportunity to speak with young Muslims and their experiences Interactive discussion with Muslim women, regarding women rights Try out the Hijab and apply Henna painting and many more informative tables and booths Cultural snacks and beverages This letter is an open invitation, and we encourage you to attend. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, November 1st, For further information, you can reach us at religiousaffairs@islamiccenter.sk.ca or imam@islamiccenter.sk.ca. Please feel free to call or text at (306) Thank you. Ilyas Sidyot Imam, Islamic Association of Saskatchewan Saskatoon Inc. Magazine Collection Sunday November 5 th Please bring to church foyer newer magazines only. Thank you. Prayer Shawl Ministry McClure s prayer shawl mission is to provide a presence of love and compassion to those who are experiencing struggles and to new residents of Amy McClure House. This ministry is unique in that it responds to the needs within our faith community. Some shawl knitting groups gather at a regular time and place; knowing the recipient of the shawl. Other knitters create shawls at home. The collection of shawls is always being replenished and given away as needed by ministry staff. The Prayer shawl ministry began in 2002 after a small group of people heard a presentation about it at Saskatchewan Conference. They came home with a pattern, a prayer and a desire to start a prayer shawl ministry. The idea was presented to the church board where it was unanimously approved. There are at least six to ten dedicated individuals who knit or crochet shawls and for the most part, they remain anonymous. Whenever the supply is low- a call is made for more shawls and shortly after, prayer shawls mysteriously appear. The original pattern used Bernat Harmony Yarn- in soft pastel colors of mauve, sky blue, moss green, dusty pink, navy and off white. Colors have meaning: joy, friendship, compassion, health, healing, harmony, safety, hope, protection, peace, trust, faith, truth, tranquility, wisdom, insight and courage. Since Bernat Harmony is no longer available, prayer shawls are created using yarn that is soft and cozy, in a variety of patterns. Most prayer shawls are 20 inches wide and inches long. They come in many beautiful patterns and shapes. Triangular shawls measure inches from the shoulder to the point of the triangle. As the shawls are being knit the knitters pray seeking healing, comfort, protection, peace and the love of the Lord. Over the years we have received many thank you notes from individuals who received a prayer shawl saying and how much they appreciated receiving one. Handouts regarding patterns and some prayers are available on the table by the mailboxes.

6 Stewardship is for everybody Stewardship is everyone s concern. Everyone who has given their time, talents and monies to help McClure become the Church community it is practiced stewardship in a most meaningful way. Thank you! This year s upcoming Stewardship campaign is crucial in that McClure United Church is preparing itself for change and how it will respond to change as it awaits findings of the Joint Needs Assessment Committee (JNAC). To do this we must be prepared. Members of the congregation must be willing to participate in this change through the giving of their time, talents and funds. This year Stewardship Sunday is on November 12, While this service will highlight Stewardship, it is really a thing that is practiced year round. To guide us, even when we cannot attend church, our latest version of the website lists church past sermons, newsletters and upcoming church activities. Plans are underway to further develop the website to include things such as family ritual and prayer resources. We invite you to visit mcclureunitedchurch.org to explore and learn more about this community in which you are invested. Bookmark this site. It will be our primary way of communicating with you. The congregation will receive stewardship packages in early November. In this package we will ask for your time, talent and monies to support the many programs of McClure United Church. There are year round opportunities to sign up for a variety of outreach in internal programs requiring your time and talents. With respect to funding, there are commitment cards available for you indicate your intended giving s to McClure. The card has three areas for your intended support: 1) Operating/programs (local); This includes church maintenance and outreach programs such as refugee fund, Egadz and Lighthouse support. 2) Mission and service fund of the National United Church 3) Capital reserve Fund; This fund is a reserve to fund building repairs and or renewal. This is a time of change for McClure. Together let us retain the good of the past and embrace the hope that the future brings. Please help us in this quest by participating in Stewardship of McClure United Church.
