1 An Open and Affirming Congregation of the United Church of Christ Our Mission Statement: EMPOWERED BY GOD S GRACE, WE WELCOME ALL, LOVE ALL, AND SEEK JUSTICE FOR ALL. UNITED IN SPIRIT, THE JOURNEY MAKES US ONE. 261 COLUMBIA STREET, PEACE DALE, RI PHONE WEB OFFICE@PEACEDALECHURCH.ORG E-Light Newsletter April 7, 2018 OUR PASTOR SEARCH Creation for Settled Pastor, Peace Dale Congregational Church Peace Dale Congregational Church now has a Designated Pastor, Rev. Gary Bagley. The next step in our process is to create a team of parishioners that will facilitate the comprehensive process required in the interim period. This team will be finished when there is a nomination of a settled pastor for PDCC. The congregation will vote on the nomination for our settled pastor. The following Charter lays out the purpose, goals, and team members characteristics needed to complete this work. As you will see this is a very significant and complex task that will require focus, discernment and a significant time commitment. As you read this charter and believe that you would like to be considered for this team, please contact either Carol Ann Hayes or Eve Keenan. We will be glad to talk with you about this important work. Once the Nominations for the team have been completed, the Congregation will approve their selection in a special congregational meeting. We hope to have our search team nominations by the end of April. Charter for Settled Pastor Search Task Force Peace Dale Congregational Church 3/21/2018 Purpose: To recommend to the congregation a settled pastor, using several tasks and mechanisms that will enable us to find the suitable candidate. This search will enable PDCC to define who we are, and what we want to become, and then apply our needs and goals as we evaluate those candidates most suitable for accomplishing our mission. Goals to be accomplished: 1. Completion of the church profile.
2 History of PDCC; Demographics of our market, demographics of our members, financial status of PDCC description of our ministries, description of our worship and faith formation, description of why we are searching 2. Create a process to consider PDCC s community s reflections on our current status and who we want to become and what does our local community need. 3. Identify Core Competencies needed to establish PDCC s future. 4. Submit work to RI UCC Conference 5. Establish method for evaluating the profiles from potential candidates 6. Receive profiles and then: Select possible candidates for more thorough evaluation Have focused interviews, Listen to their preaching through a video or by anonymous visit Check references Make a recommendation 7. Communicate with the congregation the general progress of the search on a regular basis 8. Creation of settled search task force: The church family will be notified of the Search Team creation including the mix of qualifications and, skills and representation from boards required. Church president will work with Nominating Committee Chair to screen and suggest possible nominations to the Executive Board a slate of Search Team Members. The Executive Board will approve the slate that will be submitted to the Congregation for approval at a special Congregational meeting. 9. Expectations of task force members: Be able to maintain strict confidentiality Be available for extensive committee work to complete the task, making this work a priority in their available time. Be able to make a commitment of months to complete the work Demonstrate a willingness to thoughtfully listen and participate in group s deliberations Be accountable for completing tasks Share their unique skills to accomplish a successful search Willingness to take time to discern what God is saying to us 10. Requisite skills needed for task force success: Leadership, financial, communication, writing, group dynamic skills, sufficient time, etc. 11. Task force member representation: Male and Female Younger/Older New /Long term member 1st/2nd service Demonstrated engagement with church mission Member of the Board of Deacons, Property Management, Christian Ed, and Missions (these members may also fill another role, i.e. male/female, etc.) We have three new members joining the church this Sunday! 3 DISCOVER PDCC Are you new to Peace Dale Church or are you interested in learning more about the church? JOIN US FOR OUR NEW MEMBER CLASS NEXT SATURDAY APRIL 14 AT 9 AM and find out more about the life and ministry of PDCC, our congregation, possibilities for community involvement, and potential membership at PDCC. We would like to thank all those who help bring everything together for our worship services (this Sunday s volunteers listed below). There are many others who do so much behind the scenes, and we thank them as well. 9 AM Volunteers: Deacon on Call Jim Blackerby; Ushers Tim & Linda Redmond, Galen McGovern, Roberta Norman; Communion Linda Redmond James McMonigle Jim Blackerby; Offering Harold & Rebecca Nonnenmacher; Property Management Harold Nonnenmacher (open), Ray Christian (close); Hospitality Shirley Anderson, Steve Stabile; AV Ray Dufault; Clock Lee Jeans 11 AM Volunteers: Deacon on Call Jim Blackerby; Ushers Bob Gamache Laura Benoit Peter & Claudia Swain; Reader Stephanie Healy; Offering Barry Keinard, Deb Waterman; Property Management Harold Nonnenmacher (open), Ray Christian (close); Hospitality Darlene Hermes, Tom McMillan and Roberta Norman; AV Ray Dufault; Clock Lee Jeans And a very special thanks to Ed Holt and Meg Kolodziej for printing our bulletins and newsletters each week (and all the other countless things they do to help our church!). Blessing of the Prayer Shawls This Sunday, April 8 During Both Worship Services We are excited to take the opportunity during each worship service this Sunday to bless the many shawls, blankets, scarves, and crafts made by generous and loving folks. We will recognize, thank, and commission individuals to continue the work of our Lord through the giving of their time, talents, and prayers. Over the centuries, prayer shawls, scarves, and blankets have come to symbolize peace, love, warmth and comfort for those who are ill or who have lost a loved one. They have also been given in times of joy and celebration, and here at Peace Dale Church we have made and distributed over one hundred items to many in need of love, reassurance, and spiritual sustenance. Each item is blessed and prayed over by the Prayer Circle, and we want to share this experience with the entire congregation this Sunday. The goal of the Prayer Shawl group, the Prayer Circle, and the Board of Deacons all working together with the entire Congregation, is to have enough crafters and handmade donations to continue to grow our mission here in our community. We have yarn, patterns, and folks willing to teach and coach those who want to help us fulfill our mission of love. What started out as a grass-roots mission countless years ago, has become an international cause where knitters, crocheters, and crafters of all faiths are demonstrating God s Love, Hope, and Peace. The Prayer Shawl Ministry is universal and enduring and like all acts of generosity and love, it enriches and blesses the giver as well as the receiver. So we hope you will join us Sunday. ~ Prayer Shawl Ministry, Prayer Circle, Board of Deacons This week s altar flowers are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Amy Therrien Borgus by her sister, Deirdre Therrien, brother-inlaw, James McMonigle, and their family. Altar flowers are a wonderful way to honor someone special, remember a departed loved one, or recognize a special occasion or event. If you are interested in providing altar flowers, please contact Betsy Cote at The Mission Offering for April is One Great Hour of Sharing. In Isaiah 58, God issues a call and a challenge - to love one another more deeply by sharing what we have with those in need. One Great Hour of Sharing provides relief from natural disasters, food for the hungry, and support for the poor and oppressed around the world. Please give generously.
4 Informational Meeting Sunday, April 15 10:15 in the Community Room Special thanks to Carol Edwards, Jackie Kanis, Phil Holley, Carol Anne Hayes, and the Flower Committee for decorating our worship space and church grounds to highlight our Lent, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter worship services. Because we have faith that spring weather is just around the corner, there will be a meeting to begin planning the 2018 Spring Fair in Hoxie Lounge this Sunday at 10:20. Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend. A Star is Coming! The Board of Church Family Life invites you to attend the 2018 PD CC Dinner Theater on Saturday, April 28, at 6:30 pm in Hall. Join us as a Wakefield family celebrates Mother's Day and welcomes home a special guest in the heartwarming original play, A Star is Coming!, written and directed by Bob Haynes. Talented members of our church family, including students and adults, will not only be acting in this year's production, but singing and dancing as well, creating some unforgettable moments. The talent will not be limited to the stage. One of our star chefs, Sylvia Blanda, will be preparing the dinner. Tickets are $20 each and will be available on Sunday in Hall following both services. Be sure to get your tickets early; last year's event sold out. May 6, 2 PM Crandall Organ Recital PDCC Sanctuary Calling all Gardening Stewards Our first gathering for the spring season cleanup of the church grounds is scheduled for Saturday, April 14 at 10 AM (rain date 4/21). All who would like to join are welcome. Bring rakes, saws, loppers, and hand pruners (sharp please!) if you have them. We also need to take away any yard debris that we remove so if any have vehicles and are willing, that would be most appreciated. Maybe some would like to do only that and that would be fine. Any questions? Call Jackie at ~ The Board of Property Management Each Friday morning, you are invited to gather around the coffee/tea pots and refreshments for beginning conversations around 9:30 and then join together in Hoxie Lounge at 10 to view a 20-minute lively video which leads us into dynamic discussions. Come to Coffee & Conversation each week or come whenever you can. White Elephants -- You are inspirational! Things have been arriving and filling up our sorting tables. This is just what we needed to hold a spring fair since white elephants are a big draw. Thank you! Fair date to be determined very soon. Please keep those hand me overs coming. Care to help in sorting, cleaning and pricing? See Jane Stabile for our work schedule. jane.stabile@outlook.com or
