2 Page 2 Dealing with Conflict James 1:19 Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. It was a Monday morning. I sat at my office desk at my former job, ready to start my work day. I had greeted my co-workers, we had chatted about our weekends, and we had discussed the work that needed be done that day. I was relaxed and happy. And then I heard a voice. A loud, angry voice. It was coming from a back office. The voice got louder and louder, and angrier and angrier. I got up from my desk to see what was wrong. Much to my dismay, I watched a co-worker yelling at a new employee because he had made a mistake. Another co-worker and I stopped the altercation, but the damage was already done. The new employee quit his job. Conflict. Whenever you gather two or more people together, you will experience conflict. At home, at work, or in your community. But what about when you gather two or more people together in Christ s name? As many of us have learned, you can experience conflict at church. Even in a sacred place where you expect people to be loving and accepting, you sometimes experience arguments, misunderstandings and hurt feelings. Conflict in the Christian church is not new. We can find an example of an explosive argument between church friends in the book of Acts. Paul and his friend, Barnabas, were busy planting new churches when they had a huge fight about which people to include in their work. The fight was so bad, that they couldn t stand to be around each other. Each man thought he was right. So they decided to separate and go their own way. Paul and Barnabas fight did have a happy ending, however. Although we don t know the details, they ended up reconciling. Isn t this a great example of how a friendship can be restored, even after a big fight? So if we are all going to experience conflict in our relationships, how should we deal with it? Jesus' brother, James, gave us very wise advice. He said that everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry. What a great reminder to listen more, talk less, and not be so quick to be offended. Some of you have been badly hurt and disappointed by a church friend. My hope is that, over time, you will be reconciled with each other. Consider reaching out to that person in love. And remember to be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to grow angry. God bless you! Pastor Michele Hopp For those unable to worship at a faith community on a regular basis there are times when folks are not able to worship as they would like. And this can happen for a variety of reasons. Yet, keeping connected to your faith family is also important! Both faith communities have opportunities for folks to keep connected. If you would like a visit and have not been visited, please contact the appropriate person. Arlington contact Pastor Michele Hopp at Poynette Inch has a group of volunteers who do home visits. Donna Luessman is the coordinator. Please contact her at

4 Page 4 GENERAL CONFERENCE 19 Listening Sessions Why is there a special General Conference coming February 23 26, 2019 in St. Louis, only a year before the regularly scheduled 2020 session in Minneapolis? How might my church be affected by this talk about choosing among a One Church, Connectional Conference and Traditionalist plan? Will other possibilities emerge? Change is coming for The United Methodist Church and there will be meetings this fall to help Wisconsin UMs understand what is being proposed. Formed following authorization by General Conference 2016, the Commission on a Way Forward identified three possible options, or plans, for our denomination as we move into the future.the Council of Bishops has recommended adoption of the One Church plan. The Wisconsin Delegation to GC 2019 is hosting nine educational and listening sessions around the state to allow feedback about the proposals. These sessions for interested clergy and laity will each last between minutes. The dates and locations are: Monday, October 1, 7 pm, Eau Claire Lake Street UMC, 337 Lake Street. Saturday, October 6, 10:00 am, Wausau Wesley UMC, 1101 Elm Street. Tuesday, October 9, 7:00 pm, Onalaska UMC, th Avenue North. Saturday, October 20, 10:00 am, Kaukauna Peace UMC, 2300 E. Wisconsin Avenue. Tuesday, October 23, 7:00 pm, Waukesha First UMC, 121 Wisconsin Avenue. Thursday, October 25, 7:00 pm, Sun Prairie UMC, 702 North Street. Saturday, October 27, 10:00 am, Janesville Cargill UMC, 2000 Wesley Avenue. Saturday, November 3, 10:00 am, Dodgeville UMC, 327 N. Iowa Street. In addition, invitations have been extended to Conference boards, agencies and other groups to provide their feedback to Delegation members. The purpose of all this information gathering is for the Delegation to hear from the diversity of membership which makes up Wisconsin United Methodism. The desire is to better understand thinking and feeling within our annual conference about our denomination s future. The Wisconsin Conference Delegation to the 2019 General Conference consists of six voting delegates, along with reserves. Clergy are Dan Dick, Sam Royappa, Steve Zekoff and first reserve Amanda Stein. Lay delegates are Lisa King, Barbara Dick, Gail Burgess and first reserve Katie Crise. There are additional reserves who would serve should any of these eight be unable to attend. In order elected, they are clergy Jorge Mayorga, Dan Schwerin, Jeremy Deaner, George Kafer and Jenny Arneson; laity Tom Popp, Judy Vasby, John Lawson and Julie Schubring. All remain engaged in the Delegation s preparations for the upcoming General Conference.

5 Page 5 WNCS/FUEL Youth Program Mission Focus! When Wisconsin was receiving all that rain back in August the Lavalle Public Library flooded they lost their complete children s library. So our WNCS/FUEL program is going to give our offering for the next couple months to help get some new books for the library. Also Simple Gifts on Sundays in the offering plate from September and October will go to this Mission Focus too! NEWS FLASH! Arlington & Poynette Inch Joint Choirs! 6 Page 6 A Chapter in the Life of Heather. On April 16 th, 2004 the diagnosis of my mom having pancreatic cancer was announced. As I sat next to mom in the hospital bed I saw her mustering all her strength to reassure me everything was going to be fine. I put all my faith in she was going to be okay, like my dad and my sister, she was going to beat cancer regardless of how bad everyone said pancreatic cancer was. My mom was Wonder woman, she survived my teen years. She can survive anything. Pancreatic cancer didn t stand a chance! June 17th, 2004 is a day I will never forget. Wonder woman was defeated. I remember that dreaded day like it was yesterday. Afterwards I didn't understand how everything around me operated as though nothing happened. My world came crumbing down and the world was unaffected by my mom's passing. People still went to work, people still laughed, people went to Target with their moms. How could they do this? I wanted to go to Target with my mom. Why could they, but I couldn t? A person once full of happiness, I found little to be happy about. Anger consumed me. I was mad at the people who still had their moms, I was mad at God for taking my mom and I was even mad at my mom for telling me everything was going to okay. I was mad at myself for not doing more for her. I was mad for not telling her I loved her more and for those times I was not kind to her. Over time my anger grew to gratitude. I am eternally grateful for the memories. I am so thankful for the 28 years we did end up having each other. These memories have her living with me every day. Four years before her passing she strongly encouraged me to drive down to Ohio with her so she could see her mom and go to her class reunion. I was completely opposed. I had things to do. A trip to Ohio was not part of my plan. I did it anyway. Now, I am so thankful I did. The songs we heard on the radio, our getting lost in Illinois and Indiana and our long talks on the road trip are memories I now treasure. I have learned to look to nature for comfort. When I see a butterfly or hear that annoying penny clinking around in the dryer, that is her saying "I love you". When a gentle breeze comes by that is her giving me a hug. These simple gestures have brought a smile to my face knowing she is still here. Whether it is foolish theory, who knows... it brings a smile to my face, so I will go with it. As I reflect on the 14 years since my mom gained her wings I have come to 3 realizations. Death still sucks, I still want my mom and always choose kind. Every day is a gift. We don t know what tomorrow will hold for any of us. Don t let yourself live with the regret of not saying something or saying the wrong thing to someone and if a road trip to Ohio is ever on the table make sure you take it. I still have a head full of dreams and goals, however these dreams and goals have just changed. Now instead of climbing the corporate ladder and traveling the world, my goal is to be the best and kindest ME I can be. ~ Heather Snyder

Welcome to the Waugh s ============================================== Special thank you to Ruth Ann and Mel Waugh for hosting the 2018 Mystery Night on the farm. They were wonderful hosts by providing us with a hayride, walking tacos, a bonfire and then of course smores to go with! Thank again! Here are a bunch of photos from Wednesday Night. The FUEL kids did skits for some of Jesus s miracles. Going fishing, helping the blind to see, and water into wine. Our very own Blake Nachreiner was Jesus in all three skits. Blessings on our great youth!
