3 FROM MRS JEAN HUBY - CHURCH WARDEN An extract from Archbishops Justin Welby and John Sentimu s statement on the Referendum outcome, 24 June The vote to withdraw from the European Union means that now we must all reimagine both what it means to be the United Kingdom in an independent world and what values and virtues should shape and guide our relationships with others. As citizens of the United Kingdom, whatever our views during the referendum campaign, we must now unite in a common task to build a generous and forward -looking country, contributing to human flourishing around the world. We must remain hospitable and compassionate, builders of bridges and not barriers. Many of those living among us and alongside us as neighbours, friends and work colleagues come from overseas and some will feel a deep sense of insecurity. We must respond by offering reassurance, by cherishing our wonderfully diverse society, and by affirming the unique contribution of each and every one. The referendum campaign has been vigorous and at times has caused hurt to those on one side or the other. We must therefore act with humility and courage being true to the principles that make the very best of our Nation. Unity, hope and generosity will enable us to overcome the period of transition that will now happen, and to emerge confident and successful. The opportunities and challenges that face us as a nation and as global citizens are too significant for us to settle for less... Let us pray for all our leaders, especially for Prime Minister David Cameron in his remaining months in office. Let us pray especially that we may go forward to build a good United Kingdom that through relating to the rest of Europe in a new way will play its part amongst the nations in the pursuit of the common good throughout the world.

Cawood allotment society annual bar b que is to be held on Sunday July 10th on plot 4. See the web site for further info. CHURCH TAPESTRY I'm thinking of making a display panel to go next to the tapestry at the back of the church to explain what each panel represents - and show how the village has changed since the tapestry was created in I thought this might be of interest to visitors - and also to those who have arrived in Cawood since I'm an incomer myself, of course, having only been here since I've blutaked onto the tapestry frame what I think I know about each of the panels - but I'm sure there must be more to be said about each one - and for a few of the panels, I've no idea! If people wanted to contact me to complete the info, that would be great...and perhaps those who read the church magazine might well be those with that info. Thanks David Lewis Welcome to Ethan Joshua Birkinshawm baptised on 1 st May 2016
7 Was it a dream? Oh no, it's true, The fields ARE green, the sky IS blue, No sound of gunfire fills the air, Peace everywhere. We stroll in woods where comrades fell, What a sad tale those woods could tell, Tales of brave men about to die, Please tell me why. "Return to the Somme" 1 July 1986 I had a dream the other day, I thought that I was far away, Walking on roads I knew so well, That led to Hell. I walked in fields of verdant green, Fields that were once a nightmare scene, Scenes that I now remember well, Ramparts of Hell. Places remembered, long ago With weary limbs and feet so slow, Plodding along down muddy roads, With heavy loads. Scenes that we knew in days gone by, When "Stretcher Bearer" was the cry, Have ceased to be, now all is well, Goodbye to Hell. But crosses here remind us still Of brave young lads who had the will To face the foe, too young to die, But here they lie. And now at last we close the book, Once more we take a last long look At fields and woods where comrades fell, Goodbye, farewell. Walter Hare (from Church End, Cawood) Walter Hare served as a private in the 16th West Yorkshire Regiment (the "Bradford Pals"), and fought on the Somme during 1916.
8 Garden Party Thank you! This year s Garden Party took place on Sunday 26 June and was a very successful event, with a total of raised for church funds. (Even the weather was kind to us!) A very big THANK YOU to everyone who gave so generously of their time to man the stalls, serve refreshments, and set up /clear away, or who helped in any other way. Special thanks go to Jo and Mike Welbourn for organising the event, and for allowing us to use their beautiful garden for the afternoon A Big Thank You and very best wishes To Rev Ian Ellery on his retirement On Saturday 11th June the Benefice, and members from Howden and other parishes, came together at Wistow church. The service was a happy thank you, including a serenade to Ian by the Wistow choir, to Father Ian for all that he has done during his ministry, both here in Cawood, Wistow and Rather, and indeed thought his 34 years, his inspiration and dedication has encouraged and supported many people and even stretches as far as Sweden. It is with sadness, for us that we say goodbye to Father Ian as our vicar, but with happiness for him, and his family, that he goes into retirement and remains part of the village community, we wish Ian, Julie Kate and George all the very best and send our love for their future happiness in the years ahead.
