2 Page 2 May 4, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners, Usually Fr. John Costello writes a weekly article in the bulletin to keep parishioners informed of events in the Church and in our parish community. For the next few weeks I will write to you about our plans for the renovation of our sanctuary, which will likely take place this summer. I want to begin by expressing my thanks for the generous support of a number of parishioners who have made donations to the project. I am encouraged by your willingness to contribute to this effort, and I assure you that you will be pleased with the final results. I also want to acknowledge that there are parishioners who are not supportive of the plans to renovate the sanctuary. I hope that this series of articles will help you to understand the rationale for the project and earn your trust and acceptance. When I was pastor of Our Lady of the Snows Parish in Floral Park I experienced similar reactions to the project to build a new church; after the work was complete, all of those who initially did not support the project were proud and pleased with the final results. I am confident that we will have a similar experience here at St. Kevin Parish in Flushing. Many of you are homeowners. You know what it is like to make necessary improvements to your home, and you also make decisions about décor to suit your personal taste. Also, you know there can be a domino effect to your decisions: when you buy new furniture you sometimes replace the carpet and paint the walls so that the whole room comes together with a new look. Sometimes you make changes because you have no choice: when there is faulty wiring, the electrician needs to be called in to replace it. Other times you may simply grow tired of the old couch and decide to go with a new style of furniture to update your home. Our church was built in 1956, so it is almost 60 years old. In recent years, due to the vision and leadership of Msgr. Finnerty and the generosity of parishioners, our building was improved with the addition of air conditioning and an elevator. The lower church became obsolete and so that space was renovated to become a Parish Center that is regularly used by many different groups in our community. However, the most important space in our church, the sanctuary, has virtually been left unchanged. The altar was moved forward a few feet and the tabernacle was moved to a side altar. A new chair was brought into the sanctuary. Although the Sacred Liturgy went through a major revision in the 1960s, very little was done to our sanctuary to fully comply with the new directives for the celebration of Mass. Next week I will begin to outline the reasons for the revisions that are planned for our sanctuary. In Christ, Bishop Raymond Chappetto To Be Continued Second Collection - This weekend the annual Catholic Relief Services collection will take place. In addition to assisting CRS, the USCCB Offices of International Justice and Peace, Migration and Refugee Services and Pastoral Care for Migrants and Refuges this collection will also assist the relief work of the Holy Father. We thank you for your support. The Girl Scouts will sponsor a Defensive Driving course that will be held on two Tuesdays; May 13th & 27th, in the Parish Center from 7 to 10 P.M. Upon completion of both nights, you will receive A Green Cross Certificate, good for a 10% discount off your insurance for 3 years and point reductions. The cost is $45. Please call Rosanne at to register for the course. Welcome to our new Seminarian We are happy to announce that a seminarian has been assigned to St. Kevin again this year. Robert Mema, who is completing his first year of theology at St. Joseph Seminary, Dunwoodie, will be serving here at St. Kevin beginning Monday, May 12th. We know that you will welcome and encourage him during his time in our parish. For your information, Chris Bethge, who was with us last year, will be assigned to St. Sebastian Parish in Woodside so he can make use of his Spanish before ordination next year. 3 Page 3 Third Sunday of Easter Confirmation On Saturday, May 3rd, at the 5:00 P.M. Mass, Bishop Raymond F. Chappetto celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation for 17 parishioners from St. John Vianney Church and 43 students from St. Kevin Catholic Academy and St. Kevin Religious Education Program. We congratulate the newly confirmed and assure them of our continued prayers and support! We also congratulate their parents and sponsors on their faithfulness to our Catholic faith and assure them of our prayers and support as they continue to guide their children on their faith journey! Church First Holy Communion On Sunday, May 4th, 43 students from St. Kevin Catholic Academy and St. Kevin Religious Education Program will receive their Sacrament of First Holy Communion. St. Kevin s 8th Grade Girl Scout, Kaitlyn Larrea, from troop #4476 is working on earning her Silver Award by collecting school supplies for children who attend the after-school and summer program for students in grades Pre-K-5 run by CPC (the Chinese- American Planning Council), where she volunteers her free time. The children are in need of school supplies such as notebooks, folders, crayons, pencils, pens, rulers, etc. to do their homework and school projects as well as old reading books you may not want any more. There will be boxes around the church from May 3rd to June 1st so you may donate any school materials or reading books. Kaitlyn thanks you and appreciates all your support! St. Kevin Senior Club will meet on Tuesday, May 6th, in the Parish Center from 1:30P.M. to 4:30 P.M. 6 Page 6 Third Sunday of Easter Stewardship Thought As today s gospel reveals, the first meal shared with the risen Lord happened in a place called Emmaus. Perhaps there is no better time to reflect on this story than in those prayerful moments at Mass when we return to our place after receiving Holy Communion. Those few moments give us an opportunity to reflect on our stewardship of Christ s presence within us. We have a chance to practice hospitality by inviting Jesus into our hearts to walk and talk with us about our own Emmaus journey. We can relive once again the time when He broke bread for the disciples. And just as they did, we too can recognize Christ in this meal we have just shared with others. Stay With Us Lord Walk with us, Lord, along the road of resurrection! Explain for us, so slow to believe, the things that Scripture says of you. Break the bread of the Eucharist with us whenever we share our lives with our brother and sisters. Stay with us each time night approaches and the daylight fades in our hearts. House Blessings during Easter Pope Francis is asking priests to go out into their parish communities to encounter people where they live. There is a tradition of blessing individuals and families in their homes during the seasons of Lent and Easter, and the clergy of St. Kevin would like to offer that opportunity here this year.
