We hope you enjoy your visit and invite you to come back soon! What Is the Day of Pentecost? According to Marcia McFee, director of worship for the 2012 General Conference of The United Methodist Church, Pentecost was the second most important part of the Christian year, after Pascha or Easter, for the early church. It commemorated both the Ascension of Jesus and the descending of the Holy Spirit, but later became two distinct celebrations by the end of the 4 th century. (As Christianity became legal, there was no reason not to have as many celebrations as possible.) Pentecost also became a favorite time for baptisms with its focus on the work of the Holy Spirit within the church and within our lives. The holy day continues to be a wonderful celebrative time for rites of passage including baptism, confirmation and the reception of new members. Connexions Concert to Benefit Salkehatchie Mission Trip Today at 3:00 p.m., musicians who share a connexion with Sudbury UMC will present this year s fourth and final Connexions Concert to benefit our youth ministry s summer mission trip to Salkehatchie, South Carolina. Leslie Bell, vocals; Rachel Freedman, bass trombone; Jill Gaudet, flute; Rob Hammerton, electric bass, vocals; Bill Hoke, clarinet; Heather Josselyn- Cranson, piano; Ciaran Murphy, drums; Kevin Murphy, piano, organ, vocals; Kristin Murphy, vocals; Cynthia Schwann, piano; Sherry Stonebraker, organ; and the Wesley Winds, Sudbury United Methodist's concert band will feature works by the Pentatonix, a South African traditional hymn, J. S. Bach, Beethoven, James Scott, Joseph Lamb, Kevin Francis Murphy, arrangements by Rob Hammerton and Kevin Francis Murphy and others. The concert will take place in the sanctuary. Admission is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be received to support youth service in Salkehatchie, South Carolina. Refreshments will follow the concert.

6 Where Is the Rest Room? A unisex rest room is located in the southeast corner of the narthex, behind the back row of pews on the pulpit side of the sanctuary. The next closest rest room is located just past the side door of the sanctuary near the pulpit and three steps up. Quiet Time for Spiritual Growth Quiet time with The Upper Room can lead to a spiritual growth spurt! Booklets are available in the narthex. Or visit The Upper Room online at Is There Child Care during Sunday Morning Worship Services? Infants and toddlers are welcome in worship. Parents with young children may also visit our Family Room with visual and aural access to the sanctuary. Stairs in the northwest corner of the narthex lead up to a cozy room furnished with sofas, toys, and children s books. If Our Shopping Cart Could Talk Food donations made to the shopping cart in the narthex are delivered to Open Table, our partner in Maynard. If our shopping cart could talk, it would politely say, Thank You! to all who visit. Or, it might drop hints like, Don t be a stranger! and I always need solid white tuna in cans, spaghetti sauce in jars, mixed vegetables in cans, pineapple in cans, raisins, dried beans in bags, bread crumbs, condensed milk, rice pilaf, and instant coffee. Sudbury UMC Is a Nut Free Zone! Several Sunny Hill preschoolers and staff members have dangerous allergies to nut products and coconut oil. Do not bring food products or soaps containing tree nuts into the church and remember that coconut oil in kitchen cleaners and lotions can be lethal. Thank you! Tis the Season when Friends and Neighbors May Need Care Seasonal changes can trigger loneliness, sadness, or anxiety. Do you know someone who could benefit from a caring relationship? Habitat for Humanity is working on two projects in Metrowest communities a new build in Stow and a renovation project in Acton. The Outreach Commission plans to send work teams to Acton on June 9, June 30, and July 14. If you have a Saturday to spare, and are available to help, please send your contact information to Chris Straub at christopher.straub@novartis.com. Please note: you must be 16 years or older to work on a construction site.

7 Church School Theme in May: The Bible The Key Word for Prayer Pals in Week 37 Is Trust During the month of May, the theme for Sunday School students, preschool through Grade 5, is The Bible with the focus memory verse: Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105) Today s teachers are Cindy Simon, Doug and Laurie Eliason, and Eric Magnuson. The key verse for May is Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 Prayer Group Meets on Friday Mornings During Lent, a small group of men met on Friday mornings to view and discuss Max Lucado s video series, He Chose the Nails. These men have decided to continue meeting weekly. If you are an early riser, you are invited to join them from 6:30 till 7:10 on Friday mornings in the O Reilly Room as they view and discuss a video series on prayer. One of the greatest desires of Jesus disciples from their Rabbi was, Lord, teach us to pray. Do You Like to Sing? Would you like to know more about the techniques singers use to learn music and perform? Join our music directors, Rob Hammerton and Kevin Murphy on Sunday, May 27 and June 3, for Singing School. [This line two times] Youth Choir to Lead Worship on June 17 The Crossflame youth choir and orchestra will lead Sudbury UMC s 9:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, June 17. This award-winning ensemble will present worship selections based on the theme Living in the Sacred Center with works by Mark Miller, John Rutter, Jim Papoulis, Craig Courtney, Dan Goeller, Robert Ray and Keith Hampton. Crossflame, from Hickory, NC, is making its 23 rd consecutive summer concert tour under the direction of Ron Sinclair. The ensemble has also appeared twice as part of a Sunday afternoon concert with an all-star cast at the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville. A fellowship meal with our guests will follow worship. Please Recycle This Bulletin The Worship and Music Commission has placed blue recycle bins near the church s three entrances. Materials not needed at home, along with other clean papers, may be recycled in these bins. Please dispose of paper soiled by food or anything else in wastebaskets.
