2 Minister s Letter My dear brothers and sisters, May God s peace and joy be with you! At our fraternity gathering on August 19, Jackie Martin, Mary Myler, Dan Gilbert, Ron Kessler and Elizabeth Kessler formally entered the Inquiry Phase of our initial formation program. Welcome Jackie, Mary, Dan, Ron and Elizabeth! At the same gathering, Joe Gentile was admitted to the Candidacy Phase. Please pray for them as they discern their vocation to the Secular Franciscan Order. On Sunday, September 16, our fraternity Day of Reflection will begin at 11:00 a.m. Our topic will be Fraternity and the responsibilities of professed members. Please remember to bring a brown bag lunch and, if you are able, a dish to share. There is no Mass. As they have for hundreds of years, Franciscans throughout the world will gather together on October 3 to recall the Transitus of St. Francis, his passage from earthly life to eternal life. Yet this service is more than a remembrance of the death of the poor man from Assisi, it is also a celebration of the Franciscan spirit that is alive today within each of us. I hope that you, your family and friends will attend the Transitus service at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3 and the Mass in honor of St. Francis on Thursday, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. Feel free to invite them and other Secular Franciscans and First and Third Order religious to join us. Please plan to attend our Chapter of Elections on Sunday, October 21 at 1:30 p.m. I announced at the August fraternity gathering that Nona Mary Hebert had hernia surgery on August 13. Mary is now recuperating at home. Patricia Long is on the waiting list for a liver transplant. George Pelyak is at Heartland Nursing Home and will be moving soon to American House. We also recognized Bridget and Michael Schultz who celebrated their 50 th wedding anniversary on August 11 and Loretta and Norb Chmielarczyk who celebrated their 56 th wedding anniversary on August 25. REFLECTION The deepest identity of a Secular Franciscan is based on their relationship with Jesus Christ, God s gift to the People of God. We believe that the Church has the mission to bring the spirit of generosity, forgiveness, reconciliation and celebration to all people. Franciscans are dedicated to do whatever is needed not only to proclaim the gospel message by words, but also to make it evident in their lives. Whether they speak the word or live the word, they bring the message to the Church and the world. They go from the Gospel to life and life to the Gospel. It is never just talk. It becomes a life of love as Jesus life was one of love, even to death on the cross. Secular Franciscans, through life itself, share love with all people and all of creation. They gently call people to love through the example of their personal lives as well as their community life in fraternity. from Franciscan Journey by Lester Bach, OFM Cap, page 7. Please pray daily for our fraternity elections and for vocations to our Secular Franciscan way of life. Your sister in Ss Francis and Clare, maryann 2 The Poverello, September 2012

When Alexis first arrived at St. Jude, her family didn t know that St. Jude would not only cover the costs of Alexis treatment, but also housing, food and travel. St. Jude took our worry away, said her mom. Then, we were able to focus on the most important thing her treatment. Alexis family is grateful for St. Jude donors. She loves board games, drawing and playing with her little sister. Alexis returns to St. Jude for regular checkups. 4 The Poverello, September 2012

5 Celebrating Javier Aguilar,, OFS Javier Aguilar was born to María Luisa and Benedict Joseph Aguilar on May 2, 1961 at North Detroit General Hospital. Javier is the brother of Leticia and the late Benedict, Jr. Javier attended Holy Redeemer Grade School and graduated from Holy Redeemer High School in He graduated from Wayne State with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in Following graduation Javier began working at Arbor Drugs, then Perry Drugs, and Rite Aid. Javier is currently employed as the pharmacy manager at Kroger in Roseville. He is a parishioner at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Detroit. As a Secular Franciscan, Javier considers our way of life as a spiritual journey that he is on. In high school, his Mom and Dad wanted him to be a priest. In the twelfth grade, he decided not to become a priest. Fr. Tim, pastor of St. Michael s Parish in Sterling Heights, invited Javier to go on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. After returning from that pilgrimage, Javier had an urge to visit other Marian shrines. In 2006, he and his brother made pilgrimages to Lourdes and Fatima. Fr. Tim then shared with Javier the story of Medjugorje and Javier made a pilgrimage to that shrine. In 2008, he went to the Holy Land with Fr. Kratz. While on pilgrimage to Italy in 2009, Javier met a Franciscan priest from Denver who encouraged him to find a Third Order Franciscan fraternity. Javier remembered that when he was youngster, he went with his mother to the healing services at St. Bonaventure. He learned there was a Secular Franciscan fraternity at the Solanus Casey Center and decided to investigate joining our fraternity. In his free time, Javier enjoys all kinds of dancing (contra dancing, swing, salsa, ballroom), photography, growing roses, going on pilgrimages, walking his dog, Zeus, cross country and down hill skiing in winter, and golf in summer. We love you, Javier! Come and See On Sunday, September 16, St. Bonaventure Secular Franciscan Fraternity is hosting a new class of orientees. The gathering begins at 12 Noon in the second floor conference room of the Solanus Casey Center. Orientees are invited to remain for the fraternity gathering and social, if they wish. We are looking for practicing, dedicated Catholics. Invite them, and let them decide if they want to pursue the Franciscan Gospel way of life for themselves. Please consider inviting even just one person to come and see what we are about. The Poverello, September
