1 Welcome To the First Presbyterian Church of Rogers, Arkansas January 6, 2019 Epiphany of the Lord PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Text in Bold is to be read in unison ANNOUNCEMENTS & WELCOME Rev. Dr. Val Bell PSALM 72:1-7,10-14 and PRAYER OF THE DAY PRELUDE *CALL TO WORSHIP Linda Yount Leader: We have seen a star in the East! People: God is with us. Light has come! Leader: We have heard the songs of the angels. People: God is with us. Love has come! Leader: Now we follow the light into the world. People: God is with us. Christ has come! *OPENING SONG OF PRAISE #147 The First Nowell *CALL TO CONFESSION Rev. Dr. Val Bell Leader: The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. In faith, let us make our confession to God, first together then individually and silently. *PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of light, shine upon us. Move us to see the glow of your presence in the darkest places: The places where it seems impossible for a candle to hold its flame. Move us to know the light of your Spirit in the brightest places: The places where neon signs, LED headlights, and fluorescent bulbs are nearly blinding. Move us to notice the light of your love in the loudest places: The places where the chaos and cacophony demand all of our attention. Forgive us, Lord, of the ways we fail to notice and live in your good news. Move us to see you, to hear you, to feel your warmth. May we know the light, and may we never fear the darkness. For it was in the void of darkness that you formed the world, And it was in the dark of night that you came as a child. *ASSURANCE OF PARDON Leader: May the God of mercy, who forgives you all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. All: Thanks be to God! *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Ruth 1: 16 O Waly Waly is a traditional English melody dating back to the early 18 th century. It was also a popular folk song in the southern Appalachian Mountains. In 1971, Hal Hopson used this melody as a hymn setting of the text from I Corinthians, 13, The Gift of Love. It is currently published in 61 hymnals. Although the text is from I Corinthians, it applies perfectly to Ruth s declaration to Naomi and reminds us that our best gifts are the ones motivated by love. 7 Heaven and earth are full of your glory. You are holy, O God of majesty, and blessed is Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord. In Jesus, born of Mary your Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth. He lived as one of us, knowing joy and sorrow. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, opened blind eyes, broke bread with outcasts and sinners, and proclaimed the good news of your kingdom to the poor and needy. Dying on the cross, he gave himself for the life of the world. Rising from the grave, he won for us victory over death. Seated at your right hand, he leads us to eternal live. We prai SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER It is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, O Lord our God, creator and ruler of the universe. In your wisdom, you made all things and sustain them by your power. You formed us in your image, setting us in this world to love and to serve you, and to live in peace with your whole creation. When we rebelled against you refusing to trust and obey you, you did not reject us, but still claimed us as your own. You sent prophets to call us back to your way. Then in the fullness of time, out of your great love for the world, you sent your only Son to be one of us, to redeem us and heal our brokenness. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with choirs of angels and with all the faithful of every time and place, God our hope, we give you thanks that you have given us this foretaste of the justice, righteousness, and peace of your promised new creation. Strengthen us with this heavenly food as we seek to serve your holy realm. Lead us to live in joyful expectation of the coming again in glory of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
