*FROM OUR LEADERSHIP* From the Pastor On October 29, the day before we celebrate Reformation Sunday in church, there will be a very special retreat. Your congregation council, the pastoral call committee, and the visioning team will be spending the day in prayerful discernment about the future. These leaders will be considering both their own insights, and the opinions and affirmations which arose during the World Café conversations (Sept 27 and Oct 1), when all members of Christ the Lord were invited to gather and focus on the future. Please keep your church in prayer throughout this month. Your financial commitments are a vital part of what will be possible in mission and ministry as we move forward. Of equal importance, however, is your willingness to participate, to give of your time and ability, and to be open to the leading of the triune God. Michael R. Rothaar Interim Pastor Lutheran-Catholic Commemoration On Oct. 31, 2016, we will make history. Lutherans and Catholics from around the world will come together for the anniversary of the Reformation. The Lutheran-Catholic commemoration will take place in Lund, Sweden, with a Common Prayer service led by Pope Francis, The Lutheran World Federation President Bishop Dr. Munib A. Younan, and its general secretary, the Rev. Dr. Martin Junge. Our ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has said, After 500 years, both Lutherans and Catholics share the joy for the positive elements of the Reformation, rejoicing together in the gospel and acknowledging that we are sent together as the body of Christ to serve the world. The joint commemoration witnesses to the reality that what unites us is more powerful than what divides us. This event is an opportunity to open doors to new possibilities, strengthen relationships, work together to promote peace, reconciliation and joint diaconal work around the world." The event will begin with a liturgy in Lund Cathedral and Page 11

continue with a public event in Malmö Arena that will be open to wider participation. If you might be in Sweden, you can register for updates and be notified if tickets become available at lund2016.net. The service should be available as a recording (if not live streaming) at elca.org. Shekinah Chapel, SIMBA and MYLA featured on ABC7 Watch Sanctuary, Sunday, October 2, 2016, 2 p.m., on ABC7 Chicago For more than 20 years, a Chicago-based group of African American men and women have run an Africentric outdoor ministry program for inner city youth known as SIMBA (Safe in My Brother's Arms). As a result, hundreds of at-risk children experience the beauty of the outdoors each summer, while also being immersed in a structured, loving community filled with positive role models and supportive affirmation. Originally targeting young African American males, SIMBA soon gave rise to SIMSA, (Safe in My Sister's Arms). Eventually, SIMBA and SIMSA gave rise to Rescue, Release, and Restore, an organization dedicated to transforming self worth and empowering youth through leadership training, artistic expression, and mentorship. In addition, a new worshiping community, Shekinah Chapel on Chicago's south side was born and continues today as a thriving congregation affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This summer, the organization branched out even further, launching a new initiative, MYLA, the Multicultural Youth Leadership Academy. MYLA offers young men and women a safe space where they are developed and refined as leaders for a multicultural world. Watch Sanctuary, Sunday, October 2, 2016, at 2 p.m., on ABC7 Chicago. Page 12

Vision Taskforce Members of the Task Force have worked diligently to provide opportunities for each member of the congregation to have a voice in the process of discernment. World Café conversations of Sept. 27 and Oct. 1 provided opportunities for CTL members to share and discuss the future of our church. The information gathered from those conversations will be reviewed and discussed at a retreat on Oct 29. Congregation council members, task force members and call committee members will participate in the retreat. Watch for a report which will summarize the results of the café conversations. Page 13

*GET INVOLVED* Hoagie Sandwich Fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity We will again be taking orders for Hoagie sandwiches on two Sundays, Oct. 9th & 16th; they can be picked up at church on Sun., Oct. 30. A hoagie sandwich is salami, ham, provolone cheese, tomato, onion, and a secret sauce on a 6" roll. Cost is $5.00 each. All proceeds will benefit our Habitat for Humanity New Hope Partnership. Contact Carol E at with questions. Travel with the Tolzmanns Once again the Tolzmanns will be leading a tour to Europe. Oct 9-19, 2017 we'll travel in Croatia and Slovenia. The itinerary looks fantastic! We really enjoy traveling with a group, renewing old and creating new friendships and seeing the sights. We'd be delighted to have you join us on our next travel adventure! Brochures are available. Making Soups and Dips for Craft Show Each year the soups and dips sold at the Craft Show are a best seller. We would like to invite you to help us assemble them. We will be putting together jars for Chicken Noodle Soup, Beef Barley Soup, and BBQ Beans and also making packages of 3 different kinds of dips. We will be meeting at church on Sat., Oct. 22, at 1:00 P.M. Bring measuring spoons and cups if you d like. Join us for fun and fellowship. Friends are always welcome. Questions? Call Carol E at Page 14

CROP The Elgin CROP Hunger Walk is scheduled for Sun., Oct. 16. The purpose of the walk is to raise funds for providing food and services to those in need, both locally and worldwide. In the past, CROP has helped victims of storms, flooding, drought, and more. On Sun., Oct. 9, Social Ministry will host a bake sale for CROP called Cookies by Choice. At this sale, buyers may select from a wide array of cookies, choosing the quantity and varieties that they like best. People wishing to help CROP can do so by being walkers, buying cookies, or donating at the bake sale. Thanksgiving Food Baskets For many years, our church provided baskets of food to needy families in the U46 school district in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Some of these baskets are for families with no cooking facilities. The baskets are large sturdy bags packed with enough nonperishable food supplies for several meals. To buy perishables, the families also receive a small amount of funds in the form of a grocery store certificate. The food basket ministry could not happen without donations of food from the congregation. Please sign-up to make a donation. Sign-ups will begin on Sun., Oct. 23 and all food will need to be brought to CTL on or before Sun., Nov. 13. Kids Hope USA School is in session and Kids Hope is there! The number of mentors has decreased but the enthusiasm for the program is stronger than ever. Each mentor agrees that he/she receives far more from the children than could be imagined. When we started at Hillcrest, the teachers and staff were pleasant but didn't bother to get to know us. Maybe they thought we were just temporary help. Surprise! We've gone back again and again. This is our fifth year at school. At a recent meeting with the principal, there were hugs of welcome and expressions of appreciation for the Kids Hope mentors. The down side of this venture is that there aren't enough of us for all the children who need that extra adult attention that mentors can provide. One hour. One day a week. One child. One mentor. Huge impact! Contact Jeanne T for more information or to volunteer for this amazing opportunity to make a difference. Page 15

Habitat for Humanity News House project There is a family of 5 waiting to move into their new house to start making memories. Are you ready to work? Sign-up to volunteer to help with rehab by registering at the Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley website Sign-up for as many workdays as you like or get a group together! Contact Carol E at with questions. August Financial Report Gifts Given Gifts Expected August $14,963 $14,553 +$510 Year-to-Date $123,555 $130,094 -$6,539 Expenses to date $111,241 giving us +$12,314 Obviously there is good news (expenses less than gifts given) and not so good news (a deficit in where we thought we would be). The great news is: those who make an Estimate of Giving (pledge) are at 99% of their commitment and this amounts to 85% of all gifts given to date. Celebration Sunday October 16th Celebration Sunday is when we assemble to return our Estimate of Giving (pledge) cards for our mission in Each Page 16

fall comes a time for our spiritual check-up. Giving of ourselves and generously parting with our tithes or other proportionate financial giving are spiritual acts. They are joyous responses to God s giving first to us. Fourteen months ago our pastor took another call, some months after that our Office Manager retired, on September 4th, our Music Director/organist/pianist was seriously injured in a car accident, and then, very recently, our deaconess left. Healthy congregations respond by seeing new possibilities, while the anxious are convinced the sky is falling and all is lost. How can all be lost if we believe Christ is with us? Remember, we are centered in Christ. I trust the Spirit will move us to respond faithfully as we make our Estimates of Giving and move forward in the days ahead. If you cannot be present on the 16th, please mail these cards to the office, in care of the Financial Secretary. Arlyn T, Stewardship Chair Vineyard Breakfast CTL is providing breakfast for the needy at the Vineyard Church in downtown Elgin on the third Thursday of each month. Breakfasts start at 7:00 a.m. We are providing a hot meal during these colder months. Anyone who would like to help by donating food, preparing, or serving, please contact Barb B. Scrip Fundraising Simply return an order form with your check to the church on Sunday. You will receive a new order form each week. You may pick up your order the following Sunday at the church. We encourage you to take advantage of the wonderful benefits offered by this on-going fundraiser. If you have questions, please talk to Mary N or Dorothy G Page 17

Celebrate 150 Years of LSSI! On October 31, 2016, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) turns 150! The organization is planning celebrations and commemorations to honor a century and a half of bringing healing, justice, and wholeness to people and communities. LSSI would like to hear from people who have been affected by its services over the years and who want to share their stories. Please contact Barb Hailey, Director of Communications and Advancement, at Barb.Hailey@LSSI.org or (847) Page 18

*LEARNING* Adult Study Groups You re welcome to participate this Fall in our adult learning opportunities: Sunday Forum Come to the library every Sunday at 11:00. Pastor Rothaar will lead the discussion of Natasha Crain s book Keeping Your Kids on God s Side, which is available here at church for $9.50, or by order from Amazon.com. The title is misleading it s good for parents and grandparents, but also for anyone who wants to think about the question of whether Christianity is really true. Bible & Brew is a lay-led spontaneous discussion group that meets each Tuesday at 7:00 at Village Squire in Dundee. Wednesday Morning Bible Study is taught by Pastor Rothaar every week at 10:00 in the library. This study is a careful look at the lectionary -- the three Scripture readings and psalm that will be used in church the following Sunday. A study guide is distributed each week. You can either bring your own Bible (any translation) or use one of the NRSV Bibles we have on hand. Page 19
