3 SACRED LITURGY Welcome to the Cathedral Basilica If you are a visitor to the Cathedral Basilica, we want you to know how welcome you are; whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. Thanks, in part, to the generosity of visitors like you, we are able to celebrate the church s liturgy here in a fitting and beautiful way. From Pope Francis Little Book of Compassion If God limited Himself to only justice, He would cease to be God, and would instead be like human beings who ask merely that the law be respected. But mere justice is not enough. Experience shows that an appeal to justice alone will result in its destruction. That is why God goes beyond justice with His mercy and forgiveness. From the Pastor Is your God too small? The God of Heaven and Earth; the God of Creation and Eternity; the God who was, is, and will be...is a God without limits spiritually, temporally, or intellectually. He is a God of Infinite Love...for you and for me. From the beginning of time, the human mind has imposed a finiteness on God...the Punitive God of the Ancient Isrealites...the Accessible God only to the Pharisees in the Jewish Temple...the Irrelevant God of our Popular Culture. If that is our panorama of faith, then this Tiny God becomes only what we want or imagine him to be...and we do not see him as he really is. His Law is not a law of compliance and judgment...that is a definition of the human mind. His Law is an Eternal Law of Salvation that is defined by mercy and forgiveness...to be given to us and be given by us...a definition found in the depths of the human heart...where faith and hope live. That is not a God who is too small...but a God beyond all comprehension...the God of your life and of my life... +May God Bless You and Keep You+ -Very Reverend Ronald W. 4 SACRED MUSIC Cathedral Choir Happenings The Cathedral Choir, sings weekly at the Sunday, 10:30 Masses, as well as the primary choral ensemble for major events in the cathedral. The choir rehearses Wednesday evenings in the choir room. The musicians of this ensemble work hard, and bring a great level of commitment and artistry to the ensemble, under the direction of Phil Bordeleau. Seen in this picture is a recent photo snapped during a rehearsal. Also included this week is a picture of Brandon Clark, one of our parishioners, helping with audio mixdowns in a recording session. Bosetti Sunday Afternoon Concert Sunday October 28th is our next Sunday afternoon concert. The concert features Karen Beaumont, pipe organist, performing on the magnificent Kimball/Morell pipe organ. Her program, is drawn entirely from the vast repertoire of the Baroque-era composer, Johann Pachelbel. Ms. Beaumont is a Milwaukee-based concert organist who performs regularly in the USA and UK; she has six major recordings to her credit: two volumes of French Organ Noels, Early Spanish Organ Music, Austrian Organ Music and selections from the Well-Tempered Clavier, and a recording of Jean-Francois Dandrieu. In addition to the organ, she is an instructor of piano and plays the French Horn. Bosetti Concerts are free and open to the public. A reception follows the concerts. Contemporary Choir at 6:30 Mass The 6:30 PM Sunday evening Choir, under the direction of Eric Brandenberg provide musical leadership for the worshipping community. In recent times the ensemble now includes harpist Holly Eldreth and our new pianist/accompanist, Michael Schneider. We encourage people to become involved in this ministry; especially of interest are those with instrumental experience such as flute, violin, etc. Speak with Eric following a mass to find out more about how you might become involved.. Misa con música en español cada tercer domingo del mes a las 12:30 PM. The Mariachi Los Correcaminos de MSU Denver participate in the 12:30 Mass every third Sunday of the month. Minute Meditations by Franciscan media The best in prayer and spiritual nourishment, delivered to your inbox every day. SPIRITUAL FORMATION Saint of the Week St. Martin de Porres Father unknown is the cold legal phrase sometimes used on baptismal records. Halfbreed or war souvenir is the cruel name inflicted by those of pure blood. Like many others, Martin might have grown to be a bitter man, but he did not. It was said that even as a child he gave his heart and his goods to the poor and despised. He was the son of a freed woman of Panama, probably black but also possibly of indigenous stock, and a Spanish grandee of Lima, Peru. His parents never married each other. Martin inherited the features and dark complexion of his mother. That irked his father, who finally acknowledged his son after eight years. After the birth of a sister, the father abandoned the family. Martin was reared in poverty, locked into a low level of Lima s society. When he was 12, his mother apprenticed him to a barber-surgeon. Martin learned how to cut hair and also how to draw blood a standard medical treatment then care for wounds, and prepare and administer medicines. After a few years in this medical apostolate, Martin applied to the Dominicans to be a lay helper, not feeling himself worthy to be a religious brother. After nine years, the example of his prayer and penance, charity and humility, led the community to request him to make full religious profession. Many of his nights were spent in prayer and penitential practices; his days were filled with nursing the sick and caring for the poor. It was particularly impressive that he treated all people regardless of their color, race, or status. He was instrumental in founding an orphanage, took care of slaves brought from Africa, and managed the daily alms of the priory with practicality, as well as generosity. He became the procurator for both priory and city, whether it was a matter of blankets, shirts, candles, candy, miracles or prayers! When his priory was in debt, he said, I am only a poor mulatto. Sell me. I am the property of the order. Sell me. Side by side with his daily work in the kitchen, laundry, and infirmary, Martin s life reflected God s extraordinary gifts: ecstasies that lifted him into the air, light filling the room where he prayed, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and a remarkable rapport with animals. His charity extended to beasts of the field and even to the vermin of the kitchen. He would excuse the raids of mice and rats on the grounds that they were underfed; he kept stray cats and dogs at his sister s house. Martin became a formidable fundraiser, obtaining thousands of dollars for dowries for poor girls so that they could marry or enter a convent. Many of his fellow religious took Martin as their spiritual director, but he continued to call himself a poor slave. He was a good friend of another Dominican saint of Peru, Rose of Lima..
