2 Winter/Spring 2019 While worship is central to Germantown United Methodist Church (GUMC), it is only part of the disciple making experience of following Christ. Small group studies enhance the worship experience by providing opportunities to learn more about the Bible, discuss current issues, develop close personal friendships, grow in faith and learn how to apply the Christian faith in real life situations. Monthly Book Group 4 th Mondays, 10:00 a.m. noon There is no need to register, just purchase the book (or check-out from the library) and join us for a spirited discussion! 3 Learning Opportunities Membership Class: Welcome to GUMC Disciple Fast Track Into the Word, Into the World Sundays, January 6 March 31 Time: 5:00 6:30 p.m. (breaks determined by class) Cost: $20 Facilitated by Yolanda and Gerald Toney ytoney@germantownumc.org This adaptation of the original, bestselling Disciple Bible Study is ideal for busy people who want to fit an in-depth Bible study into their schedule. The study meets for a total of 12 sessions with a concentration on two books, Luke, and Acts, exploring some of the best loved stories in the New Testament, seeing them in fresh ways and expecting God to speak through them. We will learn and apply various spiritual disciplines and be guided in experiencing the gifts of Sabbath rest and renewal. Sunday, January 13 9:40 1:00 (a break for worship from 10:40 12:00) Rev. Tim Carpenter, Dr. Brad Gabriel, Rev. Erin Beasley What s distinctive about the United Methodist Church? Even if you re in church every Sunday, it can be difficult to feel like you really know the United Methodist Church s history, beliefs, mission, and culture. Join our ministers to learn about the roots of the United Methodist Church going back to John Wesley, and his devotion to inviting people to experience God s grace. Hear about the United Methodist Church structure and sacraments and get an overview of the mission and ministries of GUMC. If you have been worshiping with us and would like to learn more about our church, or if you think you might be interested in becoming a member, we invite you to attend our class. Participation in the class does not commit you to church membership, but it is an opportunity for you to find out more about the life and ministry of our church and for us to become better acquainted with you. This class is open to members, prospective members, or anyone wanting to know more about the United Methodist Church and GUMC. Childcare is available by reservation, and a box lunch will be provided. Register at germantownumc.org.
4 In the Dust of the Rabbi Wednesdays, January 16-February 13 Time: 6:00-7:00 p.m. Facilitated by Rev. Tim Carpenter Contact: Follow a rabbi, drink in his words, and be covered with the dust of his feet. --ancient Jewish proverb Disciples followed so closely to their rabbi that they would be covered with the dust kicked up by the rabbi s feet. Come, discover how to follow Jesus as we take part in a series by author, professor, and historian Ray Vander Laan. Each DVD session will take us through the breathtaking terrain of Israel or Turkey as we explore what it means to be a disciple. There is no cost for this class, but we do need you to register. Wednesday Morning Women s Bible Study: The Sermon on the Mount Wednesdays, January 30-April 3 (skipping Mar. 13) Time: 9:45 11:45 a.m. Cost: $18 Facilitated by Chesley Porteous chesleyporteous@gmail.com/ In the Gospel of Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount constitutes Jesus inaugural sermon and is a sketch of what life looks like when it turns Godward in response to the Kingdom s nearness. It was a message intended to turn every expectation his closest followers might have had upside down. Both practical and profound, the sermon challenges us to think differently about repentance, salvation, and sanctification. In this 9-session study by Jen Wilkin, we will seat ourselves on a mountainside to learn at the feet of Jesus.
5 It s Not Supposed to Be this Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered Wednesdays, Jan. 16 Feb. 27 Time: 6:00 7:15 p.m. Cost: $ 20 Facilitated by Dr. Kristin Miller kristinmmiller@bellsouth.net/ Life often looks so very different than we had hoped or expected. Some events may simply catch us off guard for a moment, but others shatter us completely. We feel disillusioned, and we quietly start to wonder about the reality of God s goodness. In this 7-session video Bible study, author Lysa Terkeurst offers a safe place to share disappointments and fresh biblical insight to get through painful situations. We ll discover the secret of being steadfast and not panicking when life actually does give us more than we can handle. Civility as Care of the Soul Wednesdays January 23-February 27, Time: 6:30 7:30 p.m. OR Thursdays, January 24-February 28 Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m. Facilitated by Rev. Dr. Brad Gabriel Contact: mgroh@germantownumc.org With all the division and dissension today, most of us will agree on one thing: civility is breaking down in our society. Have we forgotten the spiritual art of taking care of the bodies, minds, hearts, and souls of one another? Join Rev. Gabriel as we explore practices and resources to cultivate civility, a commitment to reconciliation that goes to the heart of the Gospel, and the price of incivility. John the Gospel of Light and Life Tuesdays, March 5 April 16 Time: 6:30 8:00 p.m. Cost: $13 Facilitated by Terry Aust terry.aust@yahoo.com/ The Gospel of John includes some of the loftiest and most loved verses in the Bible. The writing is filled with rich images and profound truths. John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they may have life in his name. This Lent, join author Adam Hamilton, and experience a season of spiritual growth and life-changing renewal while exploring the major themes of the Gospel of John. In this DVD study, Hamilton shares insights on the life, ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus through the Gospel of John.
6 Plenty Good Room: A Lenten Bible Study based on African American Spirituals Tuesdays, March 5-April 9 Time: 7:00 8:00 a.m. Location: Perkins Restaurant Cost: $10 Facilitated by Rev. Erin Beasley ebeasely@germantownumc.org/ This unique short-term Bible study combines an in-depth look at scripture, American history and the music and lyrics of six African American spirituals. This 6-session study provides biblical, social, and historical analyses of the spirituals and an opportunity to enrich your devotional and spiritual experience through God s word and music. Join Rev. Beasley at Perkins Restaurant & Bakery at the corner of Wolf River Blvd. and S. Germantown Road. You may eat before you arrive or order something from the menu, either way your body and soul will be fed! Entering the Passion of Jesus Tuesdays, Feb. 26 April 9 (skipping Mar. 12) Time: 9:30 11:00 a.m. Cost: $12 Facilitated by Mary Groh mgroh@germantownumc.org/ In this 6 session Lenten study by author, professor and biblical scholar, Amy-Jill Levine, we will explore the biblical texts surrounding the Passion story and the ordinary people who witnessed the events. By looking closely at the people who were part of Jesus life during the last days before the crucifixion their relationships and roles in the story we examine how that might deepen our understanding of what happened. In Entering the Passion of Jesus, Dr. Levine provides us with a more thorough and informative understanding of that fateful week.
