There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone, it is the same God at work. 1Corinthians 12:4-6
3 THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT Galatians 5:22-26 The Solid Rock For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12) Let us thank God for: The gift of Jesus Creating us Saving us The beauty of His world The privilege of prayer Supplying all our needs His grace and mercy One another and the opportunities He give us to be encouragers Our Pastor and ask that God will give him strength for each day s journey The doors that He opens for us Our families, remembering that He created families His promises Loving us Forgiveness How He has blessed us, asking Him to help us be a blessing to others His plan for our eternal lives, asking Him to help us seek clear direction on how to reach our destination ALL things both great and small The Holy Spirit is vital to the Christian life. Read about the fruit of the Spirit in today s passage, and ask, Can I be such a good person on my own? We need divine intervention to live as God expects. That s why He gives each believer a Helper, whose job is to produce Christ-like character in us. The heavenly Father knows that His children need assistance to comply with His commands. Even Jesus Christ s most faithful followers were, on their own, helpless to obey for instance, Peter, who pledged to be loyal until death, denied even knowing Christ (Matt. 26:69-75). Before returning to heaven, Jesus ordered the disciples to put their missionary work on hold until the Holy Spirit arrived (Luke 24:49). Only with the Spirit s aid could Peter the coward become Peter the rock and preach a challenging sermon that convicted many (Acts 2; see also Matt. 16:18). The Holy Spirit enters a believer s life at the moment of salvation and immediately sets about the work of producing spiritual fruit. This is the outward expression of a transformed heart. When we yield to God s nurturing hand, our actions and attitudes become more loving, more joyful, more kind, more gentle... (See Gal. 5:22-23.) He reaps a harvest of service from our life good works that grow our own faith and expand His kingdom. Allowing the Holy Spirit to bring forth Christlike character is not passive. Our part is to meditate upon God s Word so we can learn about His character and apply His principles. Then, instead of satisfying our flesh, we must make wise decisions each day that allow the Spirit to develop godliness in our lives. CHARLES STANLEY In Jesus Name
4 Heart disease is a killer, but we can do plenty to reduce our risk and prolong our lives. Research shows that making lifestyle changes can lower the risk for heart disease. Adopting heart healthy habits over the next 12 weeks will start us on the road to better health and longer life. 12 WEEK PLAN Week 1: Commit to getting fit. The American Heart Association reports that a large number of deaths each year result from not getting regular physical activity. Try to start exercising 3 times a week. Be sure to check with your doctor first if you haven t been exercising regularly. Build to 150 minutes weekly of moderate activity. The more exercise, the more health benefit. Week 2: If you smoke, STOP! You can have the most positive impact on your heart health by quitting smoking. It s also one of the hardest changes to make, so sign up for a smoking cessation program. If you don t smoke, make an effort to avoid secondhand smoke. Being around smoke can increase your risk for heart disease. Week 3: eat less fat. Fat is the most concentrated form of energy and calories. Cutting back on fat helps you lose weight and reduces your risk for heart disease and some forms of cancer. Week 4: Limit the amount of saturated fat in your diet: Lowering the amount of saturated fat in your diet is one of the best ways to lower cholesterol. Saturated fats are a main contributor to heart disease. These fats are usually solid at room temperature. They are found mostly in butter, lard, and animal fats. Week 5: Reduce your cholesterol. This week try to reduce your daily cholesterol to 200mg. All animal products contain cholesterol. For the healthiest choices, pick fish and skinless chicken instead of fatty cuts of red meat. They contain much less cholesterol. Week 6: Eat less salt. The average American, agge2 or older, has twice the recommended serving of sodium per day. Most sodium comes from salt added during food processing. Salt added at the table and in cooking is only a small portion of the total sodium that Americans consume. The AHA recommends that all Americans limit their sodium intake to 2,400 mg. per day. Lave the salt shaker off the table and eat fewer processed foods. Week 7: Eat more fiber. Fruit, vegetables, and whole grains contain dietary fiber. Depending on your recommended daily calories, work up to 3 to 5 ounces of whole grains, 2 cups of fruits, and three cups of vegetables each day. Drink more fluids to avoid constipation. High fiber foods help keep cholesterol in check. Week 8: De-Stress. Stress increases the risk of heart disease and speeds its progression. People who are constantly angry or stressed have higher rises in blood pressure that people who are not. This constant unrest can damage the heart. Be aware of stress and finds ways to control it. Week 9: Become a savvy grocery shopper. Most foods include important nutrition information on the labels. Paying attention to these numbers will help make sure you eat healthfully. Week 10: Find a new activity. This week try a new sport or activity you enjoy. You might try water-walking, inline skating, or slide aerobics. Week 11: Know what s on the menu. When you eat out, try to eat as well as you do at home. Ask your server how the food is prepared. Avoid cream sauces, cheese sauces, and fried foods. Choose broiled, steamed, or stir-fried dishes. Week 12: Eat breakfast every day. Everyone needs energy first thing in the morning, yet many people skip breakfast. Plan ahead! Have healthy foods ready to go. Reference: black History Month
