1 V I N E L I N C O L N, N E B R A S K A ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE The Shrewd & Dishonest Manager: Our Church s social teaching 1) proposes principles for reflection; 2) it provides criteria for judgment; and 3) it gives guidelines for action. The Catholic Catechism teaches: *Any system in which social relationships are determined by economic factors is contrary to the nature of the human person and his/her acts. *A system that subordinates the basic rights of the individuals and of groups to the collective organization of production is contrary to human dignity (CCC ). You cannot serve God and mammon (Luke 16:1-13, today s Gospel). Mammon is an Aramaic word for wealth used in this parable to mean that which is pursued and valued to the point of idolatry and SO separates the possessor of it from God. On the occasion of the beatification of José Gabriel Brochero (a 19 th C. Argentinian/Gaucho priest) last Saturday, Pope Francis said that Jesus wants missionary disciples! He praised this pastor with the odor of the sheep, who made himself a poor man among the poor, who always struggled to be very close to God and to the people, who did and continues to do such great good, like the caress of God for our people who suffer.
