4 Parish News We are excited about the new ecclesiastical year! All our ministries are up and running and we are looking for more of you to become involved. We would like to remind all parents that our Youth programs have started. As good Christian parents, we all have a duty and responsibility to bring our children to church so they can learn and understand our faith like your parents and grandparents brought you! We look forward to seeing all of you and your children in church! Parish Council The monthly Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday, October 17 th at 7:30 PM. Philoptochos News Once again, our appreciation to everyone who helped with our Feast Day and Greekfest in August! Also, special thanks to those who washed aprons and dish towels at their homes and to those who brought fresh basil for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14! The Philoptochos Society will hold its annual Autumn Bazaar on Saturday and Sunday, October 29 and 30 (see flyer). Please join us for our traditional fall season celebration. We will have delicious Greek food and pastry, raffles, a penny sale and other items sold by different vendors. We need volunteers to work at the bazaar as well as donations of the following: PASTRY: koulourakia, paximathia, kourambiethes, halva, karidopeta, melachrino (Please let Lucie know what kind of pastry you plan to make!) NEW ITEMS FOR THE PENNY SALE: small appliances, toys & gifts for children, gift cards. The next Philoptochos Board meeting will be held Wednesday, October 5 at 6:30 pm. New Horizons Soup Kitchen New Horizons Soup Kitchen is Sunday, October 23 rd, 4-6 PM. We are always looking for volunteers to join our group. This is such a rewarding experience! We are looking for volunteers to join our talented choir. All ages are welcome! All that is required is your passion and love for our church! 5 Parish Priest It is a great joy to see so many kids in the first day of our Sunday and Greek School classes! A church full of children is a sure sign of a blessed community! October is filled with Fall activities for everyone! From Youth Camp at the Metropolis of Boston Campsite, to Apple Picking, to Orthodox Word (a new gathering to talk about our faith), to the Philoptochos Bazaar. It is also the month we celebrate the Great Martyr St. Demetrios, St. Luke the Evangelist and St. Thomas the Apostle. Besides saying Chronia Polla to those named after these saints, we should all take a moment and contemplate the contributions of these saints to our faith. St. Demetrios, a commander of 1,000 Roman troops and Duke of Thessaly at the young age of 22(!), did not hesitate to confess Christ in front of his general (and future emperor) Galerius Maximinian. He readily gave up a certain future of riches and glory, to receive instead the death of a martyr after being pierced with spears. St. Thomas was also pierced to death with spears for having converted to Christ the entire family of the King of India. Before preaching in India, he preached in Persia and Media. But most of all, St. Thomas by doubting the Resurrection of Christ, he became an example of how faith should work, which is through the heart and not the mind. Finally, St. Luke, a student of St. Paul, wrote his gospel in Alexandria of Egypt, only 15 years after the Lord s Ascension. He preached in Greece, Italy, France and Dalmatia and received the death of a martyr at 80 years old! May we have their blessings. Youth Ministry News Greek School and Greek Dance Welcome back to all our Greek School families! It was wonderful to see everyone last week. We look forward to seeing the smiling faces of all our children every Thursday! Greek School Dance lessons will begin on Thursday, October 6th. Once again, thank you to Mrs. Angela Bourassa for volunteering her time to teach our children. OXI DAY OCTOBER 28TH - On Friday, October 28th, the Greek Orthodox faithful will celebrate OXI DAY. This is a National Day of Celebration in Greece, equal to the 25th of March! Thursday, October 27th, Fr. Gregory will give a brief history lesson on OXI DAY at the end of each Greek School session. Sunday School Welcome back Sunday School families! We look forward to seeing the children at Sunday School and their families in church every Sunday! Special thanks to our Sunday School volunteers! Goya - Joy - Mommy & Me - Altar Boys Our GOYA (Greek Orthodox Young Adult) Ministry is geared for young adults age We will also be reviving our Jr. GOYA (Junior Greek Orthodox Young Adults) this year, which will be geared for youth ages Have your child participate in GOYA or Jr. GOYA, it is a worthy experience! The October event for JOY will be Apple Picking! (see flyer) Our Mommy & Me Ministry is geared for our little ones (ages infant thru 4 years old). The first gathering of our Mommy & Me Ministry will be on Monday, October 17th, from 9:30 am- 10:30 am in the Youth Center, downstairs in the School Building. OCTOBER YOUTH MINISTRIES COAT DRIVE During October, our Youth Ministries will be collecting gently-worn or like-new WINTER COATS, HATS & MITTENS for infants, youth and adults. YOUTH MINISTRY SPONSORED COFFEE HOURS Starting on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16TH, and every 3rd Sunday of the month thereafter, the Assumption Youth Ministries will be sponsoring the Coffee Hour in our church hall. We are looking to put together 2 teams of volunteers to help set up, serve and clean up on one Sunday every other month. Come help us! YOUTH SEATING AREA The area on the left side of the church hall (as you come down the stairs from church), will be the Youth Seating Area after Sunday School and during the coffee hour. Within the next couple weeks, there will be new games, toys, crayons and books for children to use and play together while having their snack. Parents and children, please help clean up the area when finished. Thank You! 6
