2 VMPC: A Traditional Church with Spirit DEACON S FOOD PANTRY The church is grateful for the tens of pounds of non-perishable food received from our Partners in Education at Woodsdale Elementary School for the Deacon s Food Pantry. Woodsdale Elementary students were asked to bring food items to donate to Vance and they filled five, eight-foot tables full. In December, the generosity of the Deacon s Food Pantry encouraged 34 Ohio County Families with groceries. The Pantry can use Spaghetti Sauce & Pasta in January. Please use a Food Pantry Donations envelope in the pew rack for your monetary donations. Thank you to recent Souper Volunteers! In October, November, and or December 2018, we received contributions for: Peace and Global Witness and 2018 Per Capita. It is trhough support like yours that your Presbytery, the Synod of the trinity and the General Assembly are able to carry out their part of our common mission through Jesus our Savior. Connie Quinn, Treasurer of UOVP. Our Joy Offering Contribution will be $404. House of the Carpenter Weekend Food Program On Tue. Jan. 29, 2019 beginning at 5pm Vance Church will be packing weekend food bags at the House of the Carpenter for Madison Elementary School Students. Volunteers will pack bags with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and snacks for children to eat over the weekend. Many children go hungry over a weekend, as 100% of Madison students are below the poverty line. If you want to volunteer for our January shift, contact Erica or Jane today.

3 ...Serving the Greater Wheeling Community and Beyond Keeping Tootsies Warm in Wheeling The Deacons will be collecting warm winter socks for adult male and female feet now through Sunday January 27, Please bring two Socks so folks will have a pair, since most humans have two feet. The deacons will deliver these to the winter freeze shelter with Youth services systems. Fight off frostbite! I was naked and you clothed me Matthew 25:36 MISSIONS COMMISSION The Missions Commission has recently approved the following donations: Harmony House in Wheeling--$500 Youth Services System for the winter freeze shelter--$500 First Presbyterian Church in Wheeling for their feeding ministry--$500 Wheeling YWCA--$500 Chosen and Cherished Ministries for orphaned children in Haiti--$2,000 The Commission members are Rowena Baker, Linda Dudash, Louise Limbert, Bob Mead, Joanne Winters, and Chairperson Carol Obermann. Spend the Spring with Max Lucado Starting in January and running all spring, the Soup and Stuff series will be enjoying books by popular author and church pastor Max Lucado. Former Brazilian missionary and Senior Minister at Oak Hill Church in San Antonio Texas, Lucado is a widely acclaimed writer and speaker known for his simple, humble style. The Soup and Stuff series will begin at 6:00 pm each Wednesday night with a light meal of soup and bread and then move into a time of reflection on Lucado s works. We will conclude no later than 7:30 pm each night. The Lucado Soup and Stuff Series will begin with a five week look at his 2017 book Anxious for Nothing: Finding Clam in a Chaotic World which examines the Apostle Paul s teaching on Phillipians 6:4-8, be anxious for nothing. This best seller explores Paul s words and sees them as really providing a treatment plan from God on how to live without worries. Following this prescription celebrating God s goodness, asking for his help, leaving concerns with God, meditating on good things you will experience a peace that transcends all understanding. While anxiety is a part of life, it doesn t have to dominate life. With God as your helper and God s promises at your side, you can discover a life of calm and develop tools for combating the onslaught of anxiety. Our Lenten study, beginning the second week of March, will be He Chose the Nails: What God Did to Win Your Heart also by Max Lucado this simply written but profound book considers the implements presents in Jesus last hours to define in new and deeper ways of considering Christ s sacrifice for us. And finally our post Lenten study will be New York Times Best Seller and Lucado s most recent book, Unshakable Hope: Building Our Lives on the Promises of God, which unpacks 12 of the Bible s most significant promises, equipping you to overcome difficult circumstances by keeping your focus on the hope found in the promises of Scripture rather than dwelling on the problems in front of you. For every problem in life, God has given you a promise. Join Max Lucado and the Soup and Stuff series as we take a closer look at Scripture s unbreakable promises and show you how to live with unshakable hope.

6 Live, Move, Be It is hard to believe that the holidays are now behind us, and we are looking forward into the New Year. The holidays were a fun-filled time of community for us. Our church hosted a huge Thanksgiving dinner for our neighbors and friends, which was a great opportunity to get to know people better. We hosted a Philly-wide Cru Christmas party in our home, and our team spent several days evaluating the last semester and planning for the future. Directly after Christmas each year, Cru holds their annual student Winter Conference in locations all over the United States. Our regional conference is being held in Baltimore, Maryland with hundreds of college students in attendance. The theme of the conference is Live, Move, Be stemming from Acts 17:28 which says, In Him, we live and move and have our being. Caleb and I were asked to help with the World Café, an interactive place in the hotel where students can taste, see, and hear what God is doing around the world and explore the many ways God might use them to reach the nations through summer mission trips and internships with Cru. We are gearing up for a new semester of college ministry as well, with several new staff members joining our team in early January. Caleb is taking a seminary class with Cru when we return from Baltimore, and he is tentatively scheduled to take a group of college students from Philly to Puerto Rico on a Spring Break trip. We are excited for the rhythms of college ministry that allow for a variety of opportunities during the year.
