VANCE MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 905 National Road, Wheeling, West Virginia Church Telephone: (304) Fax: (304) vancechurch.org 2 nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 9, :00 a.m. Lectionary Selections of Scripture for this Sunday: Malachi 3:1-4 ~ Luke 1:68-79 Philippians 1:3-11 ~ Luke 3:1-6 The MISSION of Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church (USA) is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone through Worship, Prayer, Education, Fellowship, and Mission Outreach. 1
Gathering around God s Word ORGAN PRELUDE CHIMES ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING Love s Pure Light: A Candle Lighting Ceremony for Advent Words and Music by Joel Raney *** Responsive Litany In this season of Advent, we pray for God s peace, We witness the hostility between nations and neighbors. We see a world full of fractured relationships and unforgiving hearts. We seek relief from our own inner turmoil and restlessness. *** Please ALL join in singing. O come, O come, Emmanuel, and end this gloom of night. Bring hope to the world, bring peace to the earth, and fill us with love s pure light. GREETINGS and ANNOUNCEMENTS Please sign and pass the fellowship pad to the inside aisle. CALL to WORSHIP Leader: A voice cries out in the wilderness: People: Prepare the way of the Lord! Leader: God has promised us a new creation People: where righteousness will be at home. Leader: Blessed is the Holy One our God, People: who has sent a mighty Savior to redeem us. Leader: Jesus says: I am coming soon. All: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! OPENING PRAYER Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 2
OPENING HYMN of PRAISE O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, GtG 88, v. 3 & 4 CONFESSION and time of self-examination Leader: We have all sinned, not one of us is clean; but there is mercy for those who call on the name of the Lord. All: God of the future, you are coming in power to bring all nations under your rule. We confess that we have not expected your kingdom, for we live casual lives, ignoring your promised judgment. We accept lies as truth, exploit neighbors, abuse the earth, and refuse your justice and peace. In your mercy, forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your way, and to seek things that will endure when Christ comes to judge the world. SILENT PRAYER of CONFESSION SUNG RESPONSE For You, O Lord, My Soul in Stillness Waits, GtG 89, v.4 DECLARATION OF PARDON Leader: Every valley is lifted up; every mountain, made low. Now the glory of the Lord is revealed, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! All: Thanks be to God. Amen. GLORIA PATRI Angels We Have Heard on High, GtG 113 refrain Gloria in excelsis Deo! Gloria in excelsis Deo! PASSING the PEACE of CHRIST May the Peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! Encountering God s Word SONG for ILLUMINATION Prepare the Way of the Lord, GtG 95 (times 3) CHILDREN S MESSAGE Miss Jane The ANTHEM Bring Us Peace Lyrics by Pamela Martin: Music by Craig Courtney Bring peace to each person and peace to each heart, Bring peace to the loved ones from whom we re apart. 3
Bring peace to each home and to husband and wife, Bring peace to the fam lies living in strife. REFRAIN: Prince of peace, Child of peace, Dona nobis pacem. Fill us with Your true gift of love for one another. Prince of peace, Child of peace, Bring us peace, we pray. Bring peace between neighbors who live side by side, Bring peace to each city, each village and tribe. Bring peace between nations, peace near and afar, Bring peace that will blossom wherever we are. REFRAIN Peace for each morning, each step of the way, Peace that remains at the end of the day. Help us to see that for peace to begin, First we must find our true peace from within. REFRAIN Bring us peace today. Silent night. The SCRIPTURE HEBREW TESTMENT READING: Malachi 3:1-4 NEWER TESTMENT READING: Luke 3:1-6 The word of the Lord Thanks be to God! MORNING MESSAGE Rev. Erica L. Harley Responding to God s Word AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: A Brief Statement of Faith 10.4 We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily 4
tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! SONG of AFFIRMATION Wild and Lone the Prophet s Voice, GtG 163 INVITATION to the OFFERING Leader: All things in heaven and earth belong to God, who is coming in glory to reveal a new creation. Let us offer our lives to the Lord. OFFERTORY ANTHEM Welcome to Our World Words and Music by Chris Rice Choral Setting by Jack Schrader Tears are falling, hearts are breaking, how we need to hear from God. You ve been promised, we ve been waiting; welcome, Holy Child, welcome, Holy Child. Hope that you don t mind our manger, how I wish we would have known. But, long-awaited holy Stranger, make yourself at home, please make yourself at home. Bring peace into our violence, bid our hungry souls be filled. Word now breaking heaven s silence, welcome to our world, welcome to our world. Fragile finger sent to heal us, tender brow prepared for thorn, tiny heart whose blood will save us, unto us is born; unto us is born. So wrap our injured flesh around you, breathe our air and walk our sod. Rob our sin and make us holy, perfect Son of God, perfect Son of God, perfect Son of God. DOXOLOGY O Come, All Ye Faithful, GtG 133 refrain O Come, let us adore him; O Come, let us adore him O Come, let us adore him, Christ, the Lord. PRAYER of DEDICATION Dear God, we offer you these gifts that they might build up the work of your kingdom. Make us living witnesses to the way of your righteous reign. For the glory of your son, Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. 5
MORNING PRAYER & OUR LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in Heaven! Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen! Taking God s Word out, into our Worlds CLOSING HYMN Love Divine, All Loves Excelling, GtG 366 BENEDICTION BENEDICTION RESPONSE VANCE CHOIR ORGAN POSTLUDE Please stand if able.
