1 Faith Connection September 2018 WORSHIP TIMES 8:00 a.m. Traditional 10:30 a.m. Voices of Praise Sunday, September 16th Worship Time returns to 8:00 & 10:30 am with Education hour at 9:15 am Come and Join Us We have a new Prayground up front for young children and their families (if they want to utilize the space). Whether you bring children with you to worship, or you find yourself sitting near children, we hope you will give thanks for the opportunity to worship together, across the generations. Parents of Young Children We are so glad that you are here, and that you brought your children with you! Thank you! A few suggestions for your worship experience: Relax! God put the wiggle in children; don t feel you have to suppress it in God s house. It can be helpful to sit toward the front where it is easier for children to see and hear. But either way, sit in worship where you feel comfortable. Sing hymns loudly, pray, and voice the responses with enthusiasm. Children learn behavior by copying you. If you are excited about God, they will be too! Activity bags are available, located in both Prayground and at the back entrance near the ushers. Teach children some of the basic prayers; being able to join in with the prayers helps them feel they are contributing too. Also, it can be helpful to explain to your child what is happening during the service. Attend worship often, children like and need routines where they can participate. To those who are sitting near worshipping parents and children: A smile of encouragement is always welcome to parents with small, active children! And don t forget to greet the little ones. Get to know the family! Jesus welcomed the little children, and so do we. Whether talking, crying, laughing, or singing, the sounds of children in worship are joyful songs of praise. God's Peace, Pastor Gisele Mission Statement Our mission is to be a community of loving People who spread God s grace by teaching God s word, connecting followers in faith, and serving others. Recharge Sunday is just around the corner. Mark September 9 on your calendar as we kick off the Sunday school year together! Sunday School Registration will follow 9 AM worship.

2 Faith Education & Making Connections Mark your calendar Recharge Sunday September 9 (following worship) We kick off the new Sunday School Year on September 9, following the end of the church service. Registration, treats and this will also be the first time they will meet their teachers for their class! Confirmation News! 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Confirmation students and parents will be meeting Wednesday evening at 6:30 pm, September 5th in the sanctuary, to go over some expectations to the confirmation program, receive a calendar and contact sheet, and learn more about what confirmation will look like this year. If anyone is still interested in teaching Sunday School this year, please let know. familyed@faithmarshfield.org Even if you only want to teach a few times this year, let her know and you can be added to a substitute teacher list to fill in on the Sundays when a teacher is gone. Thank you teachers and students who seek and share God s word. The Education Team: Marty Yohn, Gary Grassman, Treva Tisdell, Pam Johnson Fall Adult Forum 9:15 AM Sundays September 16, 23, & 30 th Join Al Kviteck from Thrivent for a series on investments, choice dollars, and action teams. Faith Lutheran Youth (FLY) would like to thank everyone who supported our journey to the ELCA Youth Gathering this summer and for keeping us in your prayers as we travelled and experienced God in many different ways. Pictures from Youth Gathering have been posted to the Faith Lutheran Church Facebook page and will be also located below the video monitor in the lobby. Please join us on September 9 as we lead the same worship service we experienced on our last Sunday in Houston (albeit with a few more people). The youth will share some reflections from their journey along with a video compilation of highlights of the trip. We will celebrate with some of the same music we heard during the week and our sermon will be a Mass Gathering speaker that really connected with our youth. We will also bless some new Communion Ware that has a special connection for us. This will be a single service at 9 AM. The Gathering was just the beginning... the drawing back of the bow... the windup for the pitch. It was the launchpad, not the landing for the service work, experiences, fun and further steps along our faith journey. The point of going on a mission trip or to the Gathering is not simply to look ahead to the next one. Rather, these trips are like that sample of food you get handed in a store certainly, it s nice on its own, but the hope is that you ll bring a whole box home. And the desire for these trips is that students will sample respectful service and choose to bring it back with them into their everyday lives. The Gathering also has a strong focus on faith formation where the youth (and the adults in their lives) may not see an immediate life-changing impact, but this experience helps form the basis of their faith as they journey forth into adulthood. Find out more on how to become a Friend of FLY during our services on September 9 and in the weeks and months to come. There will be a table in the Narthex on Sundays during September. Contact Christine Stromme New members welcome! Can you sing? Before you say "No," don't be so sure. Our Faith Lutheran traditional choir is looking for more voices to enrich our sound. If you can carry a tune, we'd love to have you join us! Just show up at our season's first rehearsal at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5. We have singers of all ranges, abilities and experience. We have people who could sing in a metropolitan opera, and those who could never be soloists if they tried. Fortunately, you don't have to be a richly-voiced virtuoso. If you can sing the notes, your voice will add to a wonderful sound that our congregation really enjoys! You'll also get the added benefit of being closer to God. You'll repeat His Word over and over during our rehearsals, which generally last around 75 minutes and give everyone adequate opportunities to learn the music. Women of the ELCA Our fall planning meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 10 at 5:30 pm. Circle chairs, kitchen coordinators, program chairs and anyone interested in planning our future events, are welcome to attend. REGISTRATION FORMS IN GATHERING SPACE

5 Social Concerns/Green Team News As we come to the end of the summer we are wrapping up the Summer Food for Kids program and the Harvest Table project. The Summer Food for Kids will have provided nearly 100 boxes of food by its completion. Many thanks to all those who participated and donated food. This collaboration of Soup or Socks, United Way, St. Vincent DePaul, First Presbyterian Church, and Faith Lutheran Church stands as an example of what can be done when people join together to fight hunger. The Harvest Table continues in full swing until the middle of September. The social concerns/green team is providing cookbooks, Simply in Seasons, to the facilities that provide ideas for use of foods based on the season of the year. We hope this will encourage the use of fresh foods year round. We are beginning to gear up for the Christmas Bazaar on November 10 and 11 in the Gathering Space. Based on last year s experience, it will be a fun kick off to the Christmas season. Crafters are crafting, knitters are knitting, bakers are thinking about their favorite baked goods recipe, and everyone is looking around their homes for gently used items or things that need regifting to contribute to the bazaar. Many thanks to those who have supported the events of the social concerns/green team this summer including the adult forum on the new PDC Orenda Center and Medicare and You. We will be collecting for the PDC Orenda Center over the next months. We will also be looking for volunteers to help us with the recycling of the peanut butter and jelly jars from the NOW program. There are many jars (60-80) generated every week. Previously, they have been put directly into the trash. The team has volunteered to wash the jars and recycle the lids (our lids project) and put the jars into recycling. Watch for the opportunity to help with this project. Finally, thank God for the blessing of summer and warm weather and the plentiful harvest of fresh foods. Harvest Table - The social concerns/green team is collecting fresh produce on Sunday mornings in the narthex to be distributed to several local facilities- Mary's Place, Hannah Center, Orenda Center, and Shirley's House of Hope. If you have produce/fruit from your garden or from someone else's garden, or food from the farmers market or the grocery store that you would be willing to share, these facilities are excited to receive it. They all cook regularly for the residents. Many times the residents are preparing the meal. Members of the social concerns/green team deliver the food on Sunday mornings. We will continue to collect and deliver through September. If you would like to donate money we will use the funds to purchase fresh food to take to the different sites.

6 WANTED: Donations of Lemonade mix, cases of bottled water, Hershey Bars, bags of large marshmallows and boxes of graham crackers. We are planning a "Block Party" to celebrate the new school year and also to welcome in our neighbors, including those at the Hannah Center and the clients at the PDC. Music, lawn games, theater popcorn, Ice Cream, Rocky Rococo Pizza, lemonade and S'mores will all be part of the fun! Please plan to join in on the evening Thursday, September 6th! Bring a friend and a lawn chair! NEEDED: The October Altar Team has NO ONE signed up to help. Please consider this vital ministry of the church. Contact Sharon Tyrolt if you can help Stay at Home Mission Trip Our Stay at home Mission Trip will be working at the Hannah Center updating two of their rooms. The project will include taking out carpeting and replacing it with flooring, painting, building a closet, and adding décor.
