On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, Jesus, Son of David, have pity on me. Jesus stopped and said, Call him. He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus. Jesus said to him in reply, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man replied to him Master, I want to see. Jesus told him, Go your way, your faith has saved you. Immediately he received his sight and followed Him on the way. From the holy Gospel according to Mark The parable of the Good Samaritan told on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho. It was a story of compassion. Today we have the meeting of Bartimaeus, the blind beggar, that took place on that road. He heard it was Jesus, and called out to Him in his need. The dialogue was simple and clear. What he needed and Jesus response. How many other Bartimaeus are there in our own time? People, described by Pope Francis as marginalized sitting on the side. They too want to hear of Jesus, cry out to Him in their pain, and seek the compassion, help and mercy of Jesus. It might seem easy, to cross to the other side of the street, to speed up, or ignore the cry. Is that the Christian response? In the mail each day, on the television, there are continued requests for the kindness and mercy of Jesus. The requests for donations grow and the hurts of others tug at our hearts and purse strings. We cannot respond to all requests, but we can as Jesus did. The faith of Bartimaeus restored his sight and he followed Jesus on the way. The hand of Jesus reaching out and responding to one more request can make a big change in the life of someone else..his WORD TODAY, by Rev. William J. Reilly
