1 The All SoulsMessage u All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church u April/May 2013 u Volume 64, Issue 2 u From the Rector The Difference between Joy and Happiness T he other day I visited one of our parishioners who is in an assisted living facility. The situation is not ideal. Our parishioner is much more alert and articulate than most in that facility. She has traveled and has been educated in ways that most of her fellow residents have not. The little family she has lives in other states, and she has outlived most of her closer friends. When I arrived, a health aide was just leaving the room. The parishioner said brightly, Oh, here s my priest. Father John, meet Abena, who helps me more than I can say. Abena is from Ghana and has been telling me all about her family there. Wouldn t you just love to visit Ghana one day? I said hello to the young woman and agreed that I would like to visit Ghana one day. Indulging us both with good humor, Abena was all smiles as she left the room. I have no idea what that young woman has been through in order to leave family and homeland, come to the United States, and work long hours for little pay, taking care of other people. But however her day might have been going, I m fairly certain that our parishioner made things a little bit better. What passed between the parishioner and Abena and me what filled the room of that facility was joy. B ad food, uninteresting people, and ongoing physical challenges do not usually make for happy times. but joy is still a possibility. Joy is very different from happiness. Happiness is an emotional state that depends on the particulars of a situation. If asked whether she is happy in the assisted living facility our parishioner would answer no, if she were honest. Bad food, uninteresting people, and ongoing physical challenges do not usually make for happy times. Frederick Buechner has written Happiness turns up more or less where you d expect it to a good marriage, a rewarding job, a pleasant vacation. Joy, on the other hand, is an notoriously unpredictable as the one who bequeaths it (Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC, p. 47). Buechner points to the chief difference between happiness and joy. Joy comes from God. Joy is slower and deeper. It comes from a place of faith as God s Spirit flows through us. Joy depends on faith that God is in charge, no matter how things may look. It comes from a faith that God will keep us in the palm of his hand and that no danger can ever do us in. It comes from a faith that God who raised Jesus from the dead will also bring us to resurrection in eternal life where we will be made whole, and well, and one with God s love and the love of all the faithful departed. Psalm 30:6 reminds us that Weeping may spend the night; but joy comes in the morning. Easter represents the future in God for us, a future of morning everlasting. u John Beddingfield, rector rector@allsoulsdc.org See In this issue on page 3.

2 From the Senior Warden A Season of Hope I ve been giving some thought lately to hope as a key aspect of our faith. On the one hand, this is certainly a hopeful season for All Souls. A few days ago, we heard that hope spoken three times in the words, The light of Christ as we slowly lit our darkened church during the Great Vigil of Easter. The next issue of The Message will include a date for our Groundbreaking for our accessibility extension: that should be in early July. On the other hand, we ll probably be beginning to see the impact of Sequestration on workers across the Washington, DC are and all forms of news media will continue to provide one thing after another that argues against hope. Among other reasons for thinking about hope, we re in the season between major outreach events (Cleveland Park Day was last October and Capital Pride isn t until June) and the Communications Committee and I are thinking about how we approach people who have, perhaps, never even been to church to invite them to All Souls. We have to succinctly explain to these folks why they would want any part of a church. I think that offering a genuine hope is part of the key to speaking to them. Recall the words of 1 Peter 3:15, 16:...but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and reverence. The hope embodied in our faith has to speak to people outside the Church through us. During Lent, many of us read and prayed through Martin Smith s A Season for the Spirit. He summed up the hope embodied in our faith like this:...what makes Jesus invitation to faith different is that he prevents his hearers from repressing in the name of faith all the hard evidence in life that counts against hope. The faith he lived and was releasing into the world was a faith that said Yes while steadily looking into the face of everything that seems to make No the right answer to life in the world. He spoke of persecution and poverty, of desertion and death. And in the end it was not a matter of speaking at all.... It is only after this devastating exposure of all that counts on the side of No that God pronounced the decisive Yes by raising Jesus from the dead on the third day. We need to offer and I think that All Souls does offer an approach to faith that is hopeful, but real. OK. So, to one degree or another, we believe this and have hope and other people don t believe this. So how does this hope speak to them? No matter how much we d like to get off easy, I think that this may be another one of those points where we don t. That hope has to speak to people outside the church through us, and we have to be actively involved with that hope. The writer of the Letter to the Hebrews uses action verbs when he writes of our engagement with hope: In the same way, when God desired to show even more clearly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it by an oath, so that through two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible that God would prove false, we who have taken refuge might be strongly encouraged to seize the hope set before us. (Hebrews 6:17 18) Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (Hebrews 10: 23 25) So hope is something that we have to seize and hold onto. If we want to speak hope to a world that needs hope, it s incumbent on us to seize that hope and to hold on to it. Hope is somehow tied to the things that we do in response to that hope: And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. One point that Smith made again and again in A Season for the Spirit, is that by virtue of our baptism and faith that Christ and the Holy Spirit are very much within us. I love how Paul put it: the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Continued on next page. 2 All Souls Memorial Episcopal Church Living Up to Our Name

3 From the Senior Warden A Season of Hope Continued That indwelling is inextricably tied to hope. You ll note that the quotation from 1 Peter about hope begins with the words...but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Bearing in mind the role of the Holy Spirit within us, listen to what Paul says: Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. (Romans 5:1 5) As always, I encourage you to pray, read Scripture and other things focused on faith, and to be faithful in worshiping at All Souls. And I pray that you will experience the hope which is inextricably part of our faith in your heart. u Dale Lewis, senior warden dalealewis@aol.com Notes on Parish Outreach Episcopal Center for Children M ay I tell you a little about the Episcopal Center for Children? Located in the neighborhood of Chevy Chase D.C., it is a private, non-profit day treatment program (accredited by The Joint Commission) for children who have been referred by schools, agencies, clinics, etc. The program goal is for each child to return to public school and a healthy relationship with family and community. Up to 63 children between the ages of 4 and 10½ who experience emotional difficulties at home or in school are eligible for admission, and the fees are paid by the referring agency or jurisdiction. The Episcopal Diocese of Washington endorses the school but does not provide any funding. Financial support comes from area churches and designations from the United Way and the Combined Federal Campaign. Chelping onsider this wonderful local resource for young children and their families. Another source of funds comes from the Auxiliary Board of the ECC. I represent All Souls on that committee and I d love company! Our primary fundraiser is a Musical Showcase presented in November; many local Episcopal schools participate and we have a celebrity master of ceremonies, so watch for more information as the date nears. We also solicit Campbell Soup labels just hand them to me at coffee hour and we ask our parishioners to designate ECC at Giant and Safeway to receive points when you shop. Each of the member churches supplies cookies as a treat for the children, and May is our month. Look for a collection box in the undercroft beginning May 5. Those are only some of the things we do! Please look at the ECC website ( or talk with me at coffee hour about this wonderful resource for young children and their families. u Martha Domenico thedomenicos@verizon.net In this issue From the Rector: The Difference between Joy and Happiness 1 From the Senior Warden: A Season of Hope 2 Notes on Parish Outreach: Episcopal Center for Children 3 From the Junior Warden: All Souls Forward Approaching the Finish Line 4 Annual Parish Meeting Supplement & Nomination Form 5 6 News of Parish Philanthropy: Endowment Grants April/May 2013 Calendars 8 9 Baptism Dates 10 The Parish Register 11 Article Deadline for Next Issue: June/July/August The Message is published every two months except for a June/July/August issue and a single issue in September. 4 From the Junior Warden All Souls Forward: Approaching the Finish Line A s we near the end of the All Souls Forward Capital Campaign, I wanted to thank everyone who has helped to make it a success and that is basically everyone! Dale and John have shown extraordinary leadership, sensitivity, and vision throughout the campaign. They have kept us on course and focused on a tight set of goals. They possess a deep understanding of our congregation and have an innate sense of what is possible. This campaign is a tribute to their insight, vision, and faith faith in us and faith in what God can do working among us and through us. The Capital Campaign Steering Committee has worked day and night to raise money and guide the development and design of the building. Here are the major pieces of their work for the parish: Solicited donations from more than 250 individuals/families Provided masterly architectural and design support Designed the campaign logo Offered insights, advice, and even historical perspectives on design issues Organized community meetings about the project Developed our campaign finance and administrative procedures Lead the Capital Campaign Kickoff Celebration: managed, decorated, catered, designed, and constructed centerpieces, set up, took down, and cleaned up the undercroft T campaign his is a tribute to insight, vision and faith: faith in our parish and faith in what God can do working among us and through us. Wrote the campaign brochure Took the pictures for our campaign brochure Wrote informational pieces for the campaign Wrote and designed the special issue of The Message newsletter Interviewed campaign consultants Leveraged professional relationships to secure gratis graphic design support for the campaign brochure Met with the local ANC (advisory neighborhood commission), the District regulatory authorities and the historic preservation review board Handed out leaflets about the project at the farmers market Provided wise construction and contracting expertise Interviewed potential construction firms Called and sought references for construction firms Offered helpful comments on our website functionality Offered advice about named gift and memorial opportunities Offered their home for a donor event Provided terrific quotes for the campaign brochure Wrote, designed and printed a community mailer about the project Researched foundation and corporate sources of support for the campaign and developed fundraising proposals to them Offered sensitive and graceful editing of campaign materials Conducted thorough financial research into construction and long-term financing options Provided superb financial advice Gave generously not only of their time from the project s inception but also of their personal financial resources. Finally, everyone should know that almost everyone else in the parish contributed financially to the campaign. As of this writing, approximately 98% of everyone solicited to date has made a pledge to the campaign. By comparison, some fundraising literature suggests participation rates in church capital campaigns normally run between 65% and 80%. So take pride in what we have accomplished as a community of faith. And consider it a warm up for what God may call on us to do next as a parish. 5 The Annual Parish Meeting Supplement At the May 19 meeting, we will elect a Senior Warden, and three general members of the Vestry. Vestry Elections On Sunday, May 19, our parish family will gather for the annual meeting of the All Souls congregation. Among other business, members will elect a Senior Warden to a two-year term, and three general members of the Vestry to serve three-year terms. Serving on the Vestry requires a significant commitment of time, talent, and involvement in parish activities. Canon law requires that Vestry members be confirmed members of the Episcopal church. Those wishing to stand for election should look carefully at their professional and personal commitments to ensure that they have the time necessary to meet the requirements of service. The Vestry meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of the month during the Spring and Summer, and at 1 p.m. on the third Sunday of the month during Fall and Winter. Members also serve on parish committees. If you would like to stand for election, or would like to nominate a candidate, please complete a nomination form and put it in the parish administrator s box on the office door (or give it to the Senior Warden) by April 28, Speak with any member of the Vestry to discuss your interest in serving. u Dale Lewis, Senior Warden Special Meeting of the Parish Sunday, May 5, 2013 following the 11 a.m. Mass to amend the bylaws of the corporation. See handouts in the narthex, undercroft, and at Senior Warden According to the parish bylaws, The Senior Warden shall be the chief lay representative of the Parish and, in the absence of the Rector, shall serve as Chair of the vestry. In our parish, the Senior Warden is the chair of the Stewardship Committee, which is responsible for the annual pledge campaign. He or she is also an ex-officio member of various committees, and is the vestry liaison to the parish office. The Senior Warden must be elected by a majority vote of the congregation present at the annual meeting and will serve a two-year term. No person shall hold the position of warden and general member of the Vestry simultaneously. General Members of the Vestry According to the parish bylaws, general members of the Vestry: a. act as election judges at annual meetings; b. manage, control, and direct the property of the parish; c. choose a minister; d. solicit and take subscriptions for and otherwise provide for the expenses of the church; e. appoint a registrar and treasurer; f. provide necessary books and records for the registrar and treasurer; g. establish policy for expenditures on behalf of the parish; h. generally perform such services as are needed for the maintenance of the church other than pastoral care; and i. elect a delegate or delegates to the Diocesan Convention. Eligibility to Vote As our spiritual family prepares for this year s annual meeting on May 19 following the 11 a.m. Mass, we intend to continue our custom of being as inclusive as possible regarding voice and voting eligibility. Canon law clarifies the often confusing matter of voter eligibility. It specifies that all of those who attend All Souls who are baptized Christians and who are recorded on the parish rolls may vote on decisions made at a parish meeting and to elect members of the Vestry. The baptism may have taken place in any denomination. Our parish bylaws establish that any canonically recognized member whose baptism or letter of transfer is recorded in the records 30 days before the date of the annual meeting is an eligible voter. According to canon law, those who attend All Souls and have come from the Roman Catholic tradition and have not been received into the Episcopal Church must ask the senior warden to be placed on the parish rolls in order to vote. This is because the Roman Catholic Church will not transfer baptismal information to a Protestant church. To be eligible to vote, your name must appear on the Voter Eligibility List. This list will be available for inspection in the narthex and undercroft beginning April 14. The deadline for completed information to be included on the Voter Eligibility List is May 12. April/May

7 News of Parish Philanthropy Endowment Grants 2013 T he Endowment Board and Vestry have approved fifteen grants from the Endowment for 2013 in addition to a pledge of $300,000 to the capital campaign here at All Souls. Most of the requests come from members of the parish who are actively involved in the work of the organizations and they know first hand how the funds are used. We are meeting needs in medical care, education, meal programs, jobtraining, and for the environment; we are reaching out with help to those far less fortunate than ourselves. Our grants are to organizations as close by as in Adams Morgan and reaching across the metropolitan region and as far away as Central America, South Africa, and Jerusalem. Grants are made in ministry, mission, and capital improvements. A capital improvement is acquisition of real estate or a major alteration or addition to the physical plant. The Board evaluates capital improvement requests using the accepted legal definition. For example, a recent request from All Souls for a grant for repair of crumbling stonework qualified as a capital improvement as it helps to preserve the structural integrity of the building. Items such as painting, equipment acquisition, furnishings or other redecoration do not meet the established guidelines. Note, however, that an exception was made in the replacement of the failing kitchen refrigerator on the basis of imminent threat to health and safety that had not been anticipated in the operating budget. In 2000 the Episcopal Diocese of Washington encouraged all of the member parishes to establish endowments and to use the funds out in the world beyond ourselves. All Souls had a small endowment that was managed by an All Souls Endowment Grants for 2013 The Board this year consists of Joe Howell, Mike McGee, Pat Dresser, Jim Solomon, and Larry Sturgeon. The grants that were approved are typical of the requests received. Note that the All Souls endowment board makes initial grant awards in February but holds back ten to fifteen percent of the total until a later date. In that way the parish has been able to respond to Superstorm Sandy and other recent disasters. Local Grants (11) Anacostia Watershed Society fund volunteer work by parishioners $500 Bishop Walker School operating expenses $5,000 Church of the Epiphany meal program for homeless $1,500 Cleveland Park Village membership subsidies for one year $2,250 College Bound college tour $5,000 DC Recovery Community Alliance general operating expenses $5,000 Jubilee Jobs, Inc. job-training program $5,000 Kids Corner scholarship for one low-income family s child $1,000 Seabury Resources for Aging Ward 5 meal program $10,000 St. Mary s Court dinner meal program $5,000 The Art League art program for 10-to-12 year old at-risk girls (in partnership with the Alexandria Court Service Unit) $5,000 Local Subtotal $45,250 International Grants (4) Hoops Sagrado youth program to Guatemala $1,000 Kwasa, South Africa meal programs and teaching staff $5,000 Sustainable Harvest International organic farming and agroforestry in Honduras $5,000 The Order of St. John Patient Relief Fund at the St. John Hospital Jerusalem $10,000 International Subtotal $21,000 outside firm. At the time, there were no rules about how it should be used. Following the guidance of the Episcopal Church Foundation, the vestry adopted by-laws, rules, and resolutions for the endowment and the endowment board. The Board made up of former senior wardens and parishioners with financial expertise follows these guidelines very carefully in considering each grant request. Soon after the establishment of a board at All Souls, the financial firm handling the church s account stopped taking accounts of our size. With the excellent advice of Jim Solomon, the Board decided to handle the funds itself. We have saved annual fees and have had very good yearly returns on the funds. The Board also oversees the investment of the money in the Rectory Fund; those funds came from the sale of the rectory next door to the church and are allocated to the rector s housing allowance. Most of the funds in the Endowment have come from parishioners who belonged to the church many years ago. We have only received three bequests since the establishment of the Board in I encourage all of us in the parish to consider making a bequest in our wills to further the work of our Endowment. Whatever size the gift might be, it will make a difference as we reach out to those in need for many years to come. Pat Dresser, Chair of the Endowment Fund Board 2013 Total for 15 Grants: $66,250 April/May
