1 Attica UMC Link JANUARY 14, 2015 Pastor Ron Rouse Cell (248) Elk Lake Road, Attica Church (810) Church Web Site Church Attica United Methodist Church - A place where love works to transform the people s lives for Jesus Christ Just 10 More Minutes Baptism by Fire By Pastor Ron Mark 1:4-11, Acts 19:1-7 Have we ever heard the phrase Baptism by fire? I am sure we have and that is exactly what we receive when we are baptized in the name of Jesus Christ Baptism by fire. In Matthew 3:11 we are told that Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire. In Acts 2 if we remember the tongues of flame that settle on the disciples at Pentecost in the upper room and they are filled with the Holy Spirit. John prepared the way and washed away sin with water like our daily shower to the dirt of the day but with Jesus, we repent and our sins are washed by His blood and through a baptism in Christ, we are baptized by the Holy Spirit. Acts 19:1-7 we see Paul explain the difference between a Baptism by John of repentance and a Baptism in the name of Jesus our Lord when we receive the Holy Spirit. We also know that John Baptized Jesus. Why would this be we might ask, a Baptism of repentance when Christ had never sinned. This was not only to serve as an example for what we should do but let us not forget, He died on the cross not for His sins, but ours. His Baptism by John was not repentance for His sins but ours. When we are baptized, we are anointed and claimed by Christ as one of His, a disciple and a part of His church. It is also a public statement saying I accept Him as my Lord and Savior. So be baptized in Jesus name and accept Him and He will fill you with the Holy Spirit baptized by fire Amen. Remembering Luther Mason Luther Mason, 94, of Attica, passed away, Friday, January 9, 2015 at Stonegate Health Campus in Lapeer. Luther John Mason was born on February 13, 1920 in Athens, Michigan. Luther was a member of the Attica United Methodist Church, Imlay City American Legion, Imlay City Masonic Lodge, 32nd Degree F & A M Masonic Lodge and the V.F.W in Athens, Michigan. 2 New Superintendent of the Blue Water District Appointed On December 22, 2014 our Bishop, Deborah Lieder Kiesey, announced the appointment of Rev. Elizabeth A. Hill to serve as the Superintendent of the Blue Water District of the Detroit Annual Conference, effective July 1, Rev. Hill is currently serving as the Senior Pastor of Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone, MI. The Blue Water District is currently being served by Interim District Superintendent Rev. Duane E. Miller. He was named by Bishop Kiesey on December 1, 2014 to serve in an interim basis following Rev. Dr. Joanne R. Bartelt s request for an immediate disability leave. "I look forward to having Elizabeth join the Detroit Cabinet. Commented Bishop Kiesey, She is passionate about rural and small church ministry, and has shown great effectiveness in all the places she has served. The Bishop added, She has been deeply loved in her congregations, and I have no doubt she will bring those same relational skills to the Blue Water District." Hill has served as Senior Pastor at Memorial United Methodist Church in Gladstone since Previously she served at Embury UMC in Birmingham and St John s UMC in Royal Oak. She holds an Associates in Arts from Henry Ford Community College, a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Michigan, a Masters of Arts from Eastern Michigan University and in 2006 received her Master of Divinity from The Methodist Theological School in Ohio. Attica United Methodist Church Council Meeting Minutes January 10, 2015 Call to Order: About 9 am Devotion and Prayer: Pastor Ron Attendees: Pam Wilcox, Carol Holtz, Pam Holihan, Harry Wilcox, J.R. Lomerson, Paul Leone, Chuck Edwards, Ruby Clark, Cletta Juip, Pastor Ron Rouse, (Guest: Attorney) Ron Rickard. Trustees: Ron Rickard explained that Mr. and Mrs. William Conrad, former members of AUMC, had died and left a percentage of their irrevocable trust to our church. Normal trust distribution takes about four months, however, there are some estate problems with bank, neighbor and heirs. Pam H. asked the board for approval to accept Carol H. to be our executor, all accepted and Carol signed papers for Ron. Harry asked about the liability on the property to the south (Vivian s) and Ron recommended we buy it rather than fencing the property line. Groups - Missions/Outreach Reports Christian Education Adult Classes: Pastor reported that class attendance is down due to cold weather and traveling. The new study beginning Sunday and Tuesday is Son of God by Pastor Rick Warren. There are about in class. Attica Begindergarten Club: Will begin on Monday and there are about ten children if everyone comes. Sunday Children: Fluctuating attendance due to family members being sick. Food Ministry Food Bank: It is sad that there is such a need in our community. We are blessed to have an abundance of helpers. When people are too prideful and non-desirous of leaving their names but need food for their children, pastor said it is better to err on giving food than being food police. Dinner at AUMC: Bart and Carol will be cooking for the upcoming meal. The Health Dept. may be visiting us to certify us. Please remember to wear gloves, hair net or hat and to use sanitizing strips. Missions: UMW: $500 was given to the Methodist Children s Home for Christmas. 32 women attended Pam s Pantry Party. Pam W. thinks the regular meetings are at the wrong time of day as there were so many in attendance. Administrative Committee Reports Trustees: Pastor believes we need to hold a separate meeting on purchasing the property (Vivian s). There needs to be full congregational approval. We need to have three representatives to sign the mortgage: whoever signs checks and two trustees. (Trustees are Carol H., Paul Leone, Larry Clark, Chuck Edwards, Josh Meyers) Pastor will contact the Michigan Area Loan Fund Representative to make sure the signers are not guarantors and it would not affect their credit scores. Harry made a motion that Paul Leone will be pro-tem vice chair to sign papers. Ruby seconded. Carried. Pastor would like to call an open meeting with Doug Ferral, Dan Winslow and the trustees for January 31 at 9 am. The task list was placed on the bulletin board in the basement Attica UMC LINK 2014 Page 2
3 Doors at rental were hung. One window was done and one to do. The carpenter donated the work so Pam W. suggested we give him and his wife free dinner at the Harvest Dinner. Renter in upstairs apt. 2 is being given legal 30 day notice. Renter is almost $1,700 in arrears through the end of December, Pam H. said a woman called her with a piano she wanted to donate. Pastor moved we accept the piano for the basement with moving expenses not to exceed $250 and Chuck seconded. Carried Financial Report: Harry reported there is $10, and about $6,000 is reserved for specific uses. Old Business Safe Sanctuary Policy: Pam has signed up to be a trainer Food Bank Guidelines: Attica Days is sponsoring a Valentine s Day dance at Castle Creek to benefit the Food Bank. Feeding the Spirit Updates: Keep Mary B. and others in your prayers, texts and with cards of encouragement. The easel with the LORD s prayer currently on it is also very noticeable. Communion Table/Pulpit Chairs: Pastor passed around a catalog of items in the price range he was given and will be ordering the ones he chose. Bible Binding: Pastor will ship the pulpit Bible to a Grand Rapids firm to get a better quote on fixing it; it will be at least $250. It fell apart when he picked it up. Some quotes were as high as $800 and it may be 6-8 months to get it fixed. Altar Cross: Pastor had volunteered to make a cross for the altar. It is a beautifully finished piece of solid oak backlit with LED s. New Business Outreach: Paul Leone would like to know if we could help The Refuge. He is going to find out what they need, when and where we can help. Sanctuary: J.R. would like us to revisit carpeting the sanctuary. Carol H. made a motion to have new carpet and flooring in the sanctuary with vinyl under the pews. Ruby seconded. Carried. Pam H. will call Rick Guerrero for an estimate and Cletta will call the man who laid her vinyl. J.R. would also like an estimate for vinyl baseboard trim install in the basement. For accountability, whoever lays the carpet must also lay the vinyl. Children s Ministry: Acolytes must be a minimum of eight years old. One white robe ($30) and liturgical colored rope belts will be ordered. Offerings: Money received as general offerings will be tithed to missions with the rest going to the general fund. The meeting was adjourned about 11:30 am. Next Meeting: Scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2015 at 9 am. Help Needed While old man Winter seems to be on vacation, we are looking ahead to the days when he returns. Help will be needed to toss around salt and shovel the white stuff away from the sidewalks along the top parking lot and Fellowship Hall entrance. For starters, let Pastor Ron know if you are available. Item of the Month We continue to have great responses to the item of the month. These items are for the needs of our own Food Bank which can t be obtained from the Eastern Michigan Food Ban k. We thank you so much for your support. This month s item is Tooth Paste.
