Please register in advance for the class and Baptism. Godparent Pre-Requisites: Godparents must be practicing Catholics in good standing, 16 years of age or older, Baptized and Confirmed Catholic. 2 Page 2 READINGS FOR SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 2018 TWENTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Gospel: John 6:51-58 FOCUS: We grow in wisdom as we grow in our understanding of God. Our human understanding limits us, and so Scripture and the Church provide teachings that help us to know, love and trust in God. In Jesus, we come to know the Father; and through Jesus, as the Bread of Life, we come to have eternal life. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Wisdom has prepared her table for those seeking understanding. In the reading from Ephesians, we are instructed to live not as foolish persons but as wise. In the Gospel, Jesus tells the crowds that he is the bread from heaven, and that whoever eats of him will have eternal life. 3 Page 3 Flip the Classroom Comes to St. Mary s Religious Education Program As we get ready to begin another year of religious education here at St. Mary s, I am happy to offer to your family a new program called Flip the Classroom that will be available to all of our children in Grades 1 through 6. For the past five years, St. Mary s has been using the Faith and Life Series, published by Ignatius Press, as our religious education textbooks. Now, Ignatius Press is offering an interactive online program for religious education classes like ours. This new program recognizes that children are becoming better at, and more comfortable with, learning through technology rather than through traditional methods. Flipping the Classroom allows children to learn at home, at their own pace, with fun and interesting classes that they access online. This program uses religious videos, interactive games, religious art and music, along with traditional content in order to teach the children all aspects of the Catholic Faith at every grade level. Each lesson will be completed before the child can progress to the next, allowing children to learn at their own pace. Parents and our administrators in the religious education program will be able to track the student s progress through the lessons during the year. Because of this, the students enrolled in the Flip the Classroom program do not come to weekly religious education classes. Instead, eight times a year they come for a one-hour class, or talk, or prayer service at Msgr. Ryan Hall. Each online lesson takes about forty minutes to complete. They may be done on a computer or a tablet, and at any time and in any place. This means families with busy schedules will have more free time, while the student is actually spending more time learning the Catholic Faith, and hopefully also enjoying it much more. Families with children in Grades 1 to 6 may choose to enroll the students in the Flip the Classroom program or you may opt to stay in the traditional weekly religious education classes. Because Grades 7 & 8 are part of a set Sacrament of Confirmation program, children in those grades are not eligible for Flip the Classroom. You must make your decision by September 10, Also, once your child is enrolled for the year, you will not be able to change programs. The 2018 fee for either the Flip the Classroom program or for the traditional weekly religious education classroom is the same as last year: $100 for one child; $200 for two children; and $275 for three or more children. If you are interested in learning more about this new program before making your decision, we are offering an information session at Msgr. Ryan Hall on Monday, August 20 at 7:00 pm. Mackay Council Knights of Columbus will be conducting its Charitable and Benevolent Fund Drive after all the Masses the weekend of August 25/26. Representatives from the Knights will be selling chances after all Masses next weekend. We are now fully-supplied for the coming school year! CHURCH HANDICAPPED RAMP There is a ramp for handicapped access at the Church. It can be found off the parking lot, and goes around to the back of the building. We encourage you to use it if you have difficulty with the front steps. FATHER LAUDER S LECTURES Two of Fr. Lauder s minute lectures will be shown every Tuesday at 9:00 p.m. on Net TV, and the Telecare channels: 29/137 for Optimum and 296 for Verizon FiOS. There are now a total of 24 of Fr. 5 Page 5 Fr. Lauder Presents The Catholic Novel & Friday Night Film Festival The Catholic Novel Series - Rev. Robert Lauder in collaboration with the School of Evangelization will present the Catholic Novel series for the Fall of The series will begin on Monday, September 10 th from 7:30-9:00 p.m. The cost of the series is $40. Friday Night Film Festival - Fr. Lauder and The Secretariat for Evangelization and Catechesis presents: 56 th Friday Film Festival beginning on Friday, September 7 th, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Center in Douglaston. The cost is $25 for the series or $6 for a single film. Ryan Hall SUMMER SCHEDULES MASS Beginning July 1 st through and including September 2 nd, there will be no 12:15 Mass on Sundays in the Hall. The 12:15 Mass in the Hall will resume on Sunday, September 9, BAPTISMS During July and August Baptisms will be celebrated at 12:30 p.m. RECTORY OFFICE HOURS Effective Monday, July 2 nd, the Rectory Office will be open from 9:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Beginning Friday, July 6 th, the Rectory Office will be closed on Fridays during July and August.
