2 Page 2 READINGS FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 15, 2018 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER First Reading: Acts 3:13-15, Second Reading: 1 John 2:1-5a Gospel: Luke 24:35-48 FOCUS: Jesus is the fulfillment of Scripture. The risen Christ made himself known to his disciples. After having revealed himself in Emmaus in the breaking of the bread, he encouraged the disciples in Jerusalem to look at and to touch his wounds. He reminded them of what Scripture had foretold, just as Peter reminded the community in the first reading. LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, Peter proclaims the Good News of Jesus resurrection, calling his listeners to repentance and salvation. In today s Epistle, John encourages believers to trust Jesus, their Advocate, and show their love for God by keeping his commandments. Our Gospel reading presents the risen Christ making himself known to his disciples. Readings for next week, April 22, Fourth Sunday of Easter: Acts 4:8-12; 1 John 3:1-2; John 10:11-18 FOSTERING STEWARDSHIP AS A WAY OF LIFE PARISH SACRIFICIAL GIVING The disciples in today s Gospel come to know Jesus in the breaking of the bread. When we share what we have with those who are in need, we too will discover Jesus in our midst. Parish Sacrificial Giving Summary Thank you for your continued sacrificial gifts to St. Mary s. 3 Page 3 THE PASTOR S PAGE My dear people of St. Mary s: Prior to Holy Week and Easter, I wrote to you in this space about Pope Francis decision to canonize his predecessor, Pope Blessed Paul VI. The canonization will take place most likely in the Fall of this year. Blessed Paul was Pope from 1963 to his death in He presided over the Second Vatican Council, and shepherded the Catholic Church though the very difficult times if the 1960 s and 1970 s. But he was also the first Pope to travel abroad. We, of course, take that for granted since Pope St. John Paul II made 104 pastoral visits to 129 countries, traveling over 725,000 miles in 26 years. Pope Paul visited 9 countries over his fifteen years as pontiff. His first trip was in 1964 to the Holy Land. But, memorable for us is his October 4, 1965, visit to New York City. The Pope only spent fourteen hours in the city. Landing at Kennedy Airport (recently renamed after the assassination of the President), he said: Greetings to you, America. The first pope to set foot upon your land blesses you with all his heart. He then made his way immediately to St. Patrick s Cathedral and was greeted by Francis Cardinal Spellman. The Pope then traveled to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to meet with President Lyndon Johnson. Following that meeting, the Pope made his way to the United Nations building in order to address the General Assembly. It was the first time a Pope had visited that body. The pope pleaded for peace in a nuclear world: No more war! Never again war! Peace, it is peace that must guide the destinies of peoples and of all mankind. The Pope went on to the Bronx in order to celebrate Mass at (the old) Yankee Stadium for nearly 100,000 people. Following that, at 10:30 pm, he was taken to the World s Fair grounds in Flushing Meadows, in order to visit the Vatican Pavilion, where Michelangelo s famous statute The Pieta was on display, having been loaned by the Pope for the occasion. By midnight, he was on his way back to Rome. I was there myself, for this historic visit. I even had my picture taken with the Holy Father. The Papal motorcade traveled on a circuitous route throughout the city so that many people could see the Pope. My parents, living in Manhattan at the time, stood on the east side of Third Avenue, across from the New York Foundling Hospital on 68th Street, to await the motorcade. A teller in the bank behind them snapped a photo as the Papal limousine passed by; she later gave it to my mother. In the photo, my father holds me, and my mother stands next to him wearing a scarf, and my sister is in front of her. I am the eleven-month old baby, the only one in the enormous crowd looking in the wrong direction! But, technically, I can say I have a photo of me with Pope St. Paul VI! Fr. McCartney

4 Page 4 Dear Friends: Thank you for your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The Catholic Ministries Appeal offers us a unique opportunity to be the Hands of Christ s Mercy and His instrument of Dramatic Missionary Growth on Long Island and beyond, as it supports so many good works we accomplish together as Church. The Catholic Ministries Appeal supports works of evangelization and ministries that provide spiritual, educational and charitable assistance to hundreds of thousands of men, women and children across our Diocese. So much of the vital work of our Church would not be possible if not for your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Our Holy Father Pope Francis said: Let us be renewed by God s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of His love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy. The Catholic Ministries Appeal is a critical part of that calling, making it possible for Christ s mercy to reach throughout our entire Diocese. We see it in the smiles and laughter from our seniors at our community centers who, maybe for the first time in a long time, are socializing and sharing a hot meal with others. We see it the faces of those who, because of Catholic Charities, have long term sobriety and are reunited with their families. We see it in the joy of a seminarian as he completes his studies, and is ordained to the priesthood, and we see it in the excitement of a college student, away from home for the first time, finding faith-filled friends through a Catholic Campus Ministry program. Through your prayerful consideration and reflection, I invite you to once again take part in the work of our Church by making a sacrificial gift to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Together we can continue to be agents of Jesus mercy. Thank you for your love for the mission of the Church. I will be keeping you and your family daily in my Masses and prayers. Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend John O. Barres Bishop of Rockville Centre

5 Page 5 OUR NEXT BOOK DISCUSSION TITLE IS. Angels (and Demons): What Do We Really Know About Them? by Dr. Peter Kreeft. This book is published by Ignatius Press. In response to actual questions many people have asked him about angels and demons, well-known author and philosophy professor Peter Kreeft separates fact from fantasy and myth from reality as he answers 100 common questions about these spiritual beings. Based on a very popular college course he teaches on this subject, this book responds to the incredible amount of interest in angelic beings and attempts to clear up some of the misinformation abounding in the numerous books today on what we know about these mysterious spirits. Drawing on the Bible, traditional Church teachings and St. Thomas Aquinas, Kreeft gives straight, clear answers to the perennial and philosophical questions asked about angels and demons throughout time. In his typical lucid, profound and sometimes humorous stile, Kreeft answers such questions as What are angels made of, How do angels communicate with God, How do angels communicate with us, Do demons, or devils, or evil spirits really exist? and many more. Discussion roundtables will be held in Mid-May or early June, dates to be announced. Those who would like their copy to be pre-ordered via the rectory, please submit your request by Tuesday, April 17 th.
