Installation of new Lieutenant Saturday 11:30am Mass at the Cathedral on the 17th September 2 New Auxiliary Bishops for Sydney Bishop Anthony Randazzo and Bishop Richard Umbers were ordained Auxiliary Bishops of Sydney at St Mary s Cathedral last night, coinciding with the Feast of St Bartholomew, the Australian Bishops Conference said in a statement. They will join Bishop Terry Brady as the three Auxiliary Bishops serving the Archdiocese of Sydney. Anthony Fisher OP, Archbishop of Sydney, was the Principal Consecrator and Celebrant. Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane, and Stephen Lee Bun-sang, Bishop of Macau, were the Principal Co-Consecrators. In his words of welcome, Archbishop Fisher extended a special welcome to Bishop Denis Browne, Emeritus Bishop of Hamilton, New Zealand, who baptised Bishop Umbers. He also welcomed civic and religious leaders and representatives from sister Churches. In his homily, Archbishop Fisher said: "Our two new bishops have been appointed in interesting times." After listing news headlines from the past two months, he said: "There will be many more such challenges for humanity in the coming years. And behind the violence and insecurity, the populist politics and shaky economics, the inauthenticity in sport, culture, and religion, there are individual heartbreaks and profound moral-spiritual issues. "In the face of such challenges the cry of the human heart is for wisdom and inspired leaders. We now look to these two young youngish priests to offer our civil and ecclesial communities much-needed witness to holiness, courage, and mercy, and fresh insights into the way ahead." 2 Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Palestine Queensland Lieutenant Investiture O Mary Immaculate, Sweet Queen of Heaven and Earth, here we prostrate at the feet of Thy royal throne, fully confident in your goodness and in Thy power illuminated, we beg Thee to turn Thy compassionate gaze on Palestine, the land that is Thine more then any other, because Thou has adorned it with Thy birth, with Thy virtues, with Thy pains; this land where Thou has given the world The Divine Redeemer. Remember that in this land God chose Thee to be our Mother and a dispenser of grace. Watch over Thy earthly homeland, wrap it in Thy very special protection. Dispel the darkness of error where shone the eternal Sun of Justice. Grant that the promise of Thy Divine Son to form one flock under one shepherd is soon fulfilled. Deign finally to obtain for all of us the grace to serve God in holiness and righteousness all the days of our lives, so that in the hour of our death, to the merits of Jesus and Thy maternal assistance we may pass from to the heavenly Jerusalem. So be it. Monica Thomson (née O'Dea) was one of six children. She was born and educated in the Valley, attending St Patrick's, and All Hallows'. She graduated in Dentistry, and married David, also a Dentist and a Knight of the Order. They have three sons, Doug, Iain and Andrew all married. David and Monica enjoy their now 8 grandchildren. Monica also has a law degree and practised as a Barrister in the 1990's before returning to dentistry. She practises in both private practice and as a senior clinical supervisor at the Dental School at U of Q. Monica was one of the inaugural members of the Equestrian Order when it was established here in Brisbane in 1997 so it will be significant that she will be the Lieutenant when the Order celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. The slaughter of Fr Jacques Hamel For people in the West, the slaughter of Fr Jacques Hamel in a church in Rouen is a scene of almost unimaginable horror. But Catholics and other Christians in the Middle East have been living with this sort of terror for years, writes Damian Thompson. cathnews.com/cathnews/26150-french-attack-brings-homedaily-horror-of-middle-east-life 2

Compassion on tap: Portable shower for the homeless Two Catholic former schoolmates from Brisbane who started the world s first mobile laundry service for the homeless have now launched their first portable shower, reports The Catholic Leader. Nic Marchesi and Lucas Patchett, former St Joseph s College, Gregory Terrace, pupils, and who were named 2016 Young Australians of the Year, launched their first mobile shower van in Brisbane yesterday. It will mean free access to a hot shower in Brisbane for the city s homeless, which the co-founders say is a basic human right. Being clean, restores self-esteem and confidence, but the positive conversations and interaction our volunteers provide for our homeless friends is another important thing Orange Sky Showers can offer, Mr Marchesi said. Being clean and feeling connected with the community is a basic human right. People doing it tough in Brisbane can now shower for free but more importantly have an opportunity to spend time with our volunteers and have a conversation. Partnering with The Shine On Foundation, Melbourne, the Orange Sky team will trial the shower van throughout Brisbane before stationing it permanently in Melbourne. The mobile shower van follows a fleet of 10 laundry vans that has been serving Australia s homeless since Mr Patchett said the idea to provide portable showers for the homeless was among the first questions people asked when the Orange Sky team first started. The Shine On Foundation were the first people to believe in us to enable our service to diversify, Mr Patchett said. We are proud to showcase our first prototype here on the streets of Brisbane. 4 'Australia must protect older people' Director General of Schools in Palestine and Israel As more and more Australians live longer, we should celebrate the great "success story" of our ageing population and, as a fair and compassionate nation, foster solidarity among all generations, says the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council "Australia must protect older people who are most vulnerable to hardship and who are at risk of feeling they are a burden on society," said Bishop Antoine-Charbel Tarabay at the launch of the Australian Catholic Bishops Social Justice Statement, entitled A Place at the Table: Social justice in an ageing society. The statement highlights the significant contribution that older people continue to make to the life of the community. The number of Australians aged 65 and over will more than double from 3.6 million today to 8.9 million by the middle of the century. Around 75 percent of men and 85 per cent of women are reaching retirement in good health and with around 20 years of life ahead of them. There is a risk, however, that a society ill-prepared for demographic change may assess these trends as an economic threat. Already, we hear divisive terms such as "intergenerational theft" or invidious comparisons between "productive workers" and "burdensome retirees". "Our community must ensure that both the costs and the great benefits of an ageing population are shared equitably. Where policies encourage longer working lives, we must ensure that vulnerable groups share the benefits of employment and are protected from poverty in their later years," the statement adds. The Bishops challenge a "throw-away" culture that casts older people as being burdensome or even dispensable. They strongly affirm the sanctity of life and call for a culture of compassionate care that values and protects people in their final years. RELEASE Call for communities of compassion as population ages SOCIAL JUSTICE STATEMENT A place at the table: Social Justice in an Ageing Society Fr. Iyad Twal has been appointed new Director General of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Palestine and Israel. RELEASE The Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, His Excellency Archbishop-elect Pierbattista Pizzaballa issued yesterday a decision appointing Fr. Iyad Twal as Director General of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Palestine and Israel. It is worth noting that Fr. Iyad had previously served the Parish of Birzeit, the Patriarchal Seminary, and the parishes of Zababdeh and Beit Sahour. He earned a Ph.D. in Theoretical Philosophy and Political Philosophy. He was later appointed as Head of the Religious Studies at the University of Bethlehem, and Professor of Philosophy at the same University Archbishop Pizzaballa Archbishop Pizzaballa: Church in the Holy Land has no means nor power. She only has Christ and His Grace HOLY LAND Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate, explains the episcopal motto Sufficit tibi gratia mea (2 Cor 12:9) he has chosen for his Episcopal Ordination that will take place in Bergamo, Italy, on 10 September. The Church in the Holy Land has no means and no power. She only has Christ and His Grace. Mgr. Pierbattista Pizzaballa explains in this way the episcopal motto Sufficit tibi gratia mea (2 Cor 12:9) he has chosen for his episcopal ordination that will take place in Bergamo, Italy, on 10 September, by the laying of the hands of the Prefect of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, Cardinal Leonardo Sandri. The Holy Land Mgr. Pizzaballa explains in the booklet of his ordination is at the crossroads of divisions and difficulties of all kinds: between the Churches, between monotheistic faiths, and between the peoples living there. Such difficulties always seem huge and insurmountable. In this context, the Church appears to be overwhelmed by these situations. Others may be tempted to believe that they are called to bring their own salvation based on their means and strategies into the tragedies of that Land. Yet, in these circumstances, the Word of God reminds us that it is to Grace alone, and nothing else, that we should entrust ourselves. The Church in the Holy Land has no means and no power. She only has Christ and His Grace. Continues on page 5 4
5 Continued from page 4 This Biblical reference has motivated the choice of my motto: We should be aware that our mission is a witness to the Grace that has touched us first, and from this Grace we should always start again. The coat of arms chosen by Mgr. Pizzaballa shows the city of Jerusalem as it was depicted in the Middle Ages on the seals of the Latin Kingdom, that is, as a city with walls and a door, from which emerge the truncated cone-shaped dome of the Holy Sepulchre, the Tower of David and the round cupola of the current Mosque, a depiction that was associated with the motto Civitas Regis Regum omnium. The colours are similar to those used in the coat of arms of Jerusalem during the Latin Kingdom, featuring the golden cross of Jerusalem on a silver background. These colours are to be considered unique and exceptional in heraldry as they contravene the so-called rule on tincture that metal should never be put on metal, nor colour on colour. It is only because Jerusalem is unique that this was considered acceptable and therefore not a mistake. The choice of these colours is a tribute to the city of Jerusalem that is hence honoured with those most precious colours that in heraldry are only attributed to it. In heraldry, gold is a symbol of faith and truth, and silver of purity, innocence, humility and justice. Even today, Jerusalem maintains its vocation to be a house of prayer for all peoples, and the three places depicted in the medieval coat of arms are also a reference to the different religious traditions that coexist there, and to the peace that the Bishop himself is called to build among them. 7 Why young Catholics are leaving the faith Why young Catholics are leaving the faith, and how to stop them Published: 07 September 2016 Tension between faith and science. Young Catholics are leaving the faith at an early age, sometimes before the age of 10. It's not because they are bored at Mass but because they are looking for proof of God, the author of a new report claims. Catholic News Agency has the story. Those that are leaving for no religion and a pretty big component of them saying they are atheist or agnostic it turns out that when you probe a bit more deeply and you allow them to talk in their own words, that they are bringing up things that are related to science and a need for evidence and a need for proof, said Mark Gray, a senior research associate at the Centre for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. It s almost a crisis in faith, he told CNA. In the whole concept of faith, this is a generation that is struggling with faith in ways that we haven t seen in previous generations. Dr Gray recently published the results of two national studies by CARA - which conducts social science research about the Church - in the publication Our Sunday Visitor. One of the surveys was of those who were raised Catholic but no longer identified as Catholic, ages 15 to 25. The second survey was of self-identified Catholics age 18 and over. In exploring why young Catholics were choosing to leave the faith, he noted an emerging profile of youth who say they find the faith incompatible with what they are learning in high school or at the university level. In a perceived battle between the Church and science, the Church is losing. And it is losing Catholics at a young age. The interviews with youth and young adults who had left the faith revealed that the typical age for this decision to leave was made at 13, Dr Gray wrote. Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed, 63 percent, said they stopped being Catholic between the ages of 10 and 17. Another 23 percent say they left the faith before the age of 10. There is a trend in the popular culture to see atheism as smart and the faith as a fairy tale, he said. And I think the Church needs to come to terms with this as an issue of popular culture, he continued. I think the Church perhaps needs to better address its history and its relationship to science. 7
