2 the latin patriarchate museum Every Christian can witness to God in the workplace, not only with words, but above all with an honest life (H.H Pope Francis) THE LATIN PATRIARCHATE The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem (LPJ) was restored on July 23, Pastoral work was initiated in 1853, with Beit Jala as the first Patriarchate parish in Palestine. As soon as a parish was established, a school followed. Most of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Palestine, Jordan and Israel were established in the nineteenth century, in the absence of state-established public schools. The schools were opened in communities that greatly suffered from poverty, ignorance, and poor health conditions during the Ottoman rule. They were extensions of the Church s spiritual effort. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has played a major role in the general growth of communities for the last decades. It has been a historical companion to the local community and has made efforts to alleviate the impact of adverse social and economic constraints. During the occupation, and particularly now, the Latin Patriarchate has invested tremendous efforts and resources in promoting spiritual support, education, social justice, economic development, and housing initiatives. I INTRODUCTION History The Latin Patriarchal Diocese of Jerusalem, in its present form, was established in 1099 with the Crusaders. According to the Crusaders thesis, there was no residing Patriarch by the time of their entrance to Jerusalem; therefore, they installed a Latin Patriarch to govern the Church. When Saladine took over Jerusalem in 1187, the Latin Patriarch had to reside temporarily in Acre until After that period, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem remained a titular residing in Europe. Because of these conditions, Pope Clemens VI, in 1342, made the Franciscan Friars, led by a Custos (literally meaning the Guardian), the official custodians of the Holy Places in the Holy Land. In 1847, Pope Pius IX reestablished the residential Latin Patriarch See in Jerusalem. The first Patriarch to come back was Joseph Valerga, 37 years old, with broad experience of the East, and knowledge of local oriental languages. He had served, first, in the Apostolic Delegation of Beirut and had made a lengthy visit to Iraq with the Chaldean Church. As a Patriarch, he was also appointed the Apostolic Delegate for the Middle East with residence in Beirut, where he used to spend six months of the year. With the reestablishment of the diocese, the Equestrian Order of the knights of the Holy Sepulcher was also reestablished by the same Pope Pius IX who entrusted its reorganization to the first Patriarch Valerga. Consequently, the two historical institutions were reestablished and put together. For the same aim which is to serve Christians in the Land of Jesus, the Patriarchate had to work in the land itself, and the Order, throughout the world, had to support this new diocese in the Holy Land. 2

3 Mission The Latin Patriarchate seeks to improve the living conditions of the local communities by implementing several programs and initiatives that focus on the following: Spiritual and pastoral ministries; Educational opportunities throughout the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Israel, and Jordan; Capacity building programs through skills development training initiatives; Micro and macro enterprise development programs in agriculture, production, and business; Community service centers, orphanages, clinics, humanitarian and social supports; Development of projects in infrastructure, construction and affordable housing for Christian families; Operation of three Ecclesiastical courts, which process matrimonial and personal status cases (estates, wills, inheritance, etc.) PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Latin Patriarchate has initiated a project to establish a museum, devoted to documenting and displaying the history of the Patriarchate, since its establishment in The LPJ museum will include the following: Clergy outfits and garments of the Patriarchs throughout history. Jewelry, singular pieces of religious art, crosses and relicts. Tools and apparatus of the Patriarchs, Bishops and priests. Rare original oil paintings of the Saints, Patriarchs and Popes, will be displayed on the walls of the museum. Precious gifts, books and icons that were given to the Patriarchs and Bishops from dignitaries from several countries, throughout history. Pictures and memorabilia of important events and people, that visited the LPJ, such as previous Popes, Cardinals and other Church leaders. OBJECTIVES The primary goals of this project are: To remind: the first goal is to create awareness about the LPJ s history and mission throughout the years in Palestine, Israel, Jordan and Cyprus. There is a discernible need to preserve the history of the Latin Patriarchate since its establishment, and since the appointment of the very first Patriarch. 3

4 The museum s content focus will articulate the history of the LPJ Patriarchal leadership since 1099, and will present records of important events which happened throughout its history. The museum itself will also be an expression of its continued commitment to its mission in serving everyone, with special emphasis on the indigenous Christians of the Holy Land. To teach: A second goal is to actively create knowledge about the history of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. There is the sense of lack of knowledge regarding both the history and the mission of the Patriarchate. The museum will therefore hope to educate visitors about the LPJ s history, by presenting some of the lesser known as well as well-known aspects of the Patriarchate, including art, paintings, icons, pictures, clergy cloths, and documents. To commemorate: The final objective of the museum is to preserve and commemorate implicit knowledge about the LPJ. There is a need to preserve the stories, pictures, tools and cloths of the very oldest Patriarchs to commemorate their lives and display their consecrated mission in serving others. There is also a desire to preseve the memory of the LPJ s affiliates who played crucial roles in the history of Jerusalem, generally and the LPJ specifically. BENEFICIARIES The museum target audience are: All groups, pilgrims and visitors of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. Guests and formal friends of the Patriarch and bishops. Knights of the Holy Sepulcher. Individual donors, institutions and supporters of the LPJ. All the religious communities, priests, nuns, and consecrated people from all over the world, visiting Jerusalem. SCOPE OF WORK The LPJ Museum will be located at the second floor of the Latin Patriarchate headquarters in Jerusalem, Old City. The establishment of the museum will require civil, carpentry, refurbishment, mechanical and electrical works in order to be completed. 4

5 EXECUTION /DURATION The Latin Patriarchate technical team have prepared all the necessary detail designs and budgets for the project. The project will require five to six months from staring date, aiming to be completed in The work will be managed and supervised by the Latin Patriarchate engineering and procurement staff, and will comply with all LPJ internal contracting and supervision procedures.
