EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Northern Lieutenancy of the United States The Squire Vol. 26 No. 1 Winter 2014 Dear fellow Knights and Ladies, New Lieutenant Appointed By Sir P. Thomas Pogge, KGCHS, Lieutenant I was certainly surprised by the phone call from the Grand Magisterium asking if I would serve as Lieutenant; however, I am happy to serve and consider it an honor to do so. What I have learned so far is what a wonderful group of people we have in our Lieutenancy. Special thank you on behalf of the Lieutenancy to all of our members who worked so diligently for the success of the Des Moines Meeting. Currently, work on the Denver Meeting is well underway. I am happy to announce that Sir Richard Purdon, KGCHS, has agreed to continue his role as Secretary for the Lieutenancy. I am gaining true appreciation for all the work it takes to maintain an accurate database of our membership. Please be diligent in advising Sir Richard of all address changes. Also, notify Sir Richard of the death of a member so that Masses may be offered by our Grand Prior and the Latin Patriarch on a timely basis. New Lieutenant \after receiving his office. Sir Michael Jareske, KGCHS, is assuming the position of Vice President and Recorder of the Legacy Society. Sir Michael holds a CPA certificate, is a financial officer in a major corporation, will retire this February and is well regarded by our Finance Committee. He will do a great job shepherding the Legacy Society. As I speak with members of our Order, there seem to be three themes emerging. The first is the enhancement of spirituality for our own members. This is being reinforced by materials emerging from the Grand Magisterium. The second is the request for more information on what is truly happening in the Holy Land and how members can help. The third issue is whether there are ways we can streamline the process of preparing for the Annual Meetings. The Area Councillors and Officers met in Omaha the weekend of January 24-26, excellent discussion and progress on the three above mentioned issues. There was Make plans to attend the Annual Meeting in Denver on September We ask Our Lady of Palestine to bless the work of the Order, protect our fellow Christians in the Holy Land, and help bring true peace. 1
Grand Prior s Reflections on the Holy Fathers Exhortation By By Most Rev. Joseph F. Naumann, KC*HS, Grand Prior Most Rev. Joseph F. Naumann, KC*HS Pope Francis has announced his intention to make a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land on May of this year. The Holy Father s only other trip outside of Italy to this point was last summer to World Youth Day in Brazil. It is significant that the 2nd international trip of Pope Francis will be to the Holy Land. The priority that Pope Francis has given to visiting the Holy Land underscores the importance of the mission of our Order. We must all pray that the Lord will bless and make fruitful the Holy Father s pastoral visit. In particular, let us ask the Lord to use the visit of Pope Francis to strengthen the Christians of the Holy Land as well as to open up the path to peace. I encourage members of the Lieutenancy to read carefully The Joy of the Gospel, Our Holy Father s Apostolic Exhortation regarding the New Evangelization. In The Joy of the Gospel, Pope Francis issues a series of challenges to every Catholic. Echoing one of the great themes of the Pontificate of Benedict XVI, Pope Francis extended an invitation to all Christians to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him [Jesus] encounter them [3] The Holy Father declared: No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her, since no one is excluded from the joy brought by the Lord, [3] Pope Francis also reminds us that every Catholic, every true disciple of Jesus, is called to be a Missionary. Evangelization, sharing the Good News of Jesus with others, is not the responsibility of a few elite specialists within the Church, but is actually an essential element of what it means to be Catholic. Pope Francis writes: The New Evangelization calls for personal involvement on the part of each of the baptized. Every Christian is challenged, here and now, to be actively engaged in evangelization Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are disciples and 2 missionaries, but rather we are always missionary disciples. [120] The Pope emphasizes that this New Evangelization must be characterized by the joy of those who call ourselves disciples of Jesus. The Holy Father asserts: an evangelizing community is filled with joy; it knows how to rejoice always. [24] Pope Francis describes the many challenges of our time that make it difficult for people to receive the Good News of Jesus as well as the challenges that can rob Christians of joy and make us hesitant to share the Gospel with others. Pope Francis counsels us to be wary of a practical relativism which entices even supposed disciples of Jesus to act like God does not exist, adopting a lifestyle that is more about security and comfort than bringing others to Our Lord. The Holy Father exhorts us not to allow ourselves to be robbed of missionary enthusiasm. [80] The Pope also warns both priests and laity not to be obsessed with protecting our free time and thus hesitant to commit ourselves to apostolic activity. The Holy Father observes: people feel an overbearing need to guard their personal freedom, as though the task of evangelization was a dangerous poison rather than a joyful response to God s love which summons us to mission and makes us fulfilled and productive. [81] Pope Francis warns against an obsession with immediate results that can lead to a spiritual sloth and indifference. He counsels Catholics to guard against a pessimism that is spawned from disillusionment with world, with the Church and with ourselves. He identifies a constant temptation to cling to a faint melancholy, lacking in hope, which seizes the heart like the most precious of the devil s potions. Called to radiate light and communicate life, in the end they are caught up in things that generate only darkness and inner weariness, and slowly consume all zeal for the apostolate. For all this, I repeat: Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of the joy of evangelization. [83] The Pope also talks about a pessimism and defeatism in some quarters of the Church. It is in this portion of the Exhortation that the Pope uses a phrase, which has continued on pg. 3
continued from pg. 2 been translated into English as sourpuss a first for that term to find its way into a papal document. The Pope reminds us that despair is not compatible with a faith that holds God s power is made perfect in our weakness. (2 Cor 12:9) Pope Francis points out even in the unbelieving desert of modernity the disciple of Jesus discovers signs for hope. In the desert we rediscover the value of what is essential for living; thus in today s world there are innumerable signs, often expressed implicitly or negatively, of the thirst for God, for the ultimate meaning of life. And in the desert people of faith are needed who, by the example of their own lives, point out the way to the Promised Land and keep hope alive. Let us not allow ourselves to be robbed of hope! [86] In the end, the Holy Father reminds us that we will not be effective evangelizers unless we experience Our Lord s love for us and treasure His friendship. The primary reason for evangelizing is the love of Jesus which we have received, the experience of salvation which urges us to ever greater love of him. What kind of love would not feel the need to speak of the beloved, to point him out, to make him known? [264] If we have discovered in our own hearts that only the love of Our Lord can satisfy our deepest longings, then we will be confident that the greatest gift we can give to another is to help lead them to Jesus. Our passion for Jesus requires us to have a passion to bring others to Him. We can only bring others to Jesus by a willingness to enter into their lives. This means a willingness to share the suffering and misery of others. The Pope compares our eagerness to be close to the poor and those who suffer to touching the wounds of Jesus. At the beginning of the New Millennium, Blessed John Paul II exhorted us to put out into the deep! The Joy of the Gospel describes for us precisely what that means and requires. The New Evangelization is an invitation to each of us to experience the joy of Our Lord s love for us and the joy of sharing His love with others despite all of the risks, challenges and complications. Be not afraid to put out into the deep! News from Area Councillors Kansas City, Kansas Benedictine College in Atchison, KS recently announced that Lady Patricia Kearney Elder, LHS, will receive the Cross of the Order of St. Benedict at the Scholarship Ball on Feb. 22nd. Lady Patricia was recognized for her tireless efforts to support Catholic Scouting, National Christian Forensics and Communications Association and significant leadership in supporting the right to life. Omaha, Nebraska Most Rev. George J. Lucas, KC*HS, Archbishop of Omaha, was elected chair of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops Committee on Higher Education this past fall. Archbishop Lucas will be serving a three-year term. The aim of the committee is to bring Catholic values to public policy and to provide guidance for Catholic education. North Dakota The Bismarck Diocese in Western North Dakota hosted a Thirst conference October 25-27th. Over 6,000 people attended to hear keynote speaker Dr. Scott Hahn. One of the highly anticipated presentations was from Cardinal Timothy Dolan, KGCHS, Archbishop of New York City, who is a good friend of Bismarck Bishop David Kagan. The Knights and Ladies of the Order processed for all the liturgies. Save the Date 2014 Annual Meeting and Investiture Denver, CO September nd Theme: Tu es Petrus...(you are Peter)...on this rock I will build my Church Note from the Editors: In the fall issue Sir Richard and Lady Sue Purdon provided a report on the Order s Year of Faith Pilgrimage. Their article did include the reflections of Sir Dr. Jack and Lady Mary Francis Lane. We regret the error in missing their contribution. 3
Professor Madden Returns by Sir James and Lady Suzanne Broski Attendees at the annual meeting in Des Moines were treated to a thought provoking and insightful presentation by Dr. Thomas Madden, PhD, Professor of Medieval History, Director of the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at St. Louis University. Like his presentation in Sept. 2012, he demystified the history of the crusades and pulled back the veil of conventional popular history. In his Sept talk, he took us on a journey back to the beginning of the crusader kingdom and the emergence of the military orders with a focus on the Knights Templar. Before taking us on the journey of the Templar Knights, he grounded us, his students, in the view that society generally has for the Crusades and the history of the Catholic Church. The reality is much different than what the media presents. He said the history of the Catholic Church spanning more than two millennia is something to celebrate and not to fear. He continued to study the history of our Church is to see the hand of the Holy Spirit moving across the centuries. For each of us Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Professor Madden did cover our origins. We began as an order of canons, or cathedral clergy and religious instituted by Godfrey de Boullion. After the fall of Jerusalem, some of these knights later returned to Europe, retained their title. And so the Order flourished in the Holy Land and in Europe. Shortly after the canons were established, the practice of knighting Christian warriors began. He said that I am certain that it was an example of this Order (Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre) that led to the subsequent creation of the other military orders, in particular, the Knights Templar. What was particularly fascinating was Professor Madden s grasp of the people and events that created the Knights Templar and led to their end. More importantly, however, was his ability to lead us through the web of European politics, medieval banking, papal support and military conquests. He topped it off with current culture touching on Freemasons, popular novels, movies and even domestic terrorists. Memorable Moments to Treasure By Sir Larry Albright, KHS and Lady Kathleen Albright, LHS We found our pilgrimage to be powerful, emotional, spiritual, inspirational...and fun! It was the best trip we ever have taken! The pilgrimage made the events we ve heard about for our entire lives come alive and seem closer to our hearts than ever before. Walking in the footsteps of Jesus was amazing! These were our most memorable moments: 1. Sailing on the Sea of Galilee as the hymn Amazing Grace was playing in the background. 2. Waiting to make our solemn entry into the tomb of Jesus (the Holy Sepulchre) as Franciscan priests chanted some beautiful songs. 3. Celebrating Mass in the tomb of Jesus. 4. Praying, singing, listening to the Word of God, and celebrating the Eucharist in the places where Jesus was born, lived, preached, performed miracles, suffered, died, was buried, and rose from the dead. 5. Seeing and being with pilgrims from all over the world. Requiescant in Pace With respect and affection, we call the attention of our fellow Knights and Ladies to those members of the Northern Lieutenancy who have died recently. In accordance with the privileges of the Order, His Beatitude Fouad Twal and the Grand Prior, Archbishop Naumann, will provide individual Masses for each of these recently departed: Sir Edward G. Andrisevic, KC*HS Sir Charles J. Berkel, KC*HS (previously inactive) Lady Catherine C. Gallagher, LGCHS Sir William A. Geiger, M.D., KCHS Lady Joan T. Hautzinger, LC*HS Sir Quentin O. 5 Having just completed a wonderful pilgrimage to the Holy Land in January of 2012 with the Jeff Cavins Bible Study Group, one might ask what prompted Connie and I to commit to another Holy Land Pilgrimage so very soon on the heels of the first. What more is there to see? What more is there to learn? Perhaps it is as Thomas Wolfe so succinctly expressed it in You Can t Go Home Again : I have to see a thing a thousand times before I see it once. Indeed, there was much to see and learn as we visited each Holy Site and were able to put into context the many scripture passages with which we are so familiar. By placing ourselves in the unique situations of that time in history, by connecting us to the same road that Jesus walked, by listening for the sounds that emanated from the lone believer, as well as, from the crushing crowds of dissenters, we are now better able to visualize those particular biblical stories that have become so meaningful to us. And now we understand. Yes, each time we have been to the Holy Land we do see many of the same sites. We do hear many of the same teachings. The first time, it seems that so much is happening so quickly, that unless you are an accomplished note-taker, you can t remember where you ve just been as you go down the road to the next page on the itinerary. The next time around, the sites and the context are now more familiar, and things seem to slow down a bit and you are more apt to take it all in. Having been there before and having had the intervening passage of time for reflection, we are able to see it better. This time around, thirty-four Knights and Ladies of the Northern Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre were graced with Holy Mass each day, celebrated by Most Rev. Joseph Johnston, KC*HS, Bishop of Springfield-Cape Gieardeau. With his quiet, but forceful demeanor, and his very timely and thoughtprovoking commentaries, Bishop Johnston brought a 2013 Lieutenancy Pilgrimage By Sir Stephen F. Hardie, KCHS and Lady Connie J. Hardie, LCHS, Area Councilors, Eastern Iowa Bishop Johnston standing on the Mount of Olives and looking over the Kidron Valley to the Old City of Jerusalem Most Rev. James V. Johnston, KC*HS, blessing pilgrims at the River Jordan 5 degree of spirituality to our pilgrimage that many of us had not enjoyed elsewhere before. We were privileged and grateful to have the gift of his presence. As our Pilgrimage Guide and director of the Franciscan Monastery Pilgrimage Office in Washington, D.C., Father David Wathan, OFM, KHS has had the blessing of serving in the lands of the Bible for many years. His three years of service in Bethlehem helped him better understand the challenges that the Palestinian Christians face in living their faith in an environment which is predominantly Muslim. In Jerusalem, he has seen the plight of the local Christians who are a tiny minority in a city overwhelmingly Jewish. These broad based experiences have served him well in trying to paint an intelligible and balanced picture of the Holy Land to pilgrims such as ourselves. Although we may never reach that elusive thousands-time plateau for Holy Land Pilgrimages, we will be going back again because once, or twice, is not enough. Holy Land Pilgrims with the Latin Patriarch Inside the edicule of the Holy Sepulchre, Bishop Johnston celebrates Holy Mass in the Chapel of the Angel as all 34 EOHS pilgrims crowd around to hear the Liturgy of the Word. At 5:00 pm our EOHS Pilgrimage Group had the Church of All Nations (the Church of Agony at the Garden of Gesthemene at the foothills of Mount Zion) all to ourselves for Holy Hour Adoration, Benediction, and Confession as we venerated the Rock of Agony at which Jesus prayed and suffered the night before He died.
EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Northern Lieutenancy Squire Editors: Sir James Broski, KCHS Lady Suzanne Broski, LCHS 9299 S. Lark Sparrow Trail Highlands Ranch, CO PRESORTED FIRST-CLASS MAIL U.S. POSTAGE PAID ST.LOUIS, MO PERMIT # 4400 Fr. Dana Christensen, KHS, Ecclesiatical Master of Ceremonies Via Crucis Lenten Journey By Fr. Dana Christensen, KHS, Ecclesiatical Master of Ceremonies As members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, we have a particular connection with the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus that culminated in the Holy Sepulchre. It is that Sepulchre, and the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) that leads to it, that is the ultimate destination of our pilgrimages. One of the highlights of a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, is to walk in the footsteps of Jesus on the Via Crucis. Given our connection with the Holy Sepulchre, and the Via Crucis, it would be particularly fitting for us to make the praying of the Way of the Cross a part of our Lenten practices. The practice of making the Way of The Cross originated in the Holy Land as Pilgrims literally walked the Via Crucis. However, as Christianity spread throughout the world fewer and fewer people were able to travel to the Holy Land and make the Via Crucis. Because of the inability of many to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land the practice of erecting a miniature Via Crucis in churches became popular. This allowed those who could not make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land to make one in miniature in their own Church. For centuries there was a plenary indulgence granted to the making of the Via Crucis in Jerusalem, and eventually that same indulgence was extended to those who would make the Via Crucis in any Catholic Church. This indulgence still exists today. Any Catholic, who makes the Stations of the Cross in a Church by walking from station to station (or if it is a large group, one member of the group walking from station to station), and who fulfills the usual conditions, gains a plenary indulgence. I pray that this upcoming Lent would be particularly grace filled, and that you would make use of the Stations of the Cross to help you return in spirit to that original Via Crucis in Jerusalem, and there console Jesus as He endures His passion of love for us. 6
