FROM THE PASTOR: Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing encourage the faint hearted, help the weak, and be patient with all of them. 1 Thessalonians 5:11, 14b Once a farmer found an eagle's egg in an abandoned nest. He took it home and slipped it in amongst his chickens under a brooding hen. When the egg hatched the mother hen reared the eagle chick as if it were her own child. And so that eagle chick grew up thinking that he was a chicken. He pecked like a chicken, he scratched like a chicken, he even walked like a chicken. In time, he grew bigger and it became clear to the other birds that this chick was an eagle. They would swoop down and say, "You are an eagle, you are king of the birds. Come and fly with us." "I'm not an eagle, I'm a chicken," he'd tell them. "My mother's a chicken. I live like a chicken. I am a chicken. Now go away!" One day an owl swooped down. "Get on my back" he said, "I've got something to show you." Curious, the young eagle hopped onto the owl's back and the owl flew high into the sky. "Put me down. Put me down. I don't like it up here," the young eagle squawked. "You'll be fine," said the owl. "Trust me." Soaring higher and higher, the owl finally flipped himself over and the eagle fell, plummeting fast towards the ground. "I'm going to die," screeched the eagle. "Just open your wings," called the owl. The eagle opened his wings and was caught by the wind. Soon he was soaring above the farm and the chickens bellow. "You're right," cried the eagle. "I am an eagle. I can fly." This is a story we would sometimes tell at campfire back when I was a summer camp counsellor. It s a story I d forgotten about until recently. What brought it to mind was a devotion we did at our last church council meeting on the importance of encouraging one another. This eagle needed encouragement in a big way. He was stuck in a way of living that severely limited him achieving his potential. As long as he believed he was a chicken he would never live into the future that God had intended for him as an eagle. Life isn t easy and we all need to hear words of encouragement. Sometimes, like this young eagle, we need encouragement to get back on track. Other times the encouragement we need is much simpler: words of thanks, of kindness, of care to motivate us to carry on with the tasks at hand. I believe that one of our congregation s greatest gifts is the spirit of encouragement
that I see among us. Working with council there is always an atmosphere of cooperation and care for one another. I am also grateful to have been the recipient of many encouraging words from you. Encouraging one another doesn t take a huge effort but when we re continually working with the same people we can start to take things for granted. We can forget that being The Church and following Christ s way is hard work, and that we really need those words of encouragement from one another. And so, in the words of the apostle Paul, let me say, Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed you are doing encourage the faint hearted, help the weak, and be patient with all of them. (1 Thessalonians 5:11, 14b) May we continue to be a community that supports and encourages one another in the life of faith. God s peace, Pastor Laura SYMPATHY We extend our sympathy to the family of Marjorie Smith, 84, of Stratford and formerly of Bornholm who passed away at Stratford General Hospital with her family at her side on Wednesday, April 15th, THANK YOU I would like to thank everyone who made and donated pneumonia vests to be sent to the Canadian Lutheran World Relief. I will be picking up the box at the end of May if you have more to drop off. If anyone still has the "creative bug", I know that Shelterlink is in need of slippers. (especially men's slippers). If they are left in the narthex, I will see that the shelter gets them. Lisa Rapien

LENTEN SOUP & STUDY This photograph was taken during our final episode of the four-part CBC documentary series entitled "8th Fire", held at St Peters. The 8th Fire is a provocative, high-energy journey through Aboriginal country showing you why we need to fix Canada's 500 year-old relationship with Indigenous peoples; a relationship mired in colonialism, conflict and denial. Wayne Jarmuth WHAT IS PENTECOST? For Christians, Pentecost is a holiday on which we commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit on the early followers of Jesus. Before the events of the first Pentecost, which came a few weeks after Jesus death and resurrection, there were followers of Jesus, but no movement that could be meaningfully called the church. Thus, from an historical point of view, Pentecost is the day on which the church was started. This is also true from a spiritual perspective, since the Spirit brings the church into existence and enlivens it. Thus Pentecost is the church s birthday.
Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada It is so important for us maintain and protect places like Camps Edgewood, Lutherlyn and Mush-a-Mush. These are our three beautiful corners of nature far from all the hubbub of daily live, where families can go to commune with God in a joyful space, and our children can learn, on their own, that their faith is something to have fun with. Faith is not only about church on Sunday, or grace at dinner. It is about shouting those crazy songs at the campfire. It is about performing the stories we mostly only hear preached in formal language from the lectern. It is about celebrating God s love for us. Camp is a place where that celebration unfolds naturally and it is wonderful thing to watch. Wouldn t it be something if we could work harder to hold on to that joy in the real world of bills and disappointments and family squabbles? God sets us free by constantly giving us opportunities for new life. God wants us at the campfire, giggling, clapping our hands, and shouting out loud. Experience the gift of God s Backyard at one of our Eastern Synod Camps this summer. Camp Edgewood: Camp Lutherlyn: John Milloy former Ontario cabinet minister, member of provincial parliament for Kitchener Centre and senior adviser to former prime minister Jean Chrétien has accepted a position as assistant professor of public ethics and co-director of the Centre for Public Ethics at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary and a position as the inaugural practitioner-inresidence in Applied Political Science at Wilfrid Laurier University. CHURCH TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION IN CANADA St Matthews Anglican Church, Islington Wednesday May 6th, 7-9 pm Esther Wesley, Ojibway woman leads informative and moving blanket exercise and discussion. Wednesday May 13th, 7-9 pm Nancy Hurn, Anglican and Kim Arnold, Presbyterian National Archivists and Laura Hallman, a United Church archivist speak about the legacy of the Indigenous Residential Schools in Canada. Wednesday May 20th, 7-9 pm Bishop Mark MacDonald, National Indigenous Bishop speaks about the impact of the Doctrine of Discovery and the attempt at reconciliation by some churches and the First Nations, Inuit and Metis People.

Designated Giving Policy Keep in mind when donating to the church that in February 2013, St Peters Council adopted the following policy: Spending of funds is confined to council approved programs and purchases. Each gift designated toward an approved program will be used as designated with the understanding that when any given need has been met, or where projects cannot be carried out for any reason, designated gifts will be used where needed most. Stones of Reconciliation During the season of Advent in 2014 we constructed a cairn of stones on our altar to symbolise our congregation s commitment to reconciliation with the land, the waters and with Indigenous peoples around the world and here in Canada, across genders and generations. These stones have remained in our worship space, placed on the pulpit, to keep us mindful of this commitment. They will remain there until sometime in June when one of the stones will be sent to Ottawa to become part of a Cairn of Reconciliation that is being built to mark the end of Canada s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). About the TRC: The mandate of Canada s TRC has been to inform all Canadians about what happened in the Indian Residential Schools and to document the truth of survivors, families, communities and anyone personally affected by the Indian Residential School experience. The TRC will be releasing its final report June 2nd, For more information visit:
CHURCH COUNCIL NEWS We have received the final bill for the new carpet project from Larry s Flooring, for $14, This came in under the amount tendered/budgeted and the remaining funds will be applied to the upcoming brick repairs. We have been implementing some of Synod s recommendations from the Treasurer workshop held in November, including changes in the role and duties of the church treasurer. You may have noticed this also led to needing to upgrade security for the church office and records in accordance with the Privacy Act. The church has been busy the past two months and council wish to send out the following THANK-YOU notes: Thanks for the great turnout for the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on February 17th. We want to also thank all the people who prepared the food, the confirmation class, parents and other helpers. This was our first Faithlife function and we raised a total of $ to support Dan Walker and Youth Unlimited. Thanks to all who attended Shelterlink Sunday on March 8th held at the Brodhagen Community Centre. All enjoyed a delicious lunch following the service which was provided again by the Chamber of Commerce. We raised $ for this important cause. On March 22nd Deb McCracken- Nangereke joined us for worship, offering her thanks for our support and inspirational stories of people who have been helped by our donations. A chili lunch was provided by council and raised $ for Olive Branch. It was again a enjoyable meal and fellowship. Thanks to all who supported the mission project. March 28th was our Annual Spring Cleaning of the church. Thanks to all for your time helping. We ran out of time, so the kitchen and basement will need to be finished another time. A BIG thanks to Pastor Laura and all who participated in the Lenten studies by providing lunch. The documentary 8th Fire and education was great and very enlightening to all who attended.
UPCOMING EVENTS April 25th 9:00am Arbor Day to clean up the church yard ( May 2 Rain Date) June 7th Sunday School Picnic July 5th Family Paradise Campground service and BBQ hosted by our Outreach committee August 16th Cemetery Decoration Day, following the service we are planning a fundraiser BBQ for the St Peters cemetery. This will be our 2nd Faithlife function for this year. As discussed at the AGM the cemetery is in drastic need of financial support. Watch for more details for the event and please come out. Gwen Neeb Church Council Vice-Chairperson BEING THANKFUL A Rabbi said to a precocious little six year-old boy, 'So your mother says your prayers for you each night? That's very commendable. What does she say?' The little boy replied, 'Thank God he's in bed!' LAMP - BECOME INVOLVED LAMP is one of a very few organizations that ministers to people living in remote villages of northern Canada. Nearly 500 volunteer missionaries travel North to teach children about God's love through a summer VBS program designed just for them. Have you been praying about ministering to children, youth, and adults who are hungry to hear the Word of God in Canada? This past spring, one of LAMP's long-time volunteers got in touch with Cross the World, a faith based ministry that provides handcrafted wooden crosses free of charge. The volunteer received the wooden crosses and while in the community, the LAMP team after spending time in prayer with the Lord, set out, knocking on doors and offering the cross, saying, We would like to bless you with this cross, which opened up conversations with people we never imagined. No one turned us away and many asked for prayer." A person who received one of the crosses said, My husband died 3 weeks ago, and I am so lost. as she held the cross to her heart and said, Bless you for sharing." Visit the LAMP website for full stories:
