1 Service for the Lord s Day The Season of Advent PRAYER of CONFESSION First Sunday December 2, :30 A.M. *CONGREGATION STANDS AS ABLE LITURGICAL COLOR: WHITE WELCOME and INVITATION O Come, O Come, Emmanuel - arr., David Lantz First Reader: We are entering the season of Advent. During this holy season we await, with longing and eager expectation, that great and glorious day when Christ, the light of the world, comes among us. Second Reader: It will be a radiant day upon which Christ restores the world and sets it right with God. It will be a joyful and luminous day because God will completely fulfill all of God s promises. Yes, we yearn for that wonderful day of peace and salvation for humankind! First Reader: Advent is also a time of preparation. During this holy season we strive to make ourselves ready for the coming of Christ. It will be a day when, according to the prophet Isaiah, the nations of the earth shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. Second Reader: We make ourselves ready for the coming of Christ by ridding our minds of anxiety and our hearts of fear. We prepare for Christ by emptying our relationships of envy, malice and deceit. We focus only upon what is just, honest and kind. First Reader: Throughout this holy season we will light the candles of hope, peace, love and joy. With the lighting of each successive candle, we will increasingly recognize the growing light of Christ coming into the world. Let us begin, by lighting the candle of hope. (Light the Candle of Hope) Congregation: Light one candle to watch for Messiah: let the light banish darkness. He shall bring salvation to Israel, God fulfills the promise. Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates Leader: Hear the good news! Jesus Christ came into the world to save us sinners. He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, that we might become dead to sin, and alive to all that is good. I declare to you in the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. People: We are truly forgiven. Thanks to you, O God! *PASSING the PEACE *LIGHTING of the ADVENT CANDLES *HYMN Leader: We come before God not as despised sinners, but as beloved children. With the confidence of children of God, let us humbly confess our sin. (Unison) God of the future, you are coming in power to bring all nations under your benevolent rule. We confess that we have not expected your kingdom, for we live casual lives, ignoring your promised judgment. We accept lies as truth, use our neighbors, abuse the earth, and refuse to promote your justice and peace. In your mercy, forgive us. Grant us wisdom to welcome your way, and to seek those things that will endure when Christ comes to judge the world. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. ASSURANCE of PARDON The People of God Gather PRELUDE (and silent confession) No. 8 *GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
