U.S. Postage Winston-Salem, NC Permit # 168 Thursday after Pentecost The Purpose of the Church And they devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Acts 2:42 Many times, even those who are very involved in the church (this includes priests, Parish Council members, Sunday School teachers and others in church leadership) forget about the true purpose of the church. The verse above from Acts 2:42 mentions the main activities of the early church, activities that should form the purpose and the core of church life in every church community today. Those involved in the early church, we are told in Acts 2:42, had four purposes: Teaching/Learning about the faith, fellowship, breaking of the Bread (the Eucharist) and prayers. A fifth was soon added, which was the daily distribution, serving food to the poor and the widows (Acts 6:1). These were the purposes of the church, the anchors of community life in the early church. Churches that want to be successful today would do well to make these five activities the core of their ministry. Teaching/Learning Knowledge is power. There is no power for someone in something they have no knowledge of. For example, I do not know much about the periodic table in chemistry. So, when someone starts talking about the elements and their properties, I quickly tune out and move on. If our knowledge of Christianity is like my knowledge of chemistry, then we will quickly lose interest in the things of God. Teaching and learning about the faith is also not confined to Sunday School, or to children. We should strive to continually learn about our faith and we should see opportunities to teach others about the faith throughout our adult life. We must become lifelong students who at the same time are lifelong teachers. Fellowship A Christian does not live in isolation. Being a Christian is about being in communion with the Lord and with one another, following the two great commandment which are to love God and to love our neighbor. St. Paul tells us in Galatians 6:2 that we are to bear one another s burdens and this is done in the context of fellowship. Breaking of the Bread The central act of the church is the celebration of the Eucharist (Holy Communion). One can learn about the faith in a Bible study in a home. One can have fellowship with other Christians outside the church. The central act of the church community is the Eucharist because that is what is unique to the church community. It is the one thing that the church community does that cannot be done outside of the church community. Every church is, in reality a Eucharist assembly of Tampa, because this is where the Orthodox Christian faithful of Tampa gather to celebrate the Eucharist. Prayer the most basic function of the church is prayer. Prayer is done constantly. Individual members pray to the Lord. Members pray for one another. Gatherings open and close with prayer. The priest prays with and for his parishioners. Prayer is something that should be done daily by all Christians, multiple times per day. Daily distributions from the get-go, there was a sense that the church needed to minister to the poor, and to those outside of the church. Community outreach, both ministering to one s own church community and the community outside of the church, was important in the life of the early church. The church had a great desire to serve the poor, the widows, those afflicted in any way, so that no one would go hungry, no one would go without prayer, and no one would be excluded from fellowship. George Stabolitis attended to give an informative review of possible gym flooring that could be installed in the Pavilion for safer playing surfaces as our youth hold their basketball & volleyball practices. Pricing, warranties, & testimonials from the Charlotte community were all presented. Other information was also shared, including advice from current basketball & volleyball coaches who have concerns about the safety of practicing on the current concrete flooring. Consideration would be for us to rent space from other facilities to ensure safety. We plan to review this information after festival & summer travels. If this comes to parish consideration; we would hold a special General Assembly. Review of Kinnamon Road rental home tenants: 3412 will be vacating at the end of May & 3408 will be vacating at the end of June. We will discuss the possible sale of 3412 after the festival & summer travels. Jimmy explained the background of the real estate purchases & his advice to sell the house that does not have the new driveway on it. Maintenance report was given by George Bambalis on other homes. We discussed the cash flow from the rental properties on Keating Drive. Stan Carroll shared clean up plans as we prepare for Greek Festival. Convection ovens & new dishwasher have been installed. New drapes are being researched & will be installed after Festival. New traffic flow for Festival was discussed.

5 GREEK FESTIVAL 2018 WOW!! The Good Lord truly blessed us and many, many hands turned this exhausting event into a resounding success. A HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL! Our new Drive Thru, Online Ordering, our new driveways and the restructured Take Out area and new parking plan were extremely busy and very successful. Out customers commented on how much better the process was. The best sight is to see empty freezers and refrigerators! Many thanks to all the booth chairpersons who took on the responsibility and the huge burden! We are always looking for both men and women who want to step up into a more significant leadership role. Contact Fr. Demetri, or any of the Co-Chairpersons. Our thanks to the ladies for their hard work and preparation. This year, we had plenty of help but judging how the Baklava prep there are still many hands that can help making the burden less. Many thanks to Irene Kroustalis for once again chairing this huge undertaking. Many thanks to our men who helped us in such a meaningful way, to our fantastic dancers and all the teams from K-12th grade. Our sincere appreciation and congratulations to Chris Karahalios, John Kortesis, Sammy Gianopoulos and Pete Bobotsiares who Co-Chaired this mammoth event. Please turn in all keys, bills, presale tickets returns and receipts to the Church office. Thank you for working so well with each other. And if in the heat of the effort we have offended someone, in the spirit of the Christian love let us forgive, forget, and move on. As we close out the year, I reminisce on what all we ve accomplished as Ladies of Philoptochos. We kicked off our year with a friendly game of Speed Friending, learned how to make Prosforo while planning for successful Bake Sale, enjoyed some Margaritas and Meza during our Membership drive, shared special memories with holiday tea while celebrating Valentine s Day, and closed out the year with our End-of-the-Year Dinner Celebration. Although there was fun and fellowship to be had by many, nothing was as rewarding as being able to meet our financial obligations to the many charity organizations who depend on our support to make life a little better for so many in our community. Organizations such as Crisis Control, Meals-on-Wheels, Hospice, Battered Women s Shelter, Project Hope, SCAN, Salvation Army, Second Harvest Food Bank, Zoe for Life, H.O.P.E., WS/FC School Buddies Fund, Forsyth Jail & Prison Ministry, Center of Exceptional Children and W.S Back Pack Program are just a few of the many organizations we help out each year. This is only possible with the help of each and every one of you who devote your time and talents. Some an hour or two here and there, and some who commit hours that turn into days. Each of you are valued, and each of you are appreciated. Without you we couldn t be the successful organization that so many people have counted on. Our Sunday School students who were in Angel Choir did a wonderful job participating in the liturgy on Mother s Day. It was truly a special treat for us parents to hear our students participate in Sunday worship. We thank Mrs. Connie for all of her hard work in preparing them for this endeavor. We want to also thank all of the volunteers who worked tirelessly to help make our Greek Festival a success. Without volunteers, this event would not be possible. As summer approaches, we are winding down the school year with the final week of the Sunday School. The last day of class will be on June 3rd. We would like to thank the Sunday School teachers who help to teach and guide our children. We appreciate all of their dedication to this important ministry.
