This event was not a fundraiser. This was a gift to the community and a way for us to touch lives we may not reach in our regular activities. Many people were involved in making this event a success. 2 INSPIRE PAGE 2 Church name points to values, mission As your pastor, there are many wonderful aspects of Community United Methodist Church that I lift up in prayer each day: The staff, both unpaid and paid, at CUMC is a blessing to us all. They do so much behind the scenes to make sure that the ministry of Jesus Christ is active in all that we experience. The amazing volunteers that give so much of their time to be receptionists, greet at our doors, replace light bulbs, and on and on...words can t express enough gratitude for all that they do both inside and outside this church. Our facility that, despite a few days of extreme warmth, provides us with a good home to reach other people for Jesus Christ. All of God s children, from infancy to 100+, who share their hearts here. I praise God for these things and much, much more. But I want to share that one special, unique feature of our church for which I praise God is our name Community. The Rev. Kevin Shelton Community! That says it all, doesn t it? Our very name not only shares what we value as a people within the walls of this church, but also points us to our mission to make new followers of Jesus Christ outside of these walls. We are Community UMC called to be Community for our community! God led us to 3301 W. Broadway as our home. Our vision now is to reach out to our neighbors around us to share our love for God, our life with God s Word, and our hearts in service. We are called to be agents of Jesus-transformation in western Columbia and beyond. Join with me in August, as we consider how we can become more of who God created us to be...community! We will be looking at how we can: Be inwardly strong and outwardly focused. Integrate good deeds and good news in the life of our church. Value impact and influence in the community. Seek to be salt, light, and leaven in the community. See ourselves as the soul of our community. Our Lord has amazing challenges for us to engage! Let s open our hearts to God s plan, and become Community for community! Blessings in Jesus Christ, Kevin We are Community UMC called to be Community for our community! Prolific Lucado publishes volume on leading God-centered life It's Not About Me by Max Lucado It's all about Him. God wants us to reveal His glory. Everything and everyone exists to do so. As the author expands this theme, he quotes passages from a variety of Bibles, with annotation. We must change our me-centric thinking self-promotion, selfpreservation and self-centeredness and live a God-centered life. Beholding Him changes us and transforms us into God-centered believers. This small volume is an easy, fast read that will really make you think about your place in God's universe. Joy Underdown library volunteer

INSPIRE Tammy Shelton appointed Community UMC youth director The Children s Ministry Team would like to update Community on the good changes that have been made based on recommendations from the Healthy Church Initiative team. The goal is to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. All of these activities have been excellent ways of making disciples of our youngest members. Leaders have been working hard to make the Children's Ministry a vital, vibrant time for children. Since last semester, the children have met in the Music Wing to begin their Sunday school experience with an opening that includes music, Bible verses, a service project (collecting Ronald McDonald tabs), and an offertory. This has been a success and the children have learned (and memorized) many Christian prayers and songs, such as the Doxology and fun "kid" songs, that can stay with them throughout the week. In addition, On July 8, three applicants for the Community UMC part-time youth director position were interviewed by an expanded Staff Parish Relations Team (SPRT). It was the concensus of the SPRT that all three, though quite different, had unique skills which made them viable candidates. On July 10, the three applicants met with the Youth Leadership Team, The Adult Youth Leadership Team, and some other invited parents. After those sessions all applicants were ranked. There was a consensus that one individual was by far the most qualified and the most appropriate fit for Community. It is my pleasure to announce Tammy Shelton is our new youth director. Tammy began her position July 11. She has been the director of The Branch Young Adult Ministry since its beginning. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me, Jennifer Thomas, Kelly Wells, or Mike Sykuta. To contact Tammy Shelton, you can call her cell phone at (573) or her at tshelton@communityumc.net. Her onsite office hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m.-1 p.m., 3 p.m.-8 p.m. Children s Ministry Team offers update on changes, plans they are beginning to learn each other beyond their age groups. We have been working toward age -specific targets to focus promoting- Christian growth within our population of children. This will continue into the fall and will be taught in conjunction with Sunday school curriculum. This summer we have had more than ever attending summer Sunday school. One of the team members, Jeanette Williams, has been sending "We Missed You" cards for children who miss a week. This is met with excitement by the children and appreciation by the parents that Sunday school is such a caring group. Tammy Shelton PAGE 3 The VBS program leaders thought outside the box and partnered with Fairview United Methodist Church this year and it was well received and well attended. Meetings have already been in session to plan VBS at our "house" next summer. There is a new excitement with the partnership of Fairview. The KICK program was a huge success, and the children showed their witness abilities through a program that was excellent. Several children who did not attend last year expressed interest in signing up for the upcoming school year. The team would like to thank all who have volunteered or will be helping in the fall. We would love for you to be a part of the fastest growing ministry in the church. Volunteers are a vital part of our enthusiasm and growth. For questions or to volunteer, contact Mary Beth Benton or Jeanette Williams. Jennifer Rice Children s Ministry Team

INSPIRE PAGE 4 Welcome Community s newest family member Jackie Lordo s first experience at Community was touring the Global Market. Inspired by the mindset of volunteerism, she came to a few worship services. She decided to join to become a part of the group of wonderful Christian people she met, and was welcomed into membership on May 29. Jackie plans to attend graduate school at the University of Missouri full-time in the fall and to continue to work. In her spare time, she loves music, reading, cooking, baking, and playing outside with her 3-year-old son, Malachi. Despite her busy schedule, she would like to involve herself in the ministries of Community as much as possible. If you have not already met Jackie, seek her out and meet her in person. Kids in Christ s Kingdom to return Aug. 21 KICK (Kids in Christ s Kingdom) is returning! Come join the fun. The fall session of KICK will begin Aug. 21 and continue through Dec. 11. Children in kindergarten through 5 th grade are invited to meet each Sunday afternoon from 4-5:30 for music, Bible stories, and a variety of activities. All children will participate in learning new songs and take part in a musical, Christmas Hang-up s, which will be presented on the evening of Dec. 11. Kids and parents, put these dates on your calendar and plan to participate. We had a great time last spring. We need lots of parent, grandparent, and other adult participation to help tell stories, play games with us, prepare costumes, build stage props, and much more. For more information, contact Jennifer Rice at tomnjen@mchsi.com or Mary Beth Benton Children s Ministry Team leader We are all on a spiritual quest for meaning and purpose. Your journey can take many paths: Exploring new possibilities, reigniting spiritual passions or discovering new levels to relate with God and each other. What will you EXPLORE? Where will you CONNECT? How will you GROW? When will you UNLEASH your passion? Join The Quest Quest groups launching fall 2011

INSPIRE PAGE 5 Scoop about the youth group Youth 2011 Community youth had an amazing 5 -day experience at the National United Methodist Youth gathering in July at Purdue University. Seven students and four adults attended this event packed with worship, concerts, speakers, workshops and small group experiences. Joining over 3,300 junior and senior high students and their adult sponsors, our group grew closer to God and to each other. Thanks to Mary Beth Benton, who organized our travel and who set up our transportation with the St. James UMC youth group out of Kansas City. Another person who made this event possible was Jennifer Thomas, who coordinated many details to make this trip possible. Our group will be sharing these Youth 2011 experiences soon with our church family. Annual youth float trip, camp out set for Aug All middle school, junior high and senior high students are invited to the annual youth float trip Aug The group will camp out, float the Gasconade River and spend time getting to know each other. Incoming sixth graders are welcome to attend. Friends are always welcome. You can find the required permission forms on the youth bulletin board in the Community Cafe'. Cost for this event is $25. Deadline to sign up is Aug.14. You can sign up on the youth bulletin board or online Youth group seeks donations of guitars Do you have any old, forgotten guitars or bass guitars sitting in your closet or basement? The youth group is looking for instruments for the youth praise team. Just bring your donation to the church office and help jump start some young musical talents. Conact Youth Director to donate scholarships The lack of money can sometimes keep students from participating in spiritual and connecting activities. If you would like to help make these opportunities available to youth in our church family, please contact Tammy Shelton, Director of Youth Ministries, for ways that you may help.

INSPIRE Worship features new sermon series, new music Worship in August begins with a special service of Holy Communion with congregational responses set to music in The Faith We Sing songbooks. All are welcome to arrive 15 minutes early for worship on Aug to learn the responses. These Holy Communion servicescoincide with the beginning of the sermon series Community for Community. The Rev. Kevin Shelton will explore the joy of being an externally focused church by getting more involved in the surrounding community, creating authentic relationships with people, and taking the local mission effort to new levels of compassionate service. The musical theme of this 4-week series is God of This City, made popular by Christian singer and worship leader, Chris Tomlin. August will be Servant Recognition Weekend. All who serve the church, community and world will be lifted up in worship and celebrated with receptions on Saturday night and Sunday morning. The Community choirs will be back in action on the 21 st and the Sunday School children will be worshipping through song at the 11 a.m. service. PAGE 6 The last two weekends in August feature new music from modern hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty, Come, People of the Risen King and By Faith. There are three opportunities to worship the Lord each week: Saturdays at 5 p.m., and Sundays at 8:30 and 11 a.m. Worship with The Branch student-led ministry on Tuesday evenings beginning again soon. Check the website for times and locations. Julie Gibson worship leader The Branch expresses appreciation for families who opened homes for summer worship services What a blessing this summer has been with our young adult ministry. The Branch is continuing to reach out to our returning young adults who have grown up at Community United Methodist Church and who are looking for ways to connect to each other and to God as they mature in their faith. Over this past summer, we have held worship services in different Community family home churches. Thanks go out to the following people for opening their homes for worship: Sid and Mary Jean Leeper, Ed and Fran Lambeth, Robert and Esther Schnase, Kevin and Tammy Shelton, Chuck and Birgit Wiedmeyer, Mike and Sherri Helm, Tom and Beth Sweeney and Stan and Mary Beth Benton. Community families continue to make connections with our young adults and are changing lives. Tammy Shelton director of The Branch ministry Branch plans connections for semester opening The fall semester is quickly approaching. The Branch Ministry has plans for reaching young adults in our church and around Columbia. Our group will reach out to freshman, providing dorm move-in help, free pizza at Shakespeare's and worship in the basement of Community UMC. Here are some ways you can connect with these young adults: sharing time over coffee, leading a small group, attending away events, providing meals before young adult worship and attending Branch worship sessions. For more information, contact Tammy Shelton, director of The Branch Ministry at tshelton2112@gmail.com or see us on facebook page at the branch columbia.

INSPIRE Members may place orders for Community cups PAGE 7 The Community Hospitality Ministry Team is planning to reorder the Community cups that are given to our first time guests and that are used in the Community Café. The team would like the congregation to have the opportunity to order cups, and individuals or groups may purchase as many cups as they want to use or to give as gifts. The cost is $8 per cup. Please contact Beth Sweeney by phone or to place your order at bsweeney_1964@yahoo.com, phone: Please place orders for cups by Aug. 15. Services, serving to commemorate 9/11 anniversary What if on one day every church, every person, every United Methodist in Missouri went into the mission field at the same time? On Sept. 11 Columbia-area United Methodist churches are going to do just that SERVE! This is an opportunity to move outside the walls of our churches and to offer ourselves for mission and service. The weekend of Sept will mark the 10-year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, and we will have special services at our Saturday 5 p.m. and Sunday 8:30 a.m. services. After the 8:30 service on Sunday, we will gather for a meal to strengthen us and then go into the community to serve. Details will be coming soon concerning those service projects. We would like some more volunteer leaders to help coordinate our effort at Community. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful Jesusevent, please contact Rick Ellsworth at rcellsworth@mchsi.com. Please keep this special opportunity to serve our community in cooperation with our sister churches in Columbia in your prayers. Jesus Christ will be known and felt in our participation in SERVE2011. 8 Community United Methodist Church 3301 West Broadway Columbia, MO Fax Deadline for submissions for the September issue is Monday, August 22. Our mission is to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I met a stranger in the night, Whose lamp had ceased to shine; I paused and let him light His lamp from mine. A tempest sprang up later on, And shook the world about, And when the wind was gone, My lamp was out. But back came to me the stranger His lamp was glowing fine; He held the precious flame And lighted mine. - Lon Woodrum Never hesitate to help someone, because you never know when you ll need that person to help you!
