3 Trinity Lutheran Newsletter Volume Issue 3 March 2013 P a s t o r C a r r s M e s s a g e A Message from the Pastor... INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Pastor Carr s Message 1 Pastor Voorman s Message 2 Memorials Easter Breakfast Membership Matters Upcoming Events Financial Report 3 Lenten Service Schedule 4 Pastor Kleimola s Article 2 3 All of us are aware that we live in a negative time. Frustration, despair, anguish and pain are all around us. Bad News, not the Good News, fills our newspapers, our TV programs, yes, even our conversations. As many look at the cup of daily life they see it as half-empty, not half-full. The world s negatives can infect all of us and affect the way we live -- even in our lives as Christians. As our Wednesday Bible Study Group has been studying the book of Acts it comes to mind that if anyone had a right to be discouraged about his life it was the apostle, St. Paul. He wrote about being hard-pressed on every side, perplexed, persecuted, struck down -- but was able to add to each of these, but not crushed, but not in despair, but not abandoned, but not destroyed. (2 Corinthians 4:8-9) Paul lived out the truth that he expressed in Romans 5: We rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope -- and hope does not disappoint us because God has poured out his love into our hearts. Paul knew who he was and whose he was. Sustained by hope in Christ, he served so victoriously that he became the greatest Christian missionary. When the negatives of life brush against us and leave us sad, depressed and unproductive -- that s the time to remember that we share our Lord s victory over death and hell. It s time to renew our hope, to celebrate again the fact that the Victor has called us to represent him to our world. We probably will never be Pauls, but in Christ we too may know who we are and whose we are. Our lives do count! His Spirit will utilize our service and the gifts, tithes and offerings we bring to underwrite the service of others! Throughout March we remember the Passion of our Christ in the Holy Season of Lent. Then, we celebrate Holy Week and The Festival of the Resurrection on the final day of March. Why not use this month to take up the opportunities presented to grow deeper in your Christian faith and communion with your fellow believers at Trinity. It is also an awesome time to be an ambassador of the hope that you have within you sharing his love in our greater community with acts of mercy. Why not invite others to follow the Master, Jesus and attend service with you! Your fellow servant of Him, Pastor Carr

4 A Message from Pastor Voorman Page 2 Going into the month of March we find ourselves smack dab in the middle of Lent. Ash Wednesday is only a few short weeks in the past and Easter is still a few long weeks in the future. So here we are, joined together in our somber season of repentance, of sorrow, of pondering the passion of Christ. We have been invited together into this celebration of Lent. Remember these words we heard together in church on Ash Wednesday Dear People of God: The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord's passion and resurrection and it became the custom of the ancient church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting. This season of Lent provided a time in which converts to the faith were prepared for Holy Baptism. It was also a time when those who, because of notorious sins, had been separated from the body of the faithful were reconciled by penitence and forgiveness, and restored to the fellowship of the church. Thereby, the whole congregation was put in mind of the message of pardon and absolution set forth in the Gospel of our Savior, and of the need which all Christians continually have to renew their faith. I invite you, therefore, in the name of the church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer and self-denial; and by the reading and meditating on God's Holy Word. And, to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our mortal nature, let us now make confession before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. Lent is a season about Christ crucified for you! Everything else that we may do or say is supposed to be a helpful tool used to point back to Christ on the cross. The place where He died for our sins! During Lent many people have taken up the tradition of, giving things up. If you regularly follow this tradition I urge you this year to stay focused. So often we begin to do things for the sake of doing them. Remember the reason for this tradition. Remember that invitation to the observance of a holy Lent. In giving something up we are not pretending to be like Jesus. Rather every time we crave that chocolate, soda pop, television show or something else we remember what Christ has done for us. Don t use those times of craving to boast in your spiritual accomplishment but instead use that time for self-examination, repentance, prayer, self-denial, and reading God s Word. Lent is not about you doing something for God. Lent is about what God did for you! It s about the central pillar of our faith; Christ crucified and buried for your sins. Lent is not about you going back to the cross and nailing Jesus to the wood with your sins. Lent is about Jesus bringing His life giving blood and forgiveness to you here and now! Lent is about the Baptismal life that Christ freely gives to His people. It s about dying to sin and rising again to new life. It s about our unity with the suffering Savior through Baptism. It s about His forgiveness, His blood, His suffering. My plea and prayer for you during this month of March is that you would stay focused on Christ. Use your traditions, or start new ones, that anchor you in the forgiveness of Jesus. Come and join us throughout Lent on Wednesday evenings for our Midweek series, Wounded. Together we gather as wounded sinners, invited into a Holy Lent, invited to reflect on our wounds and our sins but more than that, invited to reflect on the wounds Christ endured to save us! LSB 420 (stanza 6) Thou hast suffered great affliction, And hast borne is patiently, Even death by crucifixion, Fully to atone for me; Thou didst choose to be tormented That my doom should be prevented. Thousand, thousand thanks shall be, Dearest Jesus, unto Thee. Peace in that Suffering Savior, Pastor Voorman Upcoming Youth and Young Adult Events >Sunday, March 3 rd, all those youth attending the Youth Gathering in Texas will have a meeting after services in the Luther Room. If you are interested in "hosting" one of the three pastors at your job on any Monday from June to August, please contact the church office or find signup sheets at the welcome centers. The pastors would love to know what you do, where you do it, and who you do it with for your job. 6 CHECK OUT OUR WEBSITE AT No matter how many seasons we ve seen, we all look for the telltale signs of spring, and we re never disappointed. Every year, without our asking, the miracle of new life bursts forth around us. That dried-up bush you thought was dead is spouting green tufts right above the soil. The yellow grass peeking through the snow contains patches of green. And who isn t thrilled with the first sight of those crocuses bravely pushing through the surface of the ground. Every spring, the miracle unfolds. What a perfect time for Easter when we celebrate another miracle of new life. Jesus, Who once was dead, is alive! And we, too, who were dead in (our) transgressions and sins, are now alive in Christ. As glad as we are when spring arrives, how much more grateful we must be for this new life that Christ, by His death and resurrection, has won for us. How eager we must be to share this good news with those who haven t heard. How generous we will want to be in sharing our resources so that the real message of New Life in Christ can be spread at home and in faraway places. May God s blessings continue to come to you as you use all the gifts He has given you in faithful stewardship. 7 (Image Source: Parenting and Technology Part 3 Three ways to be an Example Online March 2013 Our children learn from us. Everything we do they mimic. To the credit of their creator, they are created to copy what they see. This works for their benefit as well as their detriment. I would suggest that by Sharing Jesus, Talking like Jesus, and Seeking Jesus in our lives in both cyberspace and meatspace, we will set examples for our children we would want them to mimic. Sharing Jesus is the best way to overcome the darkness of our world. In Romans 12:21, Paul encourages us: "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." There are easy ways that we can Share Jesus with our online presence. If you are on a social network, consider sharing posts from your church's page, devotional groups, and other God-pleasing sources. Your friend list will benefit from the Word. Another easy way to share the love of Jesus online would be to include your favorite scripture verse in the signature of your . Most accounts and applications allow you to set up automatic signatures. In everything remember that God's word is powerful and effective (Hebrews 4:12). Don't be ashamed of the Gospel (Romans 1:16), but be empowered by it to link others to Jesus. Talking Like Jesus is another way that we can overcome evil with good. In fact, not talking like Jesus could cause the sharing of Jesus to give a disservice to God's name. With technology it is important to watch what we say. In the cyber-world there are no take-backs. Screen shots and massive databases have records of everything that occurs online. Eyes that we forget are watching will be hurt and harmed by the words and pictures we share and post. Consider everything you say online and how it will sound to the most innocent and sensitive of ears. If there is some offense to be had in your words or actions, keep them to yourself. Remember that in baptism you are baptized into Christ (Galatians 3:27) and that Christ lives in you, the hope of glory for yourself and for those around you (Colossians 1:27). Remember, if it was possible to talk like Jesus all the time we wouldn't need Him. In times of error and harm that we cause to others it becomes more important to seek Jesus. Seeking Jesus is important to do when we fail. Proverbs 28:13 tells us that whoever conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy. The sad truth is that we are always failing. Isaiah 64:6 is clear even our best deeds are like filthy rags. 1 John 1:9 is clear that if we say we are without sin we are deceiving ourselves. Seeking Jesus because of what we see, say and do online is is important because Jesus is where we find healing for the hurts we experience and inflict. Seeking Jesus is also important to build us up as we walk in the Light. There are many resources available online for devotional use. Trinity's website has our Pastor's sermons posted weekly for our meditation and growth. BibleGateway.com is a great site for getting into the word and the YouVersion Bible application is a great app for your personal devices. The best resources you can find online are your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. As we walk together we should not shy away from sharing, being and seeking Jesus together. As parents we are examples for our children. We fail to realize how strongly our children emulate us. Children will grow up talking, eating, working, studying and worshiping the way they see their parents doing it. The flip side though is that children will also complain, bicker, blame, gossip, and sin like their parents. Please realize the importance of being Christlike for your children. But more importantly remember the need for Christ's forgiveness when you fail. His love is for you. Found In Christ, Pastor K.

8 Symbols of Easter Mary Anne Hibbard One of the greatest symbols of Easter is the empty cross. Christ died on the cross - but He didn't remain hanging on the cross. He gave up His life and was taken down from the cross, lain in the tomb - from which He arose three days later. The empty cross is a proof of Jesus' victory over sin on our behalf. The color white is a symbol for Easter because it symbolizes purity and holiness. Christ died, not for His sins - He had none - He died for our sins - in His holiness He paid our debt. (Purple is the color associated with Lent - the preparatory season before Easter. Purple is symbolic of both royalty - Jesus, the King - and of penitence - our own sorrow and desire to turn from our sin that caused Jesus to die for us.) (These symbols I explored further in a previous Witness article ) Bulb flowers are a symbol of Easter. The bulb appears dead. It is often dried out, with no visible signs of life until buried in the earth...and then it sends forth green shoots and finally a lovely flower. (Which also brings to mind another color symbol - green for new life.) The Easter lily is a special favorite symbol of Easter - the white reminding us of Christ's holiness and purity and the golden stamen (or crown) reminding us that He is truly the King of the universe. However all spring bulb flowers can be symbolic of Easter - new life where none was evident or visible. (Personally I love the colorful spring flowers - bravely sending forth their shoots into the still cold spring weather and adorning the reawakening physical world with bright and cheerful color.) The lamb reminds us, paradoxically, of both Jesus, the Good Shepherd - who cares for us, but also as Jesus as the sacrificial lamb, whose blood paid for our sins. The lamb also recalls the (unblemished, "perfect") lamb's blood that the Israelites in Egypt used to paint the doorposts to save their first born children (and animals) from the angel of death. Jesus is identified as the "Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." The sacrificial lamb is known as the "paschal lamb," thus in some countries and traditions, Easter is known as the "Paschal Feast." The egg is a symbol of new life - and like bulb flowers - it is new life from that which appears dead. An egg doesn't appear to have life - but it has the potential of life! The colors of decorated eggs can remind us of various parts of the Easter. Red Easter eggs, traditional in the Eastern Orthodox churches and in Germany, are symbolic of the Jesus' blood shed for us. They were often exchanged on Easter (and enjoyed in Easter meals). In some countries, including Greece, eggs are dyed green and exchanged on Maundy Thursday - the green symbolizing new life in Christ. Easter parades, which still continue in some traditions, originated from early Christian times. New Christians, who were baptized on Easter Eve, wore white robes throughout Easter week (the week following Easter). Those already baptized often wore new clothes symbolizing their continuing new life in Christ. The butterfly is a wonderful symbol of the new life made possible by Easter. The caterpillar representing the pedantic and limited human life - then the chrysalis, a time of appearing dead, but absolutely not dead - then the new life emerges as a beautiful butterfly! There are some rather obscure symbols of Easter. The whale is one of these - reminding of the three days Jonah spent in the belly of the big fish (actually not a whale) - foreshadowing Christ's three days in the tomb. The pelican is another obscure symbol. Pelican's were believed to wound themselves and feed their blood to their young for life-sustaining nourishment.

9 Symbols, in and of themselves, are not as important as the lessons they may teach us - or remind us - the absolute truth of new life given us in Christ. From Romans 6: 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. 7 For one who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. 10 For the death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God. 11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. ================================================== Holy Week Worship Palm Sunday - March 24 8:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m. Musical Note: 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Trinity Children will process in and sing at 10:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary and then will process to worship in the gym at 10:45 a.m. processing in again and singing an additional song for Palm Sunday Maundy Thursday March 28 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. celebrating Holy Communion, concludes with the stripping of the altar Good Friday Tenebrae March 29 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Easter Sunday March 31 Holy Communion celebrated at all worship times Sunday 6:15 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m. - Sanctuary 10:45 a.m. gym Breakfast served in the cafeteria from 7:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m.

10 News from Mr. Landskroener, Principal Why should I send my child to Trinity? There are many reasons to send your children to Trinity Lutheran School. I could list many ways that your child and your family benefit from attending our school but this month I asked a family to share how Trinity prepared their son and is preparing their daughter for high school. I hope their story will inspire you to consider a Lutheran Education at Trinity for your children. Once you know about Trinity you will want your student at Trinity. Dear Trinity Friends, We d like to share a few thoughts regarding Trinity School with you. When we moved to the Toledo area 5+ years ago, we searched for a church with a school for our two youngest children and were blessed to find Trinity. Luke entered Trinity as a 5 th grader and graduated 8 th grade in Catie entered Trinity as a 1 st grader and continues in 6 th grade today. From the first day of school, both of our children were welcomed into their classes and were treated by classmates and staff with the love, care, and respect you want for your children and that you expect from a Christian institution. We were, and continue to be, at peace knowing our children were receiving a high quality education, in a safe environment, where teachers and administrators reinforce the Christian principles we teach our children at home. Both of our children have excelled academically while at Trinity and Luke transitioned to high school being very well prepared. As a freshman, Luke s Honors Biology class was required to do a science fair project. We were surprised to learn that Luke s classmates had never done one before whereas Luke had participated in four prior science fairs at Trinity. Luke was at a similar level or ahead of his fellow high school classmates in all fields of study. Trinity has a strong Art and Music program whereas, unfortunately, some schools are eliminating these subjects from their curriculum. As such, Luke was exposed to band where he learned to read music and play the trumpet, which he continues to play to this day. Also, due to the size of the school, all students at Trinity can participate in sports, which has helped our children grow beyond the classroom and further develop in competitive, team based efforts. Trinity Church & School has been a tremendous blessing to our family. Trinity School provides a quality, well-rounded Christian education for a very reasonable price. If you have children that don t attend Trinity we suggest you strongly consider enrolling them in Trinity. Likewise, if you have family or friends who are searching for a better learning environment for their children, please take the time to suggest they take a look at Trinity. Trinity provides a great service to our community. We encourage all members of Trinity to make full use of, and help make known what Trinity has to offer, so we can fully utilize the many gifts God has given our congregation to do His work.

11 Mr. Travis Gruelke accepts call to be our district education executive Mr. Gordon Stuckert, our current District Executive for education, is retiring at the end of this school year and the district has called Mr. Travis Gruelke from Redeemer Christian School in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and he has accepted. Please keep Gordon and Travis in your prayers as they make this transition. Trinity Summer Program Trinity is hoping to offer a summer Extended Care Program this year. Information will be coming home to see what kind of interest we have in house before we advertise in the community. If you have suggestions you would like to see for the program, please share them with me. March Events The end of the 2 nd trimester is Friday, March 1 st. Our school year is now 2/3 complete. Our students continue to excel academically and use their gifts and talents both in and out of the classroom. On Thursday, March 14 th, the middle school choir from St. John Lutheran School in Fraser, Michigan will stop at Trinity on their tour and perform for our middle school students. D.A.R.E. Graduation will be Thursday, March 21, at 10:30am. Our 5 th grade students have been preparing to share why they promise to be drug and alcohol free. Track season begins this month. Terri Marter will again be our coach. Track season is proof that Spring is on the way. Enrollment update Enrollment is off to great start for the school year. Our Open House on February 21 st was well attended. We do have room for more students and just want to remind you that we have a generous scholarship program to make a Lutheran Education at Trinity a reality.

Knowing this we can LIGHTEN UP! Our presenter, Diana Schnack, is a graduate of Valparaiso University and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Columbus. She was the humorist/interrupter at the 2010 LWML Ohio District Convention and has been a speaker/presenter many times in LWML societies and zones across the Ohio District.

15 LUTHERAN WOMEN S MISSIONARY LEAGUE MITES and MISSIONS The Lutheran Women s Missionary League is in need of your Prayers and Mites. The goal to support national mission grants for the biennium needs to be met by March 31 st. If not enough Mites are received by that date, the mission grants selected at the 2011 convention in Peoria, Illinois may not be fully in this biennium. The mission grants of the national and Ohio District Lutheran Women s Missionary League (LWML) have been featured in the past newsletters. We hope that this information has helped you to have a better understanding as to where your Mites are going. Please continue to pray for God s blessings on all the grants and support them by placing your coins, dollars or a check made payable to Trinity LWML into an envelope and bring them to church by March 17th so that your Mites may be applied to the LWML Mission Goal. Consider an extra gift in thankfulness for blessings received. February Mites totaled $ God bless you for your support. Envelopes for your Mites and additional Mite Boxes can be found near the Welcome Centers. Below is information on one of the LWML national grants: GOSPEL OUTREACH THROUGH OPEN ARMS CHILD CARE Many congregations are finding that a Christ-centered childcare ministry can bring them into personal contact with a larger number of unchurched families in their communities. The Open Arms Institute was established in 1995 and incorporated in 1999, through the department of North America Missions, Board for Mission Services of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS). The Open Arms Institute offers guidance and resources to LCMS districts and congregations to expand outreach through childcare programs. Making childcare an integral part of a congregation s mission has helped to reverse the net loss of membership in the synod. Families come to know the Lord Jesus through these ministries and usually these families represent younger generations. Planting new churches is a very costly effort. Planting churches with childcare ministry is a workable alternative because the program can be self-supporting and help with the cost of the facility. This LWML grant will help to establish new LCMS Word and Sacrament ministries in growing communities. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = LWML TOLEDO ZONE RETREAT LIGHTEN UP! will be held Saturday, March 16, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran, 4560 Glendale Avenue, Toledo. Registration begins at 9:00 a.m., opening devotions at 9:30 a.m., closing at 2:30 p.m. Retreat presenter, Diana Schnack, is a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Columbus, Ohio and a graduate of Valparaiso University. She has been a presenter/speaker at many events of LWML societies, zones and districts. She has served in a variety of LWML positions at the local, zone and district levels. Because Christ took our burden upon himself, we can Lighten UP! and let our faith shine radiantly to everyone. So join us as Diana gives us ways to Lighten UP! and be prepared to smile and enjoy God-inspired, God-given lessons. Registration forms are available on the bulletin board in the narthex or contact Lillian at The registration fee of $15.00 includes lunch and the deadline is March 11 th.
