3 April 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Easter Page Three NOTES FROM FATHER BOB THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER At some point in your life, you will have met someone truly special. Perhaps it was a famous celebrity from film or television. Maybe it was a sportsman or woman renowned for his/her world records. It could even have been an old man who, in his seventies, jumped from a plane (with a parachute), bungee-jumped from a bridge in New Zealand and learned to scuba-dive in the Bahamas. Perhaps it was somebody a little more ordinary, a next-door neighbor or friend, who made a huge impression upon you. This special person seemed to be so alive, generous and loving, that you found his/her company exciting and liberating. We try to make the moment last as long as possible when these meetings occur. We find out as much as we can, in case the chance to speak to them never comes again. Then we are anxious to get back home or back to work to tell everybody all about it: You ll never believe who I met this morning when I took the dog out! Usually people will be interested for a short time, but if we go on a little too long about this marvelous encounter, our friends and family will soon begin to get bored. They may eventually try to change the subject altogether. It is important for us to understand how others can be so disinterested in our remarkable encounter. Why don t you get it? This is amazing and you don t seem too interested at all! If only you could have been with me when I met so-and-so, you would be excited too! The disciples are huddled in the upper room and have been listening to the two disciples who met Jesus on the road to Emmaus. The lives of these two disciples were turned upside down by their meeting with the Risen Lord and they wanted the other disciples to hear all about it. What were the feelings in the room at that moment? Perhaps some were jealous that it wasn t they who had met Jesus on the way to Emmaus. Maybe a few were still sitting in stunned disbelief an this be true? There might even have been a few who believed that what the disciples had told them was true, but were angry because they didn t know how they could meet Jesus. Immediately after the telling of their story, Jesus himself appears in the room. He interrupts all their solitary musings and the tender emotions of that moment and wakes everybody up with his presence. Some are still slow to understand what is going on Is it a ghost? How do I get out of here? But Jesus reassures them, It is I. And he gives them his peace. He is the same Master they had known, but he is changed and glorified. The telling of the Emmaus story had set the scene and prepared the hearts of the disciples. However, the telling of their story could not substitute for the other disciples own meeting with the Risen Lord. They no longer need to speak about the peace of the Risen Lord, for all the disciples now experience it for themselves. Each of us is called to share the Good News of the Risen Lord. A vital part of that sharing is the telling of our own experiences of God and God s saving love for us. Yet, it is vital for us to remember that, powerful though our sharing may be, it can never truly bring someone else to faith. Only a personal meeting an encounter with the Risen Lord can truly bring the peace that the world cannot bring. Although we are bearers of Good News, it is the Lord himself who will bring to fruition the Word we share. As servants of the Word, we share the Good News freely, but we do not assume responsibility for everything that happens afterwards. Perhaps someone may be resistant at first to the knowledge of God s love for them; perhaps they may even be hostile because of some past hurt. Whatever the situation, we simply share our trust in Jesus and pray that, in the fullness of time, the person may come to a personal knowledge of God for himself or herself. The Emmaus disciples told their story and prepared the other disciples for the appearing of the Risen Lord. Let us be bold and generous in sharing the Good News we have received. Let us also be gentle, trusting that the Lord s desire for these people to draw near to him is much stronger and more influential than our meager words. Easter Blessings, Father Bob Pastor
4 Page Four Third Sunday of Easter April 22, 2012 Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, APRIL 22, 2012 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER; EARTH DAY -Back to the Earth redit for today s Earth Day holiday goes to Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who believed this occasion, first observed in 1970, would open the eyes of U.S. politicians to popular support for laws and policies to protect the environment. In his Earth Magna arta, John Mconnell, the founder of the Earth Day movement, put it this way: All individuals and institutions have a mutual responsibility to act as trustees of Earth, seeking the choices in ecology, economics, and ethics that will eliminate pollution, poverty, and violence, foster peaceful progress, awaken the wonder of life, and realize the best potential for the future of the human adventure. In this Easter season of renewed life, how can you help make the adventure of God s beloved creation better for all? TODAY S READINGS: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19; John 2:1-5a; Luke 24:35-48 (47) You are witnesses of these things. MONDAY, APRIL 23 FEAST OF GEORGE, MARTYR - A saint for all seasons The long history of religion also contains a long history of division, but occasionally there is a glimmer of hope for mutual understanding sometimes in the most unexpected places. Saint George is best known for legends of dragon-slaying, but in death he has accomplished an even greater feat, providing a common point of reverence across nearly all the Western faith traditions. He is highly celebrated as a saint in both the Western and Eastern hristian churches, but the Orthodox shrine of St. George at Beith Jala a small town in the Bethlehem region of the West Bank is also well attended by Muslims and Jews. It s nice to know that there is one spot in the world, at least, where the dragon of hostile religious division has been slain. TODAY S READINGS: Acts 6:8-15; John 6:22-29 (273) This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent. TUESDAY, APRIL 24 FEAST OF FIDELIS OF SIGMARINGEN, PRIEST, MARTYR Faithfulness knows no bounds Mark Rey, a 16th-century Swiss lawyer, dealt with many of the same things lawyers do today: interpreting and applying legal principles, advocating for those in need, and dealing with corruption and injustice. Though his profession was not religious in nature, he went about it in a truly gospel way, tending to people who were oppressed, financially strapped, and most vulnerable. He became a apuchin Franciscan priest, taking the name Fidelis, which means faithful, and continued this passion throughout his life. Ten years after joining the apuchins, Fidelis was killed by soldiers for refusing to renounce his beliefs. What seemingly nonreligious experiences in your life have led you to give all for your faith? TODAY S READINGS: Acts 7:51-8:1a; John 6:30-35 (274) You received the law as transmitted by angels. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 25 FEAST OF MARK, EVANGELIST - On your Marks While it s unlikely the Mark of the gospel of that name is the same as the Mark mentioned in several other places in the New Testament, the latter followed the same path the gospel describes. He worked with Saint Paul but later deserted Paul on one of the apostle s mission journeys, provoking a sharp disagreement and a parting of the ways. Yet he clearly played a role as a fellow-worker of Paul (Philemon 24). The Gospel of Mark asks believers to follow Jesus example of servant love whatever the misunderstanding or conflict it may cost, because hrist will be with you the whole way. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Peter 5:5b-14; Mark 16:15-20 (555) Go into the whole world and proclaim the gospel to every creature. THURSDAY, APRIL 26 EASTER WEEKDAY - hrist s hand has a far reach One of the oddest post-resurrection stories tells of the apostle Philip sprinting up to a carriage and explaining scripture to the passenger who is so moved that he accepts baptism on the spot! Is it too much of a stretch to imagine the homeless, jobless person who walks up to your car asking for help while you re sitting at a traffic light to be an apostle of good news? The 50 days of Eastertime allow the Paschal Mystery to penetrate your most ordinary experiences and see in them the hand of God breaking in. That doesn t necessarily mean you should give cash to every person who asks, but even the most mundane encounter might be a reminder that the Resurrection of the Lord breaks down conventional barriers between human beings. TODAY S READINGS: Acts 8:26-40; John 6:44-51 (276) The Spirit said to Philip, Go and join up with that chariot. FRIDAY, APRIL 27 EASTER WEEKDAY; ARBOR DAY - Plant a tree of life When J. Sterling Morton moved to Nebraska in 1854, one of the first things he and his wife did was plant their property with trees, bushes, and flowers. On the prairie, trees were important: They acted as windbreaks, helped prevent soil erosion, could be used for firewood and construction, and provided shade. Morton was a newspaper editor and later a Nebraska Territory official, and he used both those platforms to promote tree-planting, culminating in a national holiday for the proper planting of trees: Arbor Day. Each generation, Morton said, takes the earth as trustees. What God has given, each generation is to protect and pass on. Get involved in your local Arbor Day activities or find some other ways to conserve God s great gift of creation. TODAY S READINGS: Acts 9:1-20; John 6:52-59 (277) The living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father. SATURDAY, APRIL 28 FEAST OF PETER MARY HANEL, PRIEST, MARTYR Go and do the same In 1831 St. Peter Mary hanel joined the Society of Mary and soon realized his dream of becoming a missionary. With several other Marists, he traveled to Western Oceania and began healing and educating the local people. Many chose to be baptized based on Peter s witness: He loves. He does what he teaches. He forgives his enemies. His teaching is good, said one of his converts in a simple tribute that captures the essence of the hristian ethic. Love, teach well, forgive your enemies. TODAY S READINGS: Acts 9:31-42; John 6: (278) The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and life by TrueQuest ommunications, L.L.. 5 April 22, 2012 Third Sunday of Easter Page Five New Health and Human Services Directives and hristian Moral Principles Part II: The Updated Revisions and the Opposition to the New Regulations Fr. Tim Fiala It was originally intended that this week s column would focus on the religious freedom and the right of conscience. Between the time of writing the first article and this one, new regulations regarding the manner in which contraception, sterilization and abortion would be funded were made known and published by the White House. Since last week s article was about the history of the issue, it seems logical to conclude this line of thought completely by including the changes and the moral opposition to those changes now and continue later with reflections on religious liberty and the right of conscience in the weeks ahead. Update on the Administration s New Plan for Religious Institutions On February 10, 2012 the Administration through the White House Press Office issued new directivities in response to the opposition of the hurch to pay for services and procedures which are against her core teachings. Here is a list of the new regulations taken directly from the statement issued by the White House Office of the Press Secretary. 1. The new regulation will require insurance companies to cover contraception if the religious organization chooses not to. Under the policy: Religious organizations will not have to provide contraceptive coverage or refer their employees to organizations that provide contraception. Religious organizations will not be required to subsidize the cost of contraception. ontraception coverage will be offered to women by their employers insurance companies directly, with no role for religious employers who oppose contraception. Insurance companies will be required to provide contraception coverage to these women free of charge. The Moral Objections to the New Regulations Formal and Material ooperation Unfortunately, the new regulation proposed by the Administration does little if anything to restore the rights of religious freedom and conscience. Most importantly the new regulation places the onus of payment of services on the insurance carrier instead of the religious institution directly. What is not taken into consideration is that some dioceses are self-insured. What this entails is the diocese administers, funds and pays out claims for their employees instead of using the services of an outside insurance company. Since the regulation indicates the insurer will pay for these pills and other devices, a diocese that chooses to be self-insured would be formally cooperating with an evil. Formal cooperation is a condition in which the cooperator directly affects the execution of an evil act. For example, a diocese paying into their own self-insurance plans would be directly subsidizing contraception, sterilization and abortion under the new regulations. The diocese would be forced under the new law to be a formal cooperator with the evil. There can be no justification whatsoever to be a formal cooperator in an evil act. Even if a diocese chooses to use an independent insurance carrier for their coverage, the new regulations force the diocese to cooperate with evil by paying premiums to a company that will pay for the services the hurch deems as immoral. In this case, under the new regulations, the hurch or diocese would be forced to be what is known as a material ; cooperator in evil. A material cooperator with evil is a condition in which one is not directly cooperating with evil but nevertheless by their actions (or payments) supports the evil and without their help the evil could possibly not be executed. Referring back to our original analogy of the bank heist will help illustrate the differences. Obviously, a person who robs the bank is committing an evil act but also the individual who is driving the getaway car is complicit in the evil act as well. The driver of the car does not enter the bank and physically steal the money but his assistance in the robbery and his wish to be part of the criminal act makes him a formal cooperator in the bank robbery. Now, let s say that neither of these individuals own the getaway car but rather borrow it from a friend. The friend knows the two criminals want to rob a bank but does not want to go with them; instead, he gives them his car and does not object to the robbery. In this case, the owner of the automobile is a material cooperator because without his car, the bank robbery could not happen. In the latest regulation proposed by the White House, religious organizations will be forced under law to be either a formal or material cooperator in what they believe are evil acts. As can be seen, the new regulations do not substantially change the very nature of the hurch s original opposition to the mandate. By placing emphasis on the insurer to supply the services does not solve the problem of cooperation with evil whether or not the diocese is self-insured or pays premiums to an outside insurance carrier. Next week will be devoted to the study of the crucial elements of the debate: religious liberty and the right of conscience.

8 Page Eight Third Sunday of Easter April 22, 2012 MY LIFE'S JOURNEY OF FAITH STUART HEYES, DEAON ANDIDATE ANDIDAY YEAR ONE, FALL 2009 MAY 2010 ONT. lasses this year were split into three courses of evening classes, each of 10 weeks duration. The first was hurch History by Dr. Aaron anty, (SXU) 2000 years covered in 20 hours! The greatest lesson after all our trials and tribulations we are still the ONE, HOLY, ATHOLI and APOSTOLI hurch, founded by hrist The People of God. The study of Vatican II was of great interest to me, given I was a disinterested observer of these changes (being in my late teens) and, oh, did I mention, Anglican, at the time. The next course was on the atechism of the atholic hurch lead by our recent Associate Pastor, Fr. harles Watkins. Now for those of you familiar with the Baltimore atechism this is certainly not that. What it is, though, is a comprehensive explanation (900 pages) of our Faith in four parts: The Profession of Faith:, The elebration of the hristian Mystery The Paschal Mystery and Seven Sacraments; Life In hrist Living your life in and with God, The Ten ommandments, hristian Prayer, The final ten-week course, The Old Testament, was lead by Sr. Marianne Race, SJ, who resides at the Sisters of the ongregation of St. Joseph in La Grange Park. Now I must declare, until this class I had never really connected the great stories, the timelines, nor the chronology of Adam to the House of King David and our Lord. Sr. Marianne brought it all into focus and while I m certain I was not her most promising student she did give me sufficient knowledge to make sense of the Old Testament structure and appreciative of its wonderment and critical importance to our faith. Internship: Throughout the year, we were required to interview heads of the many ministries within our parish reporting on organization, mission, importance to the parish, the people served, and how we as potential deacons might help Tests of a different kind: During the year we were saddened by the sudden death of Bob Ostrowski, one of we three south-siders on February 25, 2010, very shortly after we had all met for one of our monthly reflection sessions. One of the north-side candidates had lost his wife to cancer during aspirancy, and my dear friend and classmate, Bob Montelongo s wife (St. Bruno s) lost a child very late in her pregnancy. By end of the year, we were 10 candidates, and by the start of Yr 2, we would 9. ST.
