3 FROM FATHER MICHAEL... Holy Day of Obligation: All Saints Day & US This past Thursday, November 1, our Church celebrated the Feast of All Saints Day, when the Catholic Church acknowledges her known saints, those individuals declared by the Church (through canonization), to be known to live with God in His Kingdom. But as hope-filled people of faith, we the saints-in-the-pews are on a journey to become members of the Communion of Saints, that is, we are all working to become citizens of heaven one day. This Feast is also a time for the hope that all our loved ones our parents and spouses, children, grandparents and family and friends who have already died are also saints in the Kingdom of heaven. As people of hope faith we trust that they are unknown saints of God. That is, after all, the purpose of our hope-filled journey of faith! So during this Feast, which should be celebrated more than just once a year but by way of living out our faith-filled lives each day, let us pray for and to our deceased loved ones that they are guiding us and praying for us here on earth and that one day we too shall join them in the Kingdom as full citizens of God s unending love. November 2 nd, All Souls Day: Our Duty & Our Hope During the month of November you will see before our altar a bowl filled with All Souls Day Envelopes, complete with the names of our deceased family members and friends whom we are asked to pray for unceasingly. We remember the faithfully departed and as Catholics are called to continue our ancient tradition of praying for the faithfully departed. Even those of us who are good people and are filled with faith, may have some stain of sin or broken relationship which affects our relationship with God. We all need reconciliation with God even the holiest of people and benefit from God s powerful mercy. If at death we are not in, what the Church calls a state of grace, we can receive the help of our brother and sister Catholics who pray for our souls and for our entrance into heaven on the Day of Judgment. This is an ancient Catholic tradition. It is something that parishes and families did all the time. Unfortunately, we don t hear a great deal about Purgatory these days. Our world and our culture leans more towards it s all okay or don t worry, be happy philosophies. But Jesus spoke to the need to be in Right Relationship with those around us and especially with God the Father. Another example of God s great love for us is that we are called to continue to pray for those who have already died. To intercede for His grace to be upon them and welcome them into His Kingdom. Let us continue this Catholic tradition, passing it on to our parish community and our families and children even if selfishly ensuring that there will be practicing Catholics behind us and remembering us in the years to come. Eternal Life! For the entire month of November our deceased loved ones will be remembered at every Mass and in the daily breviary prayers of Father Michael. NPM Dan Schutte Concert was a Great Success! Just a brief note of thanks and congratulations to the Hartford National Pastoral Musicians (NPM) and to Susan Zybert, their president, for organizing a wonderful evening of reflection and sacred music by well-known composer, Dan Schutte. Last Friday s event was a great success both in turnout and in content. Dan Schutte gave great reflections on living the Christian life and followed them up with wonderful prayers his music sung in congregational style here at Saint Catherine of Siena Parish. I was very impressed and proud. I want to thank Susan Zybert for bringing us this opportunity, which was much appreciated by all who attended and participated, and to the NPM organization for sponsoring this. Also, a word of thanks and deep appreciation to our parish s choir members who organized a wonderful reception immediately following the concert and reflection. Our guests were quiet impressed. Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Today s readings, particularly the Gospel of Mark, remind us of the importance of knowing our faith. I mean this to say that we are called not just to know our faith but to understand it so that we can put it into action from the heart. That takes understanding. If you went to Catholic school when religious sisters ran them and taught the classes this might bring back memories to you and hopefully good ones. For me I recall a duality of feelings about Catholic school, being at the same time fearful of the sisters because they had standards that were to be followed but also comfortable because you realized their teaching style and their demands were meant to Continued on page 7 3

7 Fr. Michael continued bring you not only closer to God but so that you also would do well in school. I remember being called on in class and having to stand up, close your book and give (recite) the answer whether it was math class or the Crusades. In today s gospel, a scribe ask Jesus which is the greatest of the Commandments. He answers, probably from memory of being taught by Mary, the Shema Yisreal: Hear, O Israel! The Lord our God is Lord alone! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. This is the ancient prayer of morning and evening prayer in the Jewish faith. It would have been recalled from memory and committed to mind, body and soul. In other words, it would have been a livedfaith-experience. We are called to know and understand our faith and to bring it to life in the same manner: in right relationship with each other and with God. Then and only then will hear the words of everlasting life: You are not far from the Kingdom of God. Little Sisters of the Poor SAVE THE DATE: BAKING SPIRITS BRIGHT!" for Little Sisters of the Poor: Once again, the Little Sisters have asked if we would be willing to bake, specifically cookies*, for their annual Christmas Bazaar in Enfield on Saturday, November 17th to benefit Saint Joseph's Residence.
