Bingo 6:00 PM...Carpenter Hall Sometimes the spirit of God is revealed in the most unlikely people, like Eldad and Medad in the first reading. This should not surprise us as the King of Kings was born in a manger to humble parents. God lives in all people, especially those that the world deems to have little value. The second reading highlights an issue that affects laborers who are least respected - unjust wages. James reminds the rich that God will not forget their mistreatment of their workers. Catholic Social Teaching tells us that all workers deserve a living wage. Sweatshop conditions, wages that are insufficient to support a family, lack of affordable health care, etc. are inconsistent with our social teaching. As we contemplate God s presence in the most unlikely people, think about all those with whom you interact especially those whom you may consider inferior in some way. Who among them do you find it most difficult to imagine God s presence in? Why? Ask God to reveal to you the Divine presence in this person in a most recognizable way. Today we welcome Audrey Rose Pinkowski and initiate her into the Mystery of Christ as lived here in our St. Luke Community. We congratulate her parents: Jason & Michelle; and Godparents, Rachel Blick and Dan Holland. Please remember in prayer Robert Zarling who has died, brother of Mike (Kathy) Zarling and uncle of Paul, of St. Luke, and his family. We also remember Mary Birmingham who has died, sister of Meggie Teasdale, of St. Luke, and her family. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord. R./And let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. R./ Amen. Adult Formation-All Are WELCOME-Invite your friends October 7 9:15-10:15: Dr. Julie Helmrich will be speaking on "Opioid Use." What we ll learn ~ Facts about local usage that will surprise you How opioids differ from other street drugs and why that matters Why/how opioid deaths happen What single thing every caring adult can do to help with this problem. 3 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018

5 Dear People of St. Luke, In recent years Fall has become the time for Community Leadership concerns From the Pastor within our St. Luke Household of Faith: nominating and discerning members for Pastoral Council and selecting Parish Trustees. Indeed, we are the People of God the Body of Christ in this time and place. We are tremendously gifted. By name we are called; from water we are sent to become the eyes and hands of Christ. [ 2001, Tom Kendzia. Published by OCP Publications. All rights reserved.] Good, great things have happened here for years and good, great things are happening now and will continue to happen within and beyond our St. Luke Community in the years ahead. In the Spirit of Vatican Council II, we, God s People in Christ, here at St. Luke with many dreams and visions - seek guidance from leadership within our parish. We need nominations of people who are willing to serve on our Pastoral Council. The Discernment Process has the whole parish enter into the consultation through nominations and prayer. Together as a community of believers we pray that women and men will be open to the call to serve through leadership. We identify and encourage parishioners to personally enter into a process of reflection and prayer. Those who are nominated continue the process of discernment personally and in partnership with Pastoral Council members. This process is truly one of prayerful discernment not merely an election of members. It is the well-being and Gospel mission of our St. Luke Community which is first and foremost in our hearts and minds as we discern the membership of our Pastoral Council. PASTORAL COUNCIL NOMINATIONS AND DISCERNMENT As Pastoral Council Nomination Forms are made available we reflect on our call to serve. We ask: What knowledge and skills must I have to serve on Pastoral Council? Do I have the ability and willingness to collaborate? Council members are seekers who understand that Church is broader than one group or parish. They seek justice and are able to work effectively with diverse individuals and groups for agendae of peace. They lead with patience. Do I have a deep love for St. Luke Parish and our mission? Council members are believers who celebrate with the community in worship and link liturgy with life. They welcome all who come to celebrate, share their own faith stories, and desire to know more deeply what it means to be a Eucharistic People the Body of Christ. They lead with joy. Do I have a willingness to grow in holiness? Council members are spiritual leaders who model Christian living and learn from their mistakes. Their vision is formed through prayer and reflection and they believe the Holy Spirit to be at work in their own lives and that of the parish. They lead with faith. Do I have a desire to serve? Council members are servant leaders who offer their gifts to the community not from a sense of control, but from a sense of shared responsibility. With their Pastor, they seek the will of God for the parish with open minds and hearts and share the responsibility of making known the Gospel. They lead and witness with humility. Do I have a broad vision? Council members are change agents who while having respect for the unique mission of the parish in this time and place are also willing to challenge the status quo and affirm or initiate change. In their planning, modeling, experiment and taking risks they lead with courage. Am I a continuous learner? As good listeners council members are able to hear the deep longings of people; facilitate conversation around difficult issues; follow-up awareness with action; reconcile differences; alleviate fears and offer comfort as together we live into our Baptism. In this they lead with respect. Do I have a sense of stewardship? Council members empower others by helping create and sustain an environment that brings out the best in all parish community resources human, financial and material. They lead with wisdom. In what areas of ministry have I served? How would I describe the mission of our St. Luke Parish Community? What leadership qualities do I think our parish needs most right now? Why, should I be nominated or nominate myself? Am I willing to make a three-year commitment? How do others in my household feel about me serving on Pastoral Council? Do I meet all of the following requirements: Registered member of St. Luke Parish? Baptized (Fully Initiated) practicing Catholic? Over 18 years of age? Weekly participant in parish worship life especially Eucharist. Willing to participate in orientation session and in the prayerful discernment process? Pastoral Council Nominations Forms will be available at all Masses for Sundays, through October 14th. Discernment for Pastoral Council is scheduled for November. Deadline for Pastoral Council Nominations is Mon., October 15, Fr. Augustine 5 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time September 30, 2018
