1 NEW LABYRINTH ST. PATRICK S ICON RALLY SUNDAY Rally Sunday On September 10 th our Rally Sunday picnic followed the 10:30 service, keeping the St. Patrick's tradicon that marks the beginning of our Sunday School programs. As in the past, a feast with barbecue and range of dishes and dessert provided by parishioners were enough to feed all our parishioners and even some was lee over Jennifer Shubert and Mark Fowler planned a fun Cme with games and accvices for all ages.!1

2 Each of the Outreach ministries set up in the Sanctuary to allow parishioners a chance to learn about each of them. We found out about the purpose and goals of each ministry, who each ministry supports, and what the volunteers for each ministry do. Many people volunteered or donated on the spot to help their fellow parishioners with these ministries. It was a great opportunity to spend some Cme with the Outreach leaders and fellow volunteers. Many people found something that does fit into their schedule, discovered something they are passionate about, got to know fellow parishioners bener, and discovered how to make a difference in our own community and the world. Thereby helping St. Patrick's to spread its outreaching arms beyond the walls of our building. We would love to see more people personally involved with their Cme, money and talents to expand our Outreach Ministries. Officer Dave commissioned Rev. Sally Brower and many of our children to Serve and Protect during Rally Sunday while the St. Patrick s Youth entertained the children with face paint, hula-hoops and bubbles! Farewell to Mother Cynthia+ September 3rd was Mother Cynthia s last Sunday as Interim Rector at St. Patrick's. We thanked her for being with us during this period of discernment by providing a surprise recepcon following the 10:30 service. Mother Cynthia+ gave us a moving sermon including a hymn sung with her outstanding voice. The Rev. Sally Brower+, our AssisCng Rector will lead us through a new transicon phase for St. Patrick s uncl we get our new Rector.!2

3 HOMe Hope of Mooresville (HOMe) is renovacng a home that will provide temporary housing for women and children in our area who are homeless. This project is a few years in the making and is now gemng close to fruicon. In the past, The FiEh Street Ministry in Statesville would take care of Mooresville clients, but that will soon change. Bonnie BaNalia has been working with St. Patrick's Outreach Ministry and is a constant source of informacon, support and energy. As soon as the CerCficate of Occupancy has been issued, our comminee will be able to enter the home without an escort. We hope that will take place within a few weeks. With your generous donacons, St. Patrick's has purchased most of the items needed for our adopted "Yellow Room." There are a few items that we will purchase aeer we have been given permission to enter the building on our own. The "Yellow Room" is bright and cheerful and we hope to decorate so that each resident will feel safe, warm and welcomed. We also hope to have enough funding aeer purchases to provide the HOMe project with $1,000 for services for the upcoming year. <Jacque Touchton> Time of Renewal at St. Patrick s A variety of new programs for spirituality development have been added to our regular weekly schedule. Please join and we will grow together. Bible Studies on Sundays Youth Pilgrimage 2017 Please join Rick Krumel for a study of MaNhew, Mark and Luke's gospels to include the use of "Social-Science Commentary" as a means of bener understanding first century society into which the inical seeds of ChrisCanity were sown. This class will meet every Sunday morning from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. in the Library. Wednesday Evening Adult Educa?on Offering MeditaCon Rev. Sally Brower+ joins every week to give some guidance to beginners and share a meditacon with parccipants starcng from 5:30pm. AEer this, at 6:30 p.m, a potluck dinner will be shared. Come on Wednesday evenings bringing something to share in a potluck supper. Stay for night prayers and Eucharist at 7:00 p.m. AEer Eucharist, Sacred Circles provide a safe, welcoming process that insures that all voices are heard and all members are equal. ParCcipants learn to speak and listen in a deeper, more heargelt way. Each person has an opportunity to speak without interrupcon, and be heard without judgment or commentary. Guided quescons invite the sharing of stories and experience. Silence is acceptable and parccipants may offer silence as their response. This process is used in the Living School as a way to develop compassion and empathy for others. The Rev. Sally Brower+ will lead our Sacred Circles. ContemplaCon & MeditaCon and Sharing a Meal!3

4 SEP 28, 2017 Youth Pilgrimage 2017 Eight high school youth and two chaperones (Mark Fowler and Colleen Ramsey) journeyed to Washington D.C. and New York City to "Find God and the Light in the Dark Times. They visited the new Museum of African American Culture, the Holocaust Museum, and toured the Capitol and the White House. Then they traveled to New York City where they visited Ellis Island and the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. They saw man s inhumanity to his fellow man but also stories of faith and personal courage that shed light on dark nights of war, slavery and terrorism. ANending were Reese Karnatz, Nicole Pehan, Collin Flannery, KaCe Shubert, Alexa Chaney, Ashley Pehan, Bob Missert and Aidan Fox. <Mark Fowler> Icon of St. Patrick, Our Patron Saint St. Patrick Icon Preview & Progress 1) At this point, details such as the white line around the halo, St. Patrick s name in vermilion, other third highlights and floats on the robes, scroll, face, hands, and hair are finished. However, the final, final white highlights of the linle parallel lines on important areas and the white next to the irises of the eyes have not been done. The two photos are the icon as it appears at this point, and a close-up. Please remember that without the ojivsky, it looks good but not lively.!4

5 SEP 28, ) You can nocce small parallel lines in certain areas for emphasis and indicacng where the inner energy emanates from St. Patrick, such as near his eyes, his beard, his hand held in blessing, and on the scroll. This is called ojivsky and it means to enliven. It indicates the presence of God. Also, great emphasis is given to the beard near his mouth because he spoke God s words. It is possible to tell that the icon is finished because of the white strokes next to the irises of the eyes. The pure whiteness represents knowledge of God, and it is the last thing to be done. However, there is redempcon: the possibility of further detailing and correccons if necessary before the icon rests for a month before the chrismacon/oiling. We have found our way on our spiritual journey by remaining diligent, following the path, and relying on God. 3) The next step was to write the inscripcon on the back. Here it is. 4) This photo, which was taken before the oil was applied, shows how the St. Patrick icon was chrismated or oiled. This represents our deepening relaconship with God. The table was set with a white tablecloth and three white candles. AEer thankful prayers for complecon of the icon, Formby s Tung Oil was gently puddled/painted on the egg tempera surface but not the gold. When the first coat was dry, a second coat was applied. In a few days a third coat may be applied if needed. The Tung Oil soaks into the many layers of egg tempera, bringing out the depth of at least twelve layers of color, sealing and providing a proteccve surface. When completely dry, the icon will be professionally photographed in preparacon for giclee prints. < Rev. Sally Brower> New Labyrinth Completed by Matthew Colvin MaNhew Colvin has beaucfully paved the St. Patrick s labyrinth for his Eagle Scout project. He has made it much more accessible and usable for all, especially those who are disabled and need to use a walker or wheelchair. In doing so, he honors his late Nana with whom he would have liked to walk the labyrinth in her laner days but the former gravel surface was not stable enough. MaNhew has anended St. Patrick's since 2012 when he moved to Lake Norman from Winston-Salem. He joined BSA Troop 171 in 2013 and then started planning his Eagle project. The project, completed this summer, comprised a total of 497 hours between planning, fund raising and execucon; a massive amount of hard work by Mathew, support from his family especially Tondja his Mom, Scout Leaders, Scouts and other helpers and friends from near and far. With Cmely help he overcame many hurdles including an accident with the forklie, successive hour summer workdays, and raising the $20,000 needed to support the project. Our thanks to MaNhew and all those who contributed Cme, effort and funding, including Tondja s parents, Ann Graham McCurdy and Edmund Joel Woods estate that provided the matching funds that made the project possible. <Bob Smith>!5

6 Baptism How sweet to be called by God by name! Dariann Alexandria was bapczed on August 13 and became God s child. Welcome, Dariann! To: St. Patrick s People I want to thank you for your continuing assistance and your support in helping me to attend college. College is a goal I have worked hard for. Your support has been a blessing for me. Thank you so much. Love Fahima Rev. Sally+ Joins Youth Group in Empress Dress & Crown Rev. Sally Brower joined the 4 th -8 th grade Sunday school class on September 17 th. She shared the story of Esther in first person. Sally+ told the story of a young Jewish girl who was selected to marry the King. Esther was told by her Uncle not to tell the King who she really was and that she was Jewish. The King s advisor did not like the Jewish people because they would not worship the King. Esther had great courage and came up with a plan to save the Jewish people in her palace. Esther s story is told in the Bible because it is the reason for the Jewish Holiday Purim. The kids loved learning about Esther and relacng her courage to modern Cmes. We have a strong group of courageous young people living in our world. How interescng and especially when your pastor is dressed and talks as Esther! It was a really fun! Hmmm, we can think what other costume Sally+ may need next Cme.! <Georgia Reuter> In Our Church Library St. Patrick s Library holds a select colleccon of religious books generously donated. Books can be borrowed by signing the library check-out sheet. The library is open during regular church office hours. Books can be donated in thanksgiving, or in memory of someone. 7 My Faith, My Life: A Teen s Guide to the Episcopal Church - by Jenifer Gamber Read along with our High School youth as they prepare for ConfirmaCon when Bishop Anne Hodges-Copple visits St. Patrick s on Sunday, December 17th. Mark Fowler and Mason Reuter are guiding the older teens as they take this important step of reaffirming their faith and membership in the Episcopal Church. Your Faith, Your Life: An InvitaCon to the Episcopal Church, also by Jenifer Gamber, is wrinen for adults. (A separate confirmacon program will be held for adults at a later date.) At Home in the World: A Rule of Life for the Rest of Us - by Margaret Guenther Rev. Sally Brower recently announced the new Wednesday evening spiritual offerings will include Night Prayers and Holy Eucharist for those whose Rule of Life includes twice weekly communion. This Cme of renewal in our church is a wonderful opportunity to prayerfully consider creacng a personal Rule of Life, guiding us closer to God and in community with one another.!7
