Where we have failed, God has triumphed. Our Sin is forgiven and this is the Good News, that we are no longer slaves to our former selves, but have been freed up to be the people of God. PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we humbly thank you for your goodness to us and to all that you have made. We praise you for your creation, for keeping us and all things in your care, and for all the blessings of life. Above all we bless you for your immeasurable love in redeeming the world by our Lord Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies that with thankful hearts we praise you, not only with our lips but in our lives, by giving ourselves to your service and by living in your gifts to holiness and righteousness all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all worship and praise, now and forever. Some who witness Jesus' work are seized with confusion and fear, but the man who was healed is commissioned to give testimony of God's mercy and power. 26 Then [Jesus and his disciples] arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me" 29 for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) 30 Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. 31 They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. (continued on next page) 3

4 32 Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you. So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him. MEDITATION - SONG: We Are Christians We are Christians, we stand together, Lord, won t you come and be with us? CONFESSION OF FAITH (all): Behold, the heavens, the earth and all that is in it, belong to the Lord our God. Yet the Creator of the universe has chosen to love and care for us. Through Jesus Christ, the Son of God, we know God s love and forgiveness. Jesus showed us how to walk in the way of love. He emptied himself as a servant and became obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, God highly exalted him and raised him up, that at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. As servants of Christ, we live each day by the power of the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us in faith, calls us to be witnesses, and gives us peace. We trust God to give us courage, strength and guidance for our lives each day. Courage to touch others with the healing hands of Christ. Strength to care for the hungry, the stranger, the lonely, and the outcast. Guidance to reach out in loving ways to those around us. We place our lives, our future, and our all into God s hands. These neighbors have known the man for some time, witnessing his agonies and the power of the forces that control him. Perhaps they have hoped for an eventual solution to his dangerous condition, for the peace of mind of all involved. The reaction of the townsfolk to the man s deliverance from his bondage is not relief or awe or exultation; they are afraid. In fact, they are so frightened by the account of the man s healing that they ask Jesus to leave their region. The terror of Jesus power is too much for them, and his mastery of evil forces bewilders them. What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? (v. 7). The demons are terrified too. Strangely enough, in this story Jesus responds to the pleading of the demons, compounding the townspeople s confusion over just whose side he s on. We sometimes find ourselves in terror, uncertain what uncomfortable surprises lie in wait for us. Can we trust this God who speaks in mystery, this Christ whose closest friends must take up a cross? Do we dare ask of Jesus, What have you to do with me? and do we dare accept the answer? This Jesus, thank God, is a savior. He is the kind of savior who calms storms, heals diseases, and overcomes death. He is the kind of savior who forgives sins, praises the humble, and draws neglected women and men into the center of their communities. He is the kind of savior who shows mercy even to demons. What have you to do with me? Today God repeats the mysterious answer to this question as we experience the bread and wine and the assembled body of Christ.
