C) We come in different ways, walking in our own styles, at our own speeds. But we come to join the journey. L) Come, walk into the truth of who you are and who God is. Walk the way with Jesus into real life, as he listens and learns, tells and teaches, as he laughs and cries, as he lives and dies. Come, walk with the God who is the way, the Truth, the Life. 2 CONFESSION OF SIN L) The story of Christ s passion and death holds up a mirror to our own weakness and sin. We come together as adults and children who have messed up and turned away from God; we struggle with loving our neighbors and even ourselves. Together we confess our sins. C) O God, we want to be your faithful followers, but just like your first disciples, we fall away or fall asleep. We deny you or betray you or abandon you. We are afraid of what your cross means for our lives. Have mercy and forgive us. Open our ears and hearts and minds to hear your story in a new way and receive your grace and forgiveness again. Amen WORDS OF FORGIVENESS L) Hear the Good News! God has given us everything we need, including each other. God has forgiven each one of us and calls us to take our parts in the story of God s love and care. C) Christ calls us to join the journey and enables us to begin again and again. Thanks be to God! PRAYER (ALL) O God, Jesus journey to death awakens within us our own confusion and questions and pain. Our old griefs and defeats and deaths come to the surface again. We come to you now in silence and offer you our hurt and despair, our loneliness and questions, our gratitude and the wonder of our hearts as we reflect on Jesus sacrifice. CCLI # AFFIRMATION OF FAITH: We believe in God, the one who comes before us and goes behind us, creating life and opportunities to love and care for the world. We believe in Jesus Christ who walks with us into real life each day. He is God, yet human life us and experienced all life s joys and pains and challenges like we do. But his love is so great that not sin nor suffering nor even death could stop it. Today the love of Jesus lives and continues to bring new life to the world. We believe in the Holy Spirit who comes like the wind and blows in and through us to bring God s power and light to all the world. The Spirit breathes life into us, the body of Christ we call the church, and enables us to follow the way of Christ. We believe in God, who goes before and behind, with, in and through us, bringing hope and life and newness to the world. 3

FOURTH SUNDAY IN LENT WORSHIP Unearned Grace Reading the parable of the prodigal son is like looking at one of those pictures whose image changes depending on the angle at which we stand. From one angle, we are the resentful elder brother, from the other, the grateful younger. Human nature often sets us tallying up our neighbors faults and wishing to see them suitably punished. These are the times when we say, you made your bed, now lie in it or he got what was coming to him. When the guilty prosper or get off scot-free, we grumble. At such times, the idea of a merciful God offends us. Yet at other moments, we are like the younger son, realizing that we have spent everything. Like this young man, who suddenly came to himself (Luke 15:17), we become painfully aware that we are squandering the precious gifts God has given us. At such times, if we re fortunate, we decide like the prodigal: I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you (v. 18). When we admit our faults and our recklessness and acknowledge our need, unbelievably, God always welcomes us back! When we set ourselves up as judge, we say of Jesus dismissively, This fellow welcomes sinners, and we wonder if we should hang out with him at all. Yet when we are the prodigal returned, we thrill to the words: this brother of yours was dead and has come to life; he was lost and has been found (v. 32). Then, we count ourselves blessed that our God is a God of forgiveness and unearned grace. So do not worry if your image wavers.
