1 LifeLines Lord of Life Lutheran October 2016 A Note from Pastor Amanda We all know what topics we can talk about and with whom it s safe to do so. Would you discuss Islamic beliefs about jihad (holy war) at a family dinner table? Who do you talk to about the upcoming election? Do the people you talk with have the same opinions? Is it pleasant conversation? The hardest call in the Christian faith is to love your neighbor as you love yourself. It extends to so much more than being nice to one another. It means we value everything about another person: their experiences, their views, their priorities, their faith even when those things don t agree with our own. The word tolerance is used a lot. We tolerate the other person, so we don t speak evil to their face. We bite our tongues, nod, smile, and wait until they walk away before we complain about them. But Jesus doesn t ask us to tolerate our neighbor. He tells us to love them. How does that work when our views are different? How do we talk together when our experiences and our beliefs make us feel very passionately and very opposite from one another? We listen. We honor the person talking by believing their experience and viewpoint, by hearing them through before we formulate our answer, by trying first to understand and then to be understood. (This is great practice for ALL your relationships too!) We ve got some conversations coming up that may prove to be difficult for all the above reasons. Different experiences, values, and beliefs will gather around the same table as we talk through what marriage means to us and as a greater community and society. We will be challenged to love as we listen to one another, as we try to hear those who are silent, and as we work together with God s Holy Spirit. On Wednesdays in October at 6:30, our council and I invite you to be part of these conversations. They are on a rotating schedule, so you are welcome to respectfully attend the days that are convenient with your schedule. Oct 5 Session 1: Where are you at? Oct 12 Session 2: Where do we go? Oct 19 Session 1: Where are you at? Oct 26 Session 2: Where do we go? If you are not available on these Wednesdays, further conversations can be created in the coming months. 10/20/30 Club Tuesday, September 20 we traveled to the North Pole Fire Department and had an amazing tour of the platform truck and met a fully-dressed fireman!

Meet at LoL at 5:30pm for a light meal and stay to learn a new craft. Parents! We can sit back and enjoy one another s company! Oct 20- Let's explore the Fairbanks Children's Museum!

2 10/20/30 Club Tuesday, September 20 we traveled to the North Pole Fire Department and had an amazing tour of the platform truck and met a fully-dressed fireman! What a joy to watch our children stare at the lights and hug and hi-five the fireman. Don t miss out on these events! Oct 10 - Dinner and Craft night led by the Boy Scouts! Meet at LoL at 5:30pm for a light meal and stay to learn a new craft. Parents! We can sit back and enjoy one another s company! Oct 20- Let's explore the Fairbanks Children's Museum! We ll meet there at 11am and bring our lunches! If you re not a member, no worries, Lord of Life can cover you! Oct 30 - Lord of Life s Reformation Day Party! A special Sunday school class at 9am, learning about the Reformation. After worship, we have a Gross Grub and a potluck, games, prizes, candy, and a whole lot of fun! Wear your Halloween costumes and have a good time with everyone from church! The Underground (4-6 Grade) Our next meeting will be on October 16th, 4-5:30pm! Youth Group (7-12 Grade) Meets Sunday from 6-7:30pm! We ll serve God by taking care of our church building and then play McHenry Ball and flag football! Then, gather for an overnight lock in starting Sunday, October 30th at 5pm with pizza and running through noon on Monday, October 31st. (We ll arrange rides and pick up that Monday) We make dinner, talk about the rough and easy, play games, serve others, and find where God shows up! We will be meeting on: October 9 and October 23 Page 2

3 WELCA / Women s Group This month, we will participate in the congregation conversations taking place all month. Starting with our November meeting on Wednesday the 9th, women and men are invited to discuss and give feedback around the new ELCA statement on Gender Equality. If you are interested in your own book of study materials, please sign up outside the church office. We will be ordering materials in mid-october. Bible Study Every Monday at 10am Join in studying the Scriptures for the upcoming Sunday. No special insight required, just an open heart and an interest in God s Word! Fellowship Treats Janis Robertson will organize the Tirban, Peterson/Skjefte, V. Dulany, S. Boatman and Knutson Families this month! EDUCATION by Dianna Lindhag Sunday School is underway and YOU can be part of digging in to learn about Jesus life! Sign up to teach the younger elementary class for a month and use your gifts! Google Dig In Group to watch a short video about how you can tailor your own lesson plans to your comfort level adding more in-depth bible study, games or crafts during this half hour time! Or sign up to bring snacks! See the bulletin board across from the coffee downstairs or come talk to me! - Dianna Lindhag HIGH SCHOOL LUNCHES by Janis Robertson High school lunches are packed every second Friday of the month at 9:30am. Even if you are you are unable to help prepare sack lunches, the foods below would be greatly appreciated. Deliver them to the church by the Sunday before we pack them. Thank you! Great going! Reformation Sunday is coming up- October 30th- plan ahead for dressing as your favorite Reformation person, and prepare for "gross grab" snacks and lots of games for all ages after worship. Annual Meeting will be November 13th right after the morning service. Please prayerfully consider serving on Council next year. It will be exciting- the 500th year of the Lutheran church! President lead the church in planning for the future, leadership during Pastor s sabbatical Secretary record minutes of meetings and keep the church updated on happenings Education create education opportunities for all ages, organize volunteers to teach Facilities care for the physical needs of the building, organize work crews and volunteers Mission and Social Ministry find unmet needs in the church and community and mobilize! Worship and Music help create and brainstorm meaningful worship experiences (1 year) Auditing (3 yr term serving with Bill Reeves and Cheryl Park) There is a new curriculum for Sunday school called DIG IN - See Dianna for the news!
