4 Page 4 Precious Blood Cathedral Catholic Women s League General Meeting Our first General Meeting for the Fall season will be held on Tuesday September 5 at 7:00 PM in Ste Anne's Room. This will be an important meeting as we plan our Fall activities. Bazaar Attention all knitters, crocheters, quilters and crafters, as you plan projects please remember that our Bazaar is coming up in November and that we are always appreciative of your donations. Further news on the Bazaar will be in future bulletins. New School Year We wish all students returning to classes a very successful year. To those leaving to go to school out of town safe travels and good luck as you begin this new phase of your education. Children s Liturgy will reconvene on Sun. Sept. 10th. at the 11am. mass. We invite all children to join us to hear God s word and to participate in simple, varied activities. Anyone wishing to help in assisting or teaching the children, please contact Father Hamish at

8 Twenty-Second Week of Ordinary Time Sunday is the Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. We are encouraged to embrace humility. The first reading from the Book of Sirach says it simply: Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find favor with God. In Luke's gospel is a beloved story of Jesus saying, do not recline at table in the place of honor at a banquet. For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Monday is the Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the Baptist, with its own special readings. Saturday is the Memorial of Saint Gregory the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church. Our first weekday reading for the next several weeks will be from Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, offering a look at the struggles and joys of the early life of the Church in Corinth. Paul admits, I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God. This week we begin reading from Luke's Gospel, which brings us the vivid stories of Jesus' early public ministry. We will continue with Luke until Advent. Jesus teaches in the synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor, he reads from Isaiah, but his listeners wanted only to see the miracles they had heard about him. He cleanses a man of an unclean spirit - a spirit who recognizes Jesus as the Holy One of God when those around Jesus did not. He cures Simon's mother-in-law and then tells the crowds he must leave to spread the good news to other towns. As Jesus comes upon Peter, James and John, he invites the weary fishermen to lower their empty nets one more time. When they bring up nets overflowing with fish, Peter says, Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man but Jesus reassures him not to be afraid and says Peter will be catching people now. He tells them, No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. When he is criticized for allowing his disciples to pick grain to eat on the sabbath, Jesus is compassionate toward their hunger and defends them saying, The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath. On the Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time we hear Wisdom marvel at God's ways. Paul writes to his friend, Philemon, about Philemon's slave, Onesimus, who is now a convert and in prison with Paul. Paul asks that he be taken back as a son or a brother. In Luke's Gospel, Jesus tells the crowd that following him will involve radical conversion and requires that each us discern if we can prepare for the self-denial required.
