The flatpack boxes are available in both churches and St James Centre, along with a leaflet which specifies clearly what contents are and are not acceptable and how to pack the box please read that or the article in the October Chronicle carefully. You can also contribute a nominal 5 for transport costs. Please bring your packed box or contributions to church or St James Centre by this Tuesday 6 November contact Sally Hemsworth AN AFFECTIONATE LOOK AT COWLEY THROUGH THE AGES Rosanne Butler s personal telling of the Story of Cowley is published with pictures, photos and maps, price 8 and no extra charge for a signed copy - 10 if posted cash or cheque payable to Friends of St James Old School The 8 for each copy will be split 50:50 between the author and St James Church. They are available now on Sundays, at lunch club on Tuesdays and from the Parish Office best to phone and make a collection appointment or direct from Rosanne ST JAMES CHURCH (very small) CLEANING TEAM is sadly further depleted though illness It meets fortnightly on a Wednesday - next on Wednesday 31 October 9:30-11:00 to dust, wipe, vacuum and polish, so there s a range of exertion from sitting polishing brass to an energetic pushing of the vacuum cleaner. If you would like to help but can t do Wednesdays, we can negotiate please see/contact Chris Knevett PARISH MISSION GIVING FOR 2018 The PCC has as usual allocated 5% of last year s Parish Planned Giving to Christian-based charities. For 2018, this amounts to 2,292. There will be a meeting to discuss and recommend to the PCC which causes should be supported this year on Wednesday 14 November at St James Church Centre at 7:30pm. Please come with your ideas or forward any suggestions you have to Joan Coleman in advance of the meeting. Please provide the full details of the charity/fund name, address, the nature of its work etc. - on paper. 3 FAITH AND POLITICS LECTURE: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Sir Michael Dummett Theatre On Tuesday 13 November, 5:30 7:00 pm, the Bishop of Oxford will be giving the next Faith and Politics lecture. Bishop Steven will discus the risks and benefits of computers shaping our lives in the future and argue that ethics must be at the centre of the development and use of AI - with Qs and As. THEATRE VISIT : will you join us? Creation Theatre: PETER PAN at the North Wall, Summertown Saturday 5 January, 2:00 pm 25/ 20 All children, except one, grow up. A shadow at the window, a sprinkling of fairy dust and then straight on till morning; the Darling children are off on an adventure. Find out in the usual zany Creation Theatre style production On the assumption that some of you really hope to come but didn t get round to signing the list, spare tickets have been ordered and payment deferred contact Lesley Williams quickly - pay later see back page for contact details -- MOVEMBER Movember is under way it s an annual event involving the growing of moustaches/ beards during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, partcularly prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide The Parish Rector invites other male members of the Parish and friends to join him in his bid to display a splendid ly stylish example by the end of the month perchance competitively? Richard Chand is also in FLO S THE PLACE IN THE PARK Flo's (the former Florence Park Children s Centre) is run by and for the community, so of course community people are needed to help out both on a regular basis, and others on one-off occasions Some of the roles are : serving in the craft materials shop which will open for 2 hours, 3 times a week from 7 November; gardening & maintenance; communications; outreach - and there are many more! Training and regular check-ins will be in place to support you with any role you choose to take on. It's a great opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills and support this community facility. If you are interested, go along to the next volunteer meeting to find out more: Tuesday 6 November at 10:00am. For all the saints who loved your name, whose faith increased the Saviour's fame, who sang your songs and share your word, accept our gratitude, good Lord. For all the saints who named your will, and showed the kingdom coming still through selfless protest, prayer, and praise, accept the gratitude we raise. 4 COLLECTS FOR TODAY All Saints Day God of holiness, your glory is proclaimed in every age: as we rejoice in the faith of your saints, inspire us to follow their example with boldness and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Chris our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever AMEN Post Communion prayer God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN THE SAINTS are people who said yes to God s plan for them and are now in heaven. Some were children and young people, some were mothers and fathers, some were monks, priests or nuns, and some were single people. On ALL SAINTS DAY we praise and thank God for what He has done for us through these holy people. We ask the saints to pray for us that we might love our God and neighbour the way Jesus taught us. On ALL SOULS DAY, we pray for all people who have died especially those we have loved. We ask God to bring them to the joyful banquet of heaven to be with God and the saints forever.
