Atlanta Marietta District United Methodist Women Newsletter Spring 2018 THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Tamara Askew So If the old way, which has been replaced, was glorious, how much more glorious is the new, which remains forever! Since his new way gives us such confidence, we can be very bold 2 Corinthians 3:11-12 (NLT). I am so enriched by this message in this verse! I remind you of our theme this year The Power of Bold. What a great season to celebrate this BOLDNESS during the spring, which is about renewal and growth! I pray to see you at Assembly this year so that we can celebrate what God has done and will do in the excitement of United Methodist Women. The Atlanta Marietta District has been very active putting Faith, Hope and Love in Action! We have many notable events this year starting with our Mission Study, Living as a Covenant Community, led by Mary Ann Brannon. Thank you East Cobb United Methodist Women for hosting this event. Bethany United Methodist Women hosted the North Georgia Conference United Methodist Women, Faith, Fun, and Everyone Event, with our special guest, National President, Shannon Priddy. What an honor to hear her message around working together and bringing in more BOLD women to fulfill our purpose. Beth Clark was our speaker for our Lenten Day Apart Service, what a spiritual time of worship. Thank you Leland Qwest United Methodist Women for hosting this event.

I have been mediating and praying on the message our National President, Shannon Priddy so purposeful delivered at the Faith, Fun, and Everyone Event. Her message that she shared with me personally and all the other women was to share your United Methodist Women journey with other women. As I reflect on her challenge, I thought to myself Yes why not. We are living testimonials on how United Methodist Women has given us the opportunity to fulfill our purpose for Women, Children and Youth everywhere. You never know what your journey can do for other women, so let s BOLDY journey TOGETHER as we share our stories to other women and pray that they join us in putting Faith, Love and Hope in Action. Please remember to review our calendar of events and if your unit or church has any events you would like for us to attend please let us know! We would love to fellowship with you! Peace and Love my Sisters in Christ, Tamara Askew AMAR District President amarumw@outlook.com

Greetings, Beginning my new position as Treasurer this year has awarded me with new friendships and new insights on what we as United Methodist Women are doing to give support to each other here and around the world! Our 3 rd Quarter Remittance is just a few weeks away! Remember to check off your Five Areas of Giving as well as Candle burning in order to achieve a Five Star Plus Status. Remittances should be completed prior to the end of the 3 rd Quarter which is March 31 st. Thank you to all of our Unit Treasurers as well as all the Units they serve. MARCH 23, Day of Giving gifts go to the Legacy Fund, a permanent endowment that will support the mission outreach of future generations of United Methodist Women as they address the needs of women, children and youth of their day. Every new gift to the Legacy Fund on the Day of Giving will be matched by 50 percent. This means that every new $20.00 gift to the Legacy Fund made on the Day of Giving will be matched by $10.00, increasing the gift by 50 percent. Did you know that when we reach our goal of $60 million dollars we will be able to sustain Administrative costs with the interest alone! We will use 100 percent of all donations to help women and children around the world! Your contributions will help United Methodist Women continue well into the future. Have you seen the new 50 Anniversary Legacy necklace or pin? What a great way to show someone you love and support them while contributing directly to the Legacy Fund! I look forward to seeing you all soon! Blessings and Hugs, Ada Bretti AMAR District UMW Treasurer Ada.umw@gmail.com Ada Bretti

Spiritual Growth Jana Climer I joined a Disciple Four class in August of One of the lessons we studied was about the death and burial of Jesus. It was a synopsis of the four gospels and showed the different accounts of each author s recognition of the events related to Jesus death and burial. The lesson was a powerful and moving study optimized because its timing fell in the Lenten season. One name that jumped out to me was Joseph of Arimathea. He is mentioned in all four of the gospels and has many attributes. He is said to be: a rich man; a prominent, voting, member of the Sanhedrin; a man waiting for the kingdom of God; and a good and upright man. In John s Gospel we are told that Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. Can you imagine how he felt during Jesus agonizing death? After Jesus execution Joseph went BOLDLY to Pilate to have Jesus body released to him. Crucifixions are a slow painful death but Jesus death lasted about three hours. The time was so short that Pilate had his soldier find out if Jesus was already dead. Joseph made a public stand both to the Jewish and Roman leaders by taking possession of Jesus body. After Joseph got Jesus body he and Nicodemus prepared it for burial by using about 75 to 100 pounds of myrrh and aloe. The two of them wrapped the body with spices in strips of linen. Joseph and Nicodemus made a public stand to prepare Jesus body for burial. Joseph and Nicodemus placed Jesus body in Joseph s new hewn tomb which fulfilled the scripture Isaiah 53:9 states: He was assigned a grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, though he had done no violence, nor was any deceit found in his mouth. Here again Joseph made a public stand placing Jesus in his personal tomb.

Joseph of Arimathea went from being a silent disciple afraid of the Jewish leaders to a man who went BOLDLY before Pilate asking for Jesus body, preparing the body for burial, and placing Jesus body in his personal tomb. He gave up his position in the Sanhedrin and threw off his cloak of secrecy to become a dedicated public disciple of Christ and God used him to fulfill Old Testament scripture. History tells us that Joseph of Arimathea was a rich merchant of metal. This would explain how Joseph got an audience with Pilate. It is thought by some Bible historians that Joseph was the uncle of Mary, Jesus mother, and that would also explain why Jesus body was released to him. After, Jesus death Joseph is thought to preach the gospel in England with Phillip, Mary Magdalena, Lazarus and others. Historical records report that 8,000 converts were baptized in one day. It is also thought that he built at least one church in England. We can glean a lot from Joseph of Arimathea as United Methodist Women this 2018 year. Our motto is the Power of BOLD with faith, hope, and love in action. As we serve God this year we can pray for the BOLDNESS of Joseph of Arimathea when we take our stand for Jesus Christ as our savior and Lord. 10 Born On Third Base by Chuck Collins Social Action 2018 Chuck Collins' narrative of being a one percenter will surprise many readers. Collins is the great grandson of the Oscar Meyer meat company founder, at the age of 26, Chuck Collins gave away his inheritance to four different charities who help those less fortunate, which is 99% of the rest of us. Book Review by: Edna Felmlee St. Andrew UMC BORN ON THIRD BASE means when you are born, you do not have to bat to get on base. Just by being born into riches, you are on third base without having to hit the ball. In Collins view, many of the rich sons, daughters and grandchildren think and act like they actually played the game and hit the triple that put them on third base. The narrative attempts to explain why it is the responsibility of the one percenters to give back to the other 99% since gains were often made through public policies and tax loopholes. Collins shows us how everyday aspects of our lives actually perpetuate inequality. He describes ways to apply ourselves to the common good. He profiles many who have applied themselves to his focus and becoming happier in doing so.

Born On Third Base by Chuck Collins Social Action 2018 Collins describes the polarization of the war between the 1% who have 90% of the wealth with the 99% who share the remaining 10%. The war of the powerful few against the many is affecting our society and our world. He asks "do we want to live in an economic apartheid?" All evidence now suggests that too much inequality is bad for everyone even the superrich. This inequality will led to the demise of democracy. Collins writes his narrative for two audiences. First for the 1-5% of the planets wealth holders. It is an appeal to our real self-interests as these severe inequalities are bad for everyone. He urges the ones percenters to take responsibility and pay their fair share of taxes and to make investments in the United States which will broaden the wealth for everyone. The other audience must find allies among the reachable wealthy. We must find ways to engage the 1% to become partners transforming the future for everyone. This book is divided into sections which describe how the inequality can be rectified. Collins shares his personal journey as he travels across America speaking to diverse audiences. You will enjoy sharing his journey as you travel with him!

AMAR United Methodist Women joined in the fight against Human Trafficking Red Zone Fact The International Labor Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally, with hundreds of thousands in the United States. 16 The AMAR United Methodist Women joined together on February 10 th at East Cobb UMW for the AMAR District mission study of Living as a Covenant Community lead by Mary Ann Brannon. As they explored major covenants throughout the Bible, they discovered that covenantal living calls us to acts of mercy and justice, not only with those in our community, but with all-regardless of their social, political, financial, or religious standing. Through covenantal living, we are connected to God, others, and the whole creation.
