Buried in a Tomb

1 Corinthians 15: Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say, There is no resurrection of the dead?

1 Corinthians 15: If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation is in vain, and so is your faith.

1 Corinthians 15: Moreover, we are found to be false witnesses about God, because we have testified wrongly about God that he raised up Christ whom he did not raise up, if in fact the dead are not raised.

1 Corinthians 15: For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins.

1 Corinthians 15: Those, then, who have fallen asleep in Christ have also perished. 19 If we have put our hope in Christ for this life only, we should be pitied more than anyone.

Two critical questions Do you believe that Jesus physically rose from death? Why do you believe Jesus physically rose from death?

John 20: But Thomas (called Twin ), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were telling him, We ve seen the Lord!

John 20:24-28 But he said to them, If I don t see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe.

John 20: A week later his disciples were indoors again, and Thomas was with them. Even though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you.

John 20: Then he said to Thomas, Put your finger here and look at my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Don t be faithless, but believe.

John 20: Thomas responded to him, My Lord and my God!

Jude 1:22 22 And have mercy on those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them out of the fire

Fact #1 After his crucifixion, Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.

Two critical components Jesus died of crucifixion Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea

Jesus died of crucifixion

John 19: Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away.

John 19: So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him.

John 19: When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. 34 But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.

John 19: He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth.

John 19: For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. 37 Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced.

John 19: After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly because of his fear of the Jews asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away.

John 19: Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes.

John 19: They took Jesus s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews.

John 19: There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it.

John 19: They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

Jesus was buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea

Who was Joseph of Arimathea and why was Jesus buried in his tomb? Member of Jewish Sanhedrin

Luke 23: There was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, 51 who had not agreed with their plan and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.

Mark 15:43 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Sanhedrin who was himself looking forward to the kingdom of God, came and boldly went to Pilate and asked for Jesus's body.

Who was Joseph of Arimathea and why was Jesus buried in his tomb? Member of Jewish Sanhedrin Secret disciple of Jesus

John 19:38 38 After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus but secretly because of his fear of the Jews asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus s body.

Who was Joseph of Arimathea and why was Jesus buried in his tomb? Member of Jewish Sanhedrin Secret disciple of Jesus After the crucifixion, becomes a public disciple of Jesus

Why is Fact #1 significant?

Why is Fact #1 significant? It makes the resurrection account easily falsifiable.

Falsifiability is the capacity for some proposition, statement, theory or hypothesis to be proven wrong. That capacity is an essential component of the scientific method and hypothesis testing.

Why is Fact #1 regarded as historically true? It s easily falsifiable

Why is Fact #1 regarded as historically true? It s easily falsifiable The proximity of the burial account to the actual time the alleged event took place

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 3 For I passed on to you as most important what I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

This tradition probably goes back at least to Paul s fact-finding visit to Jerusalem around AD 36, when he spent two weeks with Cephas and James (Gal. 1.18). It thus dates to within five years after Jesus death. Dr. William Lane Craig

Why is Fact #1 regarded as historically true? Joseph of Arimathea is unlikely to be a Christian invention

1 Thessalonians 2: For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,

1 Thessalonians 2: who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind

1 Thessalonians 2: by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last!

Why is Fact #1 regarded as historically true? Joseph of Arimathea is unlikely to be a Christian invention There is no competing explanation

No other competing burial story exists. If the burial by Joseph were fictitious, then we would expect to find either some historical trace of what actually happened to Jesus corpse or at least some competing legends. But all our sources are unanimous on Jesus honorable interment by Joseph. Dr. William Lane Craig

For these and other reasons, the majority of New Testament critics concur that Jesus was buried in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea. According to the late John A. T. Robinson of Cambridge University, the burial of Jesus in the tomb is one of the earliest and bestattested facts about Jesus. Dr. William Lane Craig

Application Do you believe that Jesus physically rose from death?

Romans 6:1-4 1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?

Romans 6:1-4 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

Romans 6:1-4 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
