1 Women in the Word Luke 23:50 24:53 November 21, Last week we studied the crucifixion of Jesus. Read Luke 23:50-56 and list everything you learn about Joseph. See Luke 22:66 and Matthew 26:57 to review the meaning of Council. To what decision of the Council did Joseph not consent? Read John 19:4-7. From these verses in Luke along with John 19:38, what can we conclude about Joseph? 2. Read Luke 24:1-8. Describe what the women are doing and what they discover in verses 1-4. What question does the angel ask them in verse 5? What wonderful news does he give them in verse 6? And yet, the women are not joyful. What words of Jesus must they remember before they understand the truth and experience joy? Also read Luke 18: As the women go back to report in Luke 24:9-12, how do the disciples and followers of Jesus respond to the good news that Jesus is alive? Imagine yourself as a follower of Jesus in the room with the disciples and others. Describe how you picture the atmosphere in the room. Why do you think this news doesn t make sense to them? What emotions could they be feeling that would influence their disbelief?

Read carefully verses As they describe Jesus, what do they say they had hoped for? Read Isaiah 9:6,7 and Isaiah 53:3-7. Which prophecy from the Old Testament did the men remember and which prophecy had they forgotten? Why do you think they were now leaving Jerusalem? Reread Luke 24:12 and contrast Peter s actions with the two men going to Emmaus. When you are faced with troubling, confusing or hard to understand information are you more likely to try to figure it out or walk away and forget it? 5. How does Jesus respond to the two men in Luke 24:25-27? What happens in Luke 24:28-32 that convinces these two followers of Jesus that He is alive? What do they do next according to Luke 24:33-35? Think of a time you fully understood a truth about the Bible, the Christian faith or Jesus. Share with your group how you felt and what you did next.

In verse 49, what promise from the Father is Jesus going to keep? Read John 14: Every time we see the followers of Jesus struggle with doubt and confusion, the Word of God is part of the answer. What is the other part they needed before believing Jesus was alive? List every way you find the Word of God necessary today for your journey of faith. 8. Unbelievers today are still doubtful of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is puzzling and difficult to understand when we say Jesus is alive. As Believers today, how can we show the world a living Jesus? 9. Read Luke 24: The book of Luke ends with great joy! We have also seen joy throughout Luke s gospel. Write the cause of joy next to the following passages in Luke. 1:46,47 13: : :32 2:11,20 17: : : : :35-37 What are the similar themes that bring joy in the above passages? 10. Ponder the resurrection of Jesus, and let that fill you with joy. Write down your own praise for the joy of your salvation. 11. Do you have a personal prayer request to share with your small group?

4 Women in the Word November 21, 2013 Jesus THE SAVIOR FOR ONE AND ALL He is Risen! The resurrection of Jesus is the foundational truth of Christianity. Just Joseph of Arimathea Buries Jesus Luke 23:50-56 With courage, he asks Pilate for the body of Jesus to bury in Joseph s own tomb. Women are Wondering Luke 24:1-8 They take spices to the tomb, and meet two angels. One angel tells them Jesus is risen! They do not understand until they remember the words of Jesus. In confusing and difficult times, we need the of God. Disciples are Doubting Luke 24:9-12 The joyful women bring good news that Jesus is alive! It seems like nonsense to them. But Peter goes to the tomb to investigate. Two Travelers are Troubled and Hopeless Luke 24:13-35 The two travelers leave Jerusalem and set out for Emmaus without hope. Jesus teaches them the Word of God and reveals Himself. The two travelers immediately return to the others in Jerusalem with joy! In confusing and difficult times, we need other. Disciples Doubts are Dispelled Luke 24:36-49 Jesus appears. He reassures. He eats. He teaches. He commissions. Jesus says He will send the promised Holy Spirit. In confusing and difficult times, we need. And Finally Joy! Luke 24:50-53 Jesus blesses them. They worship with joy and praise God. With worship comes joy, and joy moves us to. Our Joy Today The resurrection of Jesus gives us hope. The resurrection of Jesus brings us joy! HE IS RISEN INDEED!! Key: Word Christians Jesus worship
