Resurrection Transformation 1

Matthew 27: When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. John 19: After these things Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body. 39 Nicodemus also, who earlier had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds in weight. 2

40 So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews. 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid. 42 So because of the Jewish day of Preparation, since the tomb was close at hand, they laid Jesus there. Matthew 19: And Jesus said to his disciples, Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God. 25 When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, Who then can be saved? 26 But Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. 3

Luke 5:31-32 And Jesus answered them, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. Rich and Religious!!! Two Men Joseph and Nicodemus The two hardest people to reach or come to Jesus are the rich and those who are religious. 4

All four Gospels mention Joseph Matthew s gospel tells us, When it was evening there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph Mark s gospel tells us he was a respected member of the council Luke s gospel tells us, He was a member of the council, a good and righteous man And, he had not consented to their decision and action and that he was looking for the kingdom of God. John s Gospel says, that he was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews. 5

Nicodemus is only mentioned three times in scripture. All three times are in John s Gospel. In all three occasions it is indicated that he came in the evening or at night. In his first meeting with Jesus John 3 Nicodemus comes with questions about Jesus and His miracles and how He did them. Jesus gave him the discourse on the New Birth You must be born again Nicodemus last words to Jesus, How can these things be? John 3: And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. 6

18 He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God." When Joseph showed up at the cross just before the sun is setting, he is shocked and surprised to see Nicodemus standing there with tears streaming down his face looking at the dead body of Jesus on the Cross!!!!! Can you imagine their conversation? Joseph asks, What are you doing here? Nicodemus replies, I m just as surprised to see you! 7

Both were members of the Sanhedrin. Both has known each other for years They were outstanding men and leaders in the community. They were both rich and probably done business with each other. They were both serious about their religious faith. They must have gone to church or the synagogue together for years. They would have been, most likely present for all the council meetings where the subject of Jesus and what to do with Him had come up. They would have been at the two trials of Jesus on Thursday night where the council condemned Jesus to death. (Mark 14:55; 15:1) Whole council. And maybe, neither of them voted to put Jesus to death but we have no record that either of them were willing to speak up in defense of Jesus during these trials as Jesus was mocked, ridiculed, blindfolded. They both watched in silence as others spit in Jesus face and struck him. Demanding, Prophesy, what s my name? Who struck you? (Matthew 26:67) 8

So they both must have witnessed the final trial of Jesus before Pilate and watched as the Roman soldiers mercilessly scourged Jesus with a multi-lashed whip containing imbedded pieces of bone and metal with 40 lashings. (Matthew 27:26) And watched as they pressed the crown of thorns into Jesus head, mock and spit on Him and ridicule him before they dragged Him to Golgotha. They witnessed the crucifixion of Jesus with the two thieves. They heard Jesus say, Father, forgive them, they know not what they do. They heard Jesus say to the one thief, Today, you will be with me in Paradise. They saw the bright noonday sun go black. And in that terrible darkness they heard the Saviour cry out, My God, My God why have you forsaken Me? 9

At 3pm, in the midst of the darkness, as they stood nearby, they heard the voice of Jesus one last time as He cry out, It is finished and Into thy hands I commit my spirit. And He breathe His last! And they saw Jesus die!!!!!!!!! They felt the ground quake!!!! They heard the centurion cry out, Truly this was the Son of God! They watch as the soldiers came back from Pilate to break the bones in the legs of the three men on the crosses. But when they came to Jesus and saw He was dead, one of them took his spear and thrust it into His side and out came blood and water. As the crowds melt away, they linger and think about how they had failed Jesus they were silent and had not spoken out publically I believe they, like Peter, begin to weep bitter tears of remorse for their silence. But as they begin to leave, they leave different men than when they begin their day on this Friday. Something has happen in their hearts!!!!!!!! 10

Nicodemus quietly leaves the scene of the cross and goes and purchases 75 pounds of a mixture of myrrh and aloes to clean and anoint the body of Jesus. Joseph quietly leaves the scene and goes and begs for the body of Jesus from Pilate and then purchases a large roll of clean white linen to wrap the body of Jesus in. And when he gets back, he sees Nicodemus They no doubt exchange a few words Boy, I wish I could have overheard that conversation. I m sure they both surprised that the other was there they had known each other so long. It s about time we let people know that we believe that this Jesus is the Messiah Remember, He said, He would rise again. Joseph, Hey, I have my own tomb just around the corner, I don t mind giving it to Jesus for three days. 11

They find a couple of ladders and climb up to take down the precious body of Jesus. Took it over to the garden where the tomb was and begin to gently wash it. Some believe the women who had stayed at the cross might have helped with this They wrapped clean body of Jesus in the linen, and gently carried it into the tomb, laid it there and roll a stone over the door of the tomb. Two rich, religious men Two of the most difficult persons to humble themselves for salvation. The ones who have the hardest time to speak up publically for Jesus. Their names go down in the greatest, most read history book ever, the Bible, because finally they came out of the closet for Jesus!!!!!!! 12

Today, what s keeping you from coming to Jesus? You say you don t really have the time to honor Jesus with your life and talents? You are too busy to be faithful to Jesus in Bible reading, devotion, church attendance and worship? Are you afraid of what people might think if you say, I m a follower of the despised Nazarene named Jesus! Maybe, you think today, I m too bad a sinner, God would never accept me I ve gone too far. Jesus, said in answer to the disciple s question, Who then can be saved? Nothing is impossible with God! Today, as you are confronted with the Cross of Jesus Christ you are confronted with a choice! You either receive Jesus or you reject Him! 13

Today, it s my prayer that you will open you heart to Jesus and let Him become the Lord of your life. If these two rich and religious men can get saved, so can you. Jesus, personally told Nicodemus. John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 14
