1 ST. BRENDAN CHURCH Share these articles with your friends online at 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA Tel. No. (415) November 4, 2018 Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time How One Name Can Change The World As children gear up for Halloween and families make arrangements for the cherished traditions of the winter months ahead, we begin this holiday season in mourning over another senseless act of violence. After spewing a tirade of anti-semitic venom over internet websites, Robert Bowers burst into a Pittsburgh- area synagogue last Saturday and opened fire, killing eleven innocent people and injuring six others in the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in American history. Pundits speak of the death penalty and the need for gun control, but what is also painfully clear from these heartbreaking events is that we do not know our neighbor as we should. Although the gunman lived in an apartment complex in the local area, one of his neighbors said that she could not remember ever seeing him speak to anyone in the two years she had lived there. Especially heartbreaking is the statement made by one local resident attending the interfaith service and candlelight vigil held for the victims, who said that the Squirrel Hill community where the massacre took place was the inspiration for the beloved children s television show, Mister Rogers Neighborhood. Fred Rogers... went to our church, she said, and to think that in a place where you would love your neighbor, this would happen is just... horrible. Today we begin a new message series that we re calling, Next Door: The Art of Neighboring. In this timely and relevant four-week series, we ll be looking at specific ways that we can bring God s love into our own neighborhoods. The easiest way to start doing that is simply learning the names of some of your neighbors. Indeed, a certain level of connection is established when we know someone s name. It brings the relationship to a whole different place. Likewise, it s hard to advance in a relationship or even have a conversation with someone, if we don t know his or her name. Besides, we honor people and show them respect when we know their names. We are drawn to people who make the effort and care enough to know our names and use them. Indeed, the first strategy of any hostage negotiator is to build rapport with a hostage taker by using his or her name. Although according to news reports Mr. Bowers found a community of like-minded extremists, white nationalists, and Nazi supporters on an alt-right social media website where he posted a stream of anti-jewish slurs and hate speech, I can only wonder whether anyone in his real space neighborhood actually knew his name and used it to greet him. Your assignment this week, therefore, is to get to know some of your neighbors names. We must learn from the sin of Cain in the Bible when, after killing his own brother Abel, he asked God, Am I my brother s keeper? Father Roger Gustafson, Pastor

4 Featured Article Like A Good Neighbor... St. Brendan Shows Up Last weekend, our own Sister Angela was recognized as one of the Archdiocese s Women of the Year, an honor that no one at Saint Brendan would contest she deserves. From running the small groups to visiting elderly parishioners to nurturing existing and new ministries, Sister is the epitome of a Wonder Woman for the Church. The San Francisco chapter of the National Council of Catholic Women solicited nominations from all 95 parishes in the Archdiocese. We began giving the award every two years to all of the women nominated, said event coordinator Cathy Mibach. We couldn t pick just one, not when these women, who organized ministries at their parishes, served as Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers, and more, were all so deserving. Eleven women total received the award yesterday, each supported by her parish family and friends, but no one had as big a turnout as Saint Brendan for Sister Angela. Guests from the parish filled four tables at the awards reception, according to Barbara Casey, who attended the event. When I checked in, I asked where I should go, Casey, who has worked extensively with Sister Angela on efforts for the Experienced Navigators, said. They told me, There are four tables here for Saint Brendan you won t have to walk far and you will find one. It was wonderful that so many people came out for Sister, who deserves this award more than anyone else. Hahn, who also attended the event. I absolutely adore and admire Sister Angela, who is so giving of her time to the parish, so I was thrilled to attend, Hahn said. She encouraged me to get involved with small groups, which is where I really found the true community that is Saint Brendan. Casey, who grew up in the Saint Brendan Parish family, found herself drawn into the community after the passing of her sister. I m a retired teacher, and I have time to give. Saint Brendan s is such a wonderful community that was here for me when I needed it, and I am happy to be able to return the favor. Through the Experienced Navigators, I ve been able to work extensively with Sister, so I was thrilled to be able to support her. Indeed, the turnout epitomizes the neighborly feel at Saint Brendan. In our new message series, we re learning about how to be good neighbors, Father Roger said. Although saddened that I could not attend because of an inalterable commitment, the number of people who came out to honor Sister Angela underscores just how good neighbors show up for each other. As Sister Angela remarked, I felt surrounded by the immense love of God, who is calling all of us to build a vibrant, welcoming community that reaches out to all our brothers and sisters. --Claire Kosewic, Staff Bulletin Writer The four tables that Saint Brendan filled were illustrative of the warm, welcoming community that this is, according to both Casey and Katherine
5 Stewardship Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God s gifts and shares them generously in love of God and neighbor. Stewardship is not about money or fundraising. It is a spirituality. It is a way of life. A steward recognizes that God is the source of all life and every blessing and that all gifts of time, talent, and treasure come from God. A steward is grateful for those gifts. A steward takes care of and increases those gifts and freely gives back the first and best portion of those gifts to God. Stewardship In Your Own Neighborhood: Praying For Your Neighbors The main goal of our new message series, Next Door: The Art of Neighboring, is to help all of us begin to see our neighborhoods from a different perspective. Most of us do not move into homes thinking about our neighbors and perhaps many of us choose to ignore them, especially the difficult ones. But the premise of this series is that we should start seeing our neighborhood through God s eyes. A simple way to get started is to pray for your neighbors, by name if you can. Pray for the neighbors you like, as well as the cranky, nosy, and impossible people around you. Try taking a prayer walk around your neighborhood, for instance, or pray the rosary for your neighbors while you re out running, walking your dog, or strolling down the block with your family. Over the last few weeks, we ve been reading through a letter in the New Testament called Hebrews. The overall point of the letter is that Jesus Christ, through his death on the cross, both became the perfect sacrifice for our sins and the perfect priest to offer that sacrifice on our behalf. Throughout this extended theological reflection, the author demonstrates that Christ is not like other priests who must repeatedly offer sacrifices for their own sins as well as those of the people. Instead Jesus is without sin and therefore is able to offer his one perfect sacrifice on the cross. He therefore is our eternal high priest, who lives forever to make intercession for us and to pray for us always (Heb. 7:25). Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus. 1 Thess. 5: Whatever blessings God has given you, we invite you to make a planned, proportionate, and sacrificial financial commitment to this parish and to the poor that will endure. SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK: ST. PATRICK SEMINARY By virtue of our baptisms, we all share in that one priesthood of Christ. For that reason, we also are called to make intercession and to pray for the people around us, most especially those right in our own backyard. --Father Roger Gustafson, Pastor SUNDAY COLLECTION October 28, 2018 GOAL $ 9,500 TOTAL $ 8,354 Under $ 1,146
