1 ST. BRENDAN CHURCH 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA Tel. No. (415) The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph December 31, 2017 Family Hygge Is The Hardest It s undeniable. Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is a huge hit at Saint Brendan. Over the last five weeks, we have been talking and writing about this beautiful Danish word that has become all the rage around the world, and I keep hearing echoes of how well-accepted it has become among us. People mention it on the way in or out of church, write about it in s, and send pictures as examples. The word hygge roughly translates to comfort, coziness, and warmth. If you ve been a little lax about church attendance or reading the bulletin, here s what hygge is. Picture this: a cold, dark, and snowy night outside in the bleak midwinter; you re warm and dry inside, with close friends gathered in front of a roaring fire under snuggly blankets, sipping hot spiced wine (Glögg), wearing thick winter socks, while small candles light the cozy little living space. That s hygge. The Christmas season evokes images of comfort, warmth, and togetherness, and God comforts his people during this darkest time of the year with the knowledge that the eternal Word, the Son of God, became flesh and made his dwelling among us (John 1:14), which brings hope to the human spirit for a better world. That s spiritual hygge, which we can only recognize when we slow down, prepare our homes and hearts and make space for prayer, loosen the control over our lives a bit and surrender it to God, and offer spiritual comfort to other people by making room for them. The Church around the world today celebrates the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. We hold them up each year as the model of an ideal family: Joseph protected his family; Mary committed her whole life to her Son from manger to cross; and Jesus respected and obeyed his parents. As with any model, however, the exemplar can leave the rest of us feeling a little less than. Many of us, including myself, come from dysfunctional or so-called broken families. Many kids who come for the sacrament of reconciliation confess family quarrels, fighting with siblings, and disrespecting their parents. I have seen families ripped apart because adult children fight over an inheritance, couples are unfaithful to one another, rank marital strife infects the home, or a spouse suffers from mental illness or a substance abuse problem. Indeed, comfort within our own families can sometimes be the hardest form of hygge to find. I offer the same advice I give to children in reconciliation. Remember that God gave you your family, for better or worse, and your role in the family is ordained by God. It is not accidental. Live up to it. As Saint Paul says, bear with one another. Forgive injuries, overlook insults, and bind up wounds. Don t try to change people in your family, but appreciate them for the unique person that they have become. Be grateful for the family you have because it s the only one you will ever have, and when you can t be with your family because of serious abuse or geography, find a surrogate one and love the one[s] you re with. Fr. Roger Gustafson

3 The Good News A Christmas Morning Son Rise From an sent to Father Roger by a Former Parishioner now living in another part of the world. As I m enjoying the last of the Christmas hygge here at my dad s, listening to the sounds of Christmas on the radio and mindfully enjoying the warmth and the peace and the colors (and the chocolate), I want to tell you about my metaphorical Christmas morning. I got up before everyone, checked on the cookies we left out for Santa, and headed out the door for a walk. I saw the first hint of sunrise: a deep purple glow announcing that night was over. As I walked down the hill, it brightened to a stunningly vivid scarlet, awakening an unmistakable sense of joy. By the time I reached the water, the sky had faded to bluish lavender, and I found myself longing for something more. Suddenly, intense rays of piercing gold appeared on the horizon, coalescing, growing stronger until a blinding golden ball began to rise. I could feel the warmth, but could no longer look at the brightness. On turning away, I found its warm reflection lighting up the walls and windows of the houses behind me. And even when I closed my eyes, bright images of the golden rays were there. I returned home, now in the light of day, ready to face whatever, whoever had awoken there. So yes, Christmas. It brings with it hope and the promise of joy, foretelling the dawn of glory, the coming of our Lord, who spreads the warmth and light of His love throughout the earth and gives us fortitude to move forward in our day, our year, our lifetime. I m sad now to leave here, but am thankful for the joy I ve experienced, and the lessons I ve learned for the next Christmas season: hurry less, stress less, live and love more.

4 The Good News Really, Really Practical Ways To Create a Home Altar As part of the Saint Brendan Small Bytes speaker series, internationally-acclaimed author and artist, David Clayton, spoke on December 13 about ways to create a beautiful space for prayer in our homes. During an interactive session, he explained the why s and how s of creating a home altar. To listen to Professor Clayton s complete talk, visit our website at scroll down and click the button that says, Listen to Talks. In the meantime, here are some really practical ways to get started on turning your home into a domestic church and a house of prayer. Finding The Right Place Praying At Your Home Altar Like the ancient Chinese art of feng shui, finding the right place and orientation for your home altar is the first step. In her blog, Katie Warner suggests selecting a spot that is easily accessible to everyone, perhaps in the family room or another common area. You can use any surface, such as a table, book shelf, mantle, or other noticeable nook. In his talk, David Clayton, suggested that the altar should be oriented so that it is facing East, if possible, because facing East is a symbol of our hope in the risen Christ. Adorning Your Home Altar The next step is to decorate your prayer space, so that it will be attractive and call you to prayer each time you pass by the area. Use linens to dress up the surface of the altar. You can use a regular table cloth or even purchase special items in a dollar store to add some color during Advent, Lent, and special feasts. Professor Clayton suggested including at least three items: a crucifix; an image or icon of the Madonna (Mary holding the infant Jesus); and a picture of Jesus after he was resurrected from the dead. You can also include other sacred objects, such as the Bible, prayer cards and books, statues, a Rosary, candles, blessed salt, incense, and even Holy Water. Now that you ve found the right place for your prayer space and adorned it with linens and inspiring sacred objects, don t just admire your creation as another form of home decoration. Spend some quality time praying there, both individually and as a family. If you have children, gather there after dinner to pray. Light some candles, read a story from a children s Bible. Ask your children to pray for something they need and for something for which they are grateful. Do the same yourself. Professor Clayton also suggested singing a song or a chant around the altar. It can be as easy as praying the Our Father using a simple chant form like at Mass. Or just put on some sacred music and listen to it together. Even when you are not specifically praying in front of the altar, reverence your little prayer space throughout the day. Take little moments to look at the altar and bless yourself with the sign of the cross or a quick prayer as you pass by, turning your heart to Jesus and acknowledging Mary as the Queen of the Family. A Few Examples

5 Stewardship Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God s gifts and shares them generously in love of God and neighbor. Stewardship is not about money or fundraising. It is a spirituality. It is a way of life. A steward recognizes that God is the source of all life and every blessing and that all gifts of time, talent, and treasure come from God. A steward is grateful for those gifts. A steward takes care of and increases those gifts, and Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the temple forty days after his birth, in order to dedicate him to the Lord, as prescribed by the Law of Moses. In that tiny child, one of many who must have been dedicated that day, an old man and woman, Simeon and Anna, saw in that baby the future of Israel. In a similar way, every human being brought into the world will somehow shape the future. But the story always begins in the family. The family is the nucleus of each human being. It was from within this cell that each individual was brought into the world, formed into the unique person that he or she is to become, and shaped for the special mission and destiny God has in store for him or her. Without a family in which to incubate each of these aspects of every human being, the masterpiece God intended in each human being would never fully take shape. Stewardship is the grateful acknowledgement that every gift is from God and the desire to return to God the fruits of every one of those gifts. No greater fruit can be borne than that of the beginning of a human life from the moment of conception. May we treasure each of our lives and discover new ways to offer ourselves totally and completely to the Lord by growing spiritually and devoting ourselves to following Christ as his disciples. This Christmas season, cherish the gift of family. Give thanks to God for whatever family you have, and, as Saint Paul says, bear[] with one another and forgiv[e] one another and over all these put on love. --Father Roger Gustafson, Pastor In the first reading from the Book of Genesis, the Lord promised to make Abraham s reward very great. Of course, the greatest gift he gave to this man of faith, who left his kinsfolk and traveled to a strange land at God s command, was the gift of his son, Isaac, who was born to Abraham and Sarah very late in life. Yet, the Lord also showered Abraham with many other gifts as well, including a vast amount of property and financial resources. Whatever financial blessings God has given you, this holiday season, we invite you to make a planned, proportionate, and sacrificial financial commitment to this parish and to poor that will continue throughout the year. The biblical standard is a tenth of our income, before taxes or anything else is taken out, half to the Church and half to the poor. It s a huge step and takes trust, but we can never out give God. NO SECOND COLLECTION NEXT WEEK Offertory figures not included because collection count will not be completed until January 2, 2018, so that our staff and volunteers can enjoy a muchdeserved break.
