1 ST. BRENDAN CHURCH 29 Rockaway Avenue San Francisco CA Tel. No. (415) Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 Mass Communication: Are You Really Listening? On a long journey home, Jesus passes through the region of Samaria inhabited by people considered to be the ethnic and religious rivals of the Jews. He stops at a well for some water and encounters a Samaritan woman. A story of faith ensues, as Jesus leads her on a journey to new life in the Spirit. The stages of her faith development mirror the spiritual growth each of us experiences when we are willing to listen to God s Word and seek to encounter Christ in his Church. Since drawing water normally was done with other villagers in the morning or evening, the presence of the Samaritan woman at the well, alone in the heat of the day, suggests that she had something to hide. Indeed, we later learn that her lifestyle was irregular. Most of us come to church with something to hide from God, others, or ourselves. But when we choose to connect within the community, open up and share our pain, we begin a journey to a better life. Jesus first asks the woman for a drink, but he actually is thirsting for more than regular water. He wants to give her something far greater than the physical water for which she had come to the well. He longs to give her spiritual water that will satisfy her completely. As we learn to connect with other believers, we begin to experience healing in the living waters of Christ that move us away from a superficial desire, like consumers, merely to quench our thirst for a moment to a deeper commitment of faith as a disciple. Over the course of their discussion, Jesus foretells a future when the whole world will come to worship the Father in a new way. True worship, he says, is in Spirit and truth. The Mass today is the greatest form of worship ever known. We pray to the Father through the truth of Christ in the Holy Spirit. And when we break out of our spiritual isolation and pray together, we cannot help but come to know the Lord more fully. Soon the woman comes to see Jesus as more than a man, a prophet, or even the Messiah. He eventually reveals his divinity by using the divine name given to Moses in Exodus 3:14 ( I am ). Similarly, we come to church and participate in small groups to grow in faith and begin to see Jesus for who he really is. At the end of the story, the woman leaves her water jar and goes into town to tell her neighbors about Jesus and many more came to believe in him. After connecting with others at church, praying together at Mass, finding healing in the community, and growing in faith, then we too are ready to love others by inviting them to encounter and know Jesus. This week in our message series, Mass Communication, we are learning how important it is to listen to God s Word each week. Just as Jesus led the woman on her spiritual journey, the Church helps us to connect, pray, heal, grow, and love. But only if we are really listening. Fr. Roger Gustafson

3 The Good News More Than Storytelling By Manolito S. Jaldon Jr., Director of Evangelization & Faith Formation, Saint Brendan Parish As part of our message series, Mass Communication, each week we will summarize the part of the Mass preached about in the previous Sunday s homily. This week, the spotlight is on the Liturgy of the Word. At the beginning of our message series, Bishop Justice stressed the importance of putting on Christ together as we gather each Sunday. Father Reyes also reminded us that we are not alone in our brokenness when we enter into the Penitential Rite at the beginning of Mass. We now focus on the Liturgy of the Word, which includes three distinct movements. First, the Word is proclaimed in the assembly, which is a practice rooted in the Jewish liturgical tradition of breaking open the Word. Jewish children historically would copy passages of Scripture onto honeycomb tablets and then later enjoyed eating the honey. It was a reminder of how sweet and delicious God s Word is to his people. This practice echoes the words of the prophet Jeremiah: When I found your words, I devoured them; your words were my joy, the happiness of my heart (15:16). God s Word is not recited at Mass as an historical text. Rather, the proclamation of the Word is the dynamic and relevant voice of God calling his people to himself. It recounts salvation history, the early Church, and the public ministry of Jesus Christ. All of this is woven together through text, teaching, and chant. Second, the assembly reflects on the Word in silence. As opposed to the noise of everyday life, the liturgy welcomes silence as a way of being attentive to God s voice. Silence at Mass allows us to deeply reflect, even if just for a moment, on what was spoken to us, what we have sung, and what we contemplate in the sacred art present in God s house. Third, the assembly responds to the Word. After passages from Scripture have been read, the priest preaches the homily. Indeed, his first responsibility is to preach God s Word. He spends his days praying with the Scriptures and studying the Word, in order to make it both relevant to our lives and consistent with the Church s profession of faith through the centuries. As the priest responds to God s Word in his teaching, we also respond by professing the ancient formula of all the eternal truths we believe in the Nicene Creed. We then respond by bringing petitions to the Father for the needs of the Church, for public authorities and the salvation of the whole world, for those burdened by any kind of difficulty, for the local community, and for the dead, a custom adapted from Solemn Vespers. The Word proclaimed, reflected upon, and responded to are the three key movements of the Liturgy of the Word. As we listen, may we never harden our hearts, but rather approach the Lord with praise and thanksgiving. For each time we celebrate the Word, we are like the disciples walking with the Risen Christ on the road to Emmaus, to the breaking of the bread.
4 The Good News Prayer in the Mercy Tradition By Lisa Rosenlund, Saint Brendan Parish Manager Each week, we summarize a specific style, form, or approach to prayer, using the highly-acclaimed book by Robert J. Wicks, Prayer in the Catholic Tradition: A Handbook of Practical Approaches (Franciscan Media 2006). In this article, you ll learn more about prayer in the Mercy tradition. The Order of Mercy was begun by two Irishwomen, Catherine McAuley and Mary Ann Doyle. Catherine was fifty-three years old at the time of the founding of the first House of Mercy in Dublin in She had a difficult life. Having been orphaned as a young woman and left to care for her younger siblings, she was fortunate that a Quaker couple, the Callaghans, stepped in to help her. Though they didn t approve of her Catholic beliefs, they grew to admire her commitment to her faith and to serving the poor. The Callaghans unexpectedly left her an inheritance, which she used to found the Order. Many people ridiculed her and referred to the House of Mercy as Kitty s Folly. Once the Order had been firmly established, Catherine asked Mary Ann to become the leader of the first Mercy convent outside of Dublin, which was located in Tullamore. There was tension between the two women and their followers, with some preferring the trappings of a cloister and others finding them pretentious. Mary Ann adopted traditional convent devotions and ascetical practices at the Convent in Tullamore. Catherine had a great sense of humor and would tease Mary Ann by referring to her as Her Reverence or the Divine Mother. When describing Tullamore, Catherine joked, Mother Mary Ann has met with her beau ideal of a conventional building at last, for our rooms are so small, that two cats could scarcely dance in them. (314) Catherine also believed that rigid observance of rituals and formal prayer led not to holiness, but to isolation and inflexibility. Her viewpoint, which has prevailed in the Mercy tradition, is that prayer and action should be seamlessly integrated, resulting in a wholeness of life. In her instructions to her Sisters, she said that they should be like the compass that goes round its circle without stirring from its center. Now our center is God from Whom all our action should spring as from their source and no exterior action should separate us from him. (312) Catherine s many writings demonstrate her success in modeling the goal she described, namely serving the poor, while simultaneously achieving an intimate relationship with God. She also united the Order with her writings which made the Sisters feel that they all belonged to the same faith tradition. In addition to numerous informal letters to the various members of her Order, Catherine penned a more formal publication called the Foundation Circulars. We can take a page out of Catherine s book to reach our goal of integrating work and prayer. Embrace the discipline to write and reflect consistently this Lent. In particular, consider bringing a journal to Mass and writing down whatever you hear the voice of God speaking to you during the greatest prayer ever known.
5 Stewardship Stewardship is the grateful response of a Christian disciple who recognizes and receives God s gifts and shares them generously in love of God and neighbor. Stewardship is not about money or fundraising. It is a spirituality. It is a way of life. A steward recognizes that God is the source of all life and every blessing and that all gifts of time, talent, and treasure come from God. A steward is grateful for those gifts. A steward takes care of and increases those gifts and freely gives back the first and best portion of those gifts to God. Despite their miraculous exodus from slavery in Egypt by the mighty hand of God, the ancient Israelites soon grumbled against Yahweh. As they were wandering in the wilderness, they complained to Moses about the lack of water in the austere desert conditions surrounding them. The place at which the people rebelled against God is identified in the first reading today as Meribah, which means quarreling, and Massah, which means testing. As the bible recounts, there were at least ten different protests against God in the desert. The people not only complained twice about the lack of water (Exodus 17:3-7; Numbers 20:1-5), but also about bitter water (Exodus 15:22), hunger (Exodus 16:1-4), the quality of food provided (Numbers 11:33), the leadership of Moses on three occasions (Numbers 12:1-12; 14:10; 16:22), how difficult it would be to enter the Promised Land (Numbers 14:1-10), and fatigue from traveling (Numbers 21:4-5). They often longed for their old life back in Egypt, having forgotten the cruel slavery they had suffered. Stewardship is a spirituality that recognizes everything as a blessing, including hardship. It is a way of life rooted fundamentally in trust of God s providential care, even in suffering. As Saint Paul writes, I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake... in accordance with God s stewardship given to me (Colossians 1:24-25). If you are suffering, remember that you are not alone. Many of the psalms and stories in the bible reflect the adversities so many people of faith throughout history have suffered. They shared their pain with God and with friends. They offered their suffering for others. They even complained. Whether or not an end to your difficulties is in sight, remember that God can see the other side, even when you cannot. Try not to rebel outright like the Israelites. Harden not your heart, as the psalm today says, but steward your suffering well and trust God to bring you through.
