2 A Message From The Pastor... Dear Brothers and Sisters, The first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles takes place in the period of time after the Ascension of the Lord and just before the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Church at Pentecost. Sound familiar? Yep, that is exactly where we are right now. On Thursday, we celebrated the Ascension. Next Sunday, we will celebrate Pentecost. So here we are, with the Apostles, right in the thick of it. The Apostles have gathered with a large number of believers for an important reason. Peter is the unquestioned leader here, just as his successor, the Holy Father is for us. He has gathered them to choose a replacement for Judas, who betrayed Jesus. They need to replace Judas so that there are again twelve apostles. Twelve is an important number. It is used 187 times in the Bible. There are twelve sons of Jacob and twelve tribes of Israel, twelve gates of the New Jerusalem described in the Book of Revelation. Lots of twelves. It means perfection, completeness, and authority. So they need twelve. But, Peter doesn t use any of these reasons for needing a twelfth. Peter says, we need someone to become with us a witness to His Resurrection. A witness to the Resurrection. What does this mean? It means one who can tell others about Jesus for sure. But to be a witness isn t just that, right? We talked about it a few weeks ago with LeBron James and the city of Cleveland. A witness is one who is a part of the story. One who is all in. One whose life is filled with the life of Jesus. Their life is filled with life more than death. Can you say that about yourself? Are you a witness to the Resurrection? I don t know if I am. Sometimes I am I think. But sometimes my life is filled with stresses and worries and anger and avoidance. Filled with the Resurrection? Not always in my case. How about yours? The Gospel today is this beautiful prayer of Jesus. Consecrate them in truth, Jesus says. Truth. That is a big word. An important word. But maybe the second reading tells us the most important, foundational truth for us to know. God loves each of us. God loves you! Do you know that? Do you believe that? Does that seep out of your bones every time you meet someone? Every time? God loves you. God loves them. Believing this and living in this truth is to be the kind of witness the Peter is looking for in the first reading. Are you a witness? The candles around the altar are lit in honor of such witnesses. Our moms. For me, there is no one who let me know I was loved more than my mom. No matter what. Unquestioned love. Don t get me wrong, she thought I was a jerk sometimes, but she loved me. I felt it in my bones. My mom was a witness to the Resurrection. A witness to the truth of God s love for me. I bet most of yours were to. How about you? Are you a witness? Does God s love for you seep out of you when you meet someone? When someone asks you to move down the pew so they can sit? We are all witnesses to something. Think about the way you live. Are you a witness to the truth of God s love for you and for those you meet? Peace and Love, Fr. It is a good time to remember the Patron Saint of Farmers, St. Isidore, whose Feast Day is Tuesday, May 15. St. Isidore was born in Spain, about 1175, and farming was to be his labor, working for the same landowner his whole life. While he walked the fields, plowing, planting, and harvesting, he also prayed. Isidore had three great loves: God, his family, and the soil. Isidore understood clearly that, without soil, the human race cannot exist too long. This insight may explain why he had such a reverent attitude toward his work as a farmer. Isidore and Maria often brought food to the poor and prayed with them. During his lifetime, Isidore had the gift of miracles. If he were late for work because he went to Mass, and angel was seen plowing for him. More than once he fed hungry people with food that seemed to multiply miraculously. He died after a peaceful life of hard labor and charity. Even after his death, he helped those in need. In the 1600s when the King of Spain was near death, people processed to his room, carrying Isidore s incorrupt body, and the king recovered. Today Isidore is honored in Spain as one of the country s greatest saints, and he is also honored in the rural United States. He is the patron of farmers and of Madrid, the capital of Spain. 6 This week s School Student of the Week is: ASHLYN ZALIPONI Ashlyn is a five-year-old big sister, and she is enrolled as a Kindergarten student at St. Wendelin School. Ashlyn takes great care with everything she does in class. Outside of school she enjoys soccer, karate, and swimming! She likes to play with her stuffed raccoon and draw with her sister.
