1 Trinitarian The Newsletter for the Congregation & Friends of Holy Trinity and St Saviour Upper Chelsea February - March 2013 A Reflection for Lent Be Still and know that I am God I have recently led a Quiet Day for a parish in north London. During Lent the clergy took part in our own silent retreat. So I led one, and received one. I have to say it was a challenge for me as I had so much going on in the parish and in my head. But at the end of the day I felt renewed and refreshed. So often Jesus took his disciples away from the busyness of their lives in order to be quiet and listen to God. As an extrovert I get my energies from other people but I need time to enjoy my own company and focus on my relationship with God. On an international scale, as we look at the conflicts and wars in war torn parts of the world - such as Afghanistan and Syria, what a joy it would be to encourage a quiet day so as to bind up the wounds and offer healing and seek alternatives to conflict. Being quiet can be energizing. Our quiet day leader invited us to see the silence as a visit to a spring of water and quoted appropriately St Ephrim of Syria the quiet place offering spiritual drink in the desert So often Jesus took his disciples away from the busyness of their lives in order to be quiet and listen to God. The psalmist tells us to Be still and know that I am God. In Hebrew Be still is better translated as Be quietened. I am so grateful for the oases which both St Saviour s and Holy Trinity provide for both members of our congregation and the community as a whole; through prayer, studying the scriptures, being inspired by sacred music, and the ministry of hospitality. I therefore encourage everyone to engage in the

In future the Trinitarian will be an epublication delivered by . Fear not though, a printed version will still be sent out to those who would like to receive the publication by post. The printed version will also be available to pick up at the Welcome Desk. All the hard work put in to facilitate the conversion has meant that this issue has had to be published late and we apologise for the inconvenience caused. David Goode is Organist and Head of Keyboard at Eton College, where he presides over a unique collection of historic instruments and teaches some of the UK's most talented young organists; he combines this with a concert career that takes him to all parts of the world. The Music Department at Holy Trinity Church, in partnership with Sussex House School, are initiating an exciting new development of working with two young talented musicians who display exceptional aptitude, skill and ability in organ playing. The Organ Scholars will have opportunity to practice on the Holy Trinity organ (now the largest church organ in London) and share the organ bench with our organist, Oliver Lallemant, at the 11am Sung Eucharist. From time to time, the young Organ Scholars will have opportunities to play some organ pieces before worship begins, during Communion and a voluntary at the end of worship. Our first two Organ Scholars will be Robbie Winter and Hamish Fraser.

3 Page 4 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour Capital Vision 2020 Where there is no vision, the people perish Proverbs 29:18 The Church of England in the Diocese of London has a vision of a church that is in 2020: Christ centred and outward looking and more confident in speaking and living the gospel of Jesus Christ. More compassionate in serving our communities with the love of God. More creative in reaching new people and places with the Good News in the power of the Spirit. Fr Rob has been invited to join a Diocesan working group responding to the challenges of how the Church in the Diocese of London can engage with London s cultural life. This work will include developing ideas on how to support, encourage and build Christian witness and community in and through Arts, Culture and Sport The Parochial Church Council will be responding to the exciting challenges of Capital Vision 2020 and praying for the guidance of the Holy Trinity in discerning how we can turn Vision into Action within the mission and ministry of the Church in the Parish of Holy Trinity and St Saviour. Their exits and their entrances Shakespeare s plays are being used to improve the prospects of London pupils. Report by Honor Bayes published in the Church Times Intermission were very proud to be featured on the cover of The church times. Read the article in which they discuss the benefits of their new theatre in education company as well as gaining an insight into how Intermission was born and what lies ahead for this exciting company. january/features/features/their-exits-andtheir-entrances Page 5 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour Is the BRF (Bible Reading Fellowship) Lent Book for It is written by The Rev d Dr Joanna Collicutt, Lecturer in Psychology and Spirituality at Ripon College Cuddesdon. Dr Collicutt is also Oxford Diocesan Advisor for the Spiritual Care of Older People. The book contains daily Bible reflections for Lent and Easter on the Lord s Prayer. Printed for each day: a Bible reading, Biblical reflection and Prayer. It is an ideal book to accompany us on our spiritual journey through the weeks of Lent and Easter. The Introduction to the book outlines what we can expect to discover on the journey. In these Bible readings for Lent and Easter, Joanna Collicutt shows how growing as a Christian is rooted in the prayer Jesus gave us. As we pray the Lord s Prayer, we express our relationship with God, absorb gospel values and are also motivated to live them out. As we pray to the father, in union with the Son, through the power of the Spirit, so we begin to take on the character of Christ. The Holy Week readings encourage us to pause, watch and wait at this special season; commentary is kept to a minimum and we spend time reflecting, in the light of the Lord s Prayer, on Luke s description of Christ s passion and resurrection. Dr Collicutt explains the origin of the book. This book arises from my increasing awareness that the Lord s Prayer contains all that Christians really need to know; it is the very essence of the gospel My prayer is that you will have a sense of the great privilege that has been granted to us of holding precious gem in our hands, of being able to delight in its radiance, play with its many facets, plumb its depths, gain a sense of peace and security from its touch, and in so doing deepen our awareness of our union with Christ. 4 Page 6 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour LOCAL CHURCH, LOCAL SCHOOL The Rev d Graham Rainford (Chairman of Governors) Throughout the Diocese of London, over 52,000 school children are educated in church schools. Within our parish, Holy Trinity CofE Primary School is an important part of God s mission. Margaret Withers, in an excellent BRF publication Local Church, Local School reminds us that a school is far more than a building. It is a community created to enable children to learn and to be taught. It contains people of all ages and backgrounds: pupils, teachers, teaching assistants, non-teaching staff, parents, governors and members of the local community including the local Church. In the Autumn Term 2012, Holy Trinity CofE Primary School received its latest Ofsted Report. In the Report, the inspection team declared This is a good school. A good school is effective in delivering outcomes that provide well for all its pupils needs. Pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education, training or employment. Ofsted Teaching is good because lessons are well planned with clear structure. Resources are very carefully designed to motivate pupils and capture their interest in their learning. Behaviour is good. Pupils feel safe and enjoy their time at this happy and secure school. They feel that bullying is rare and are confident that they are well supported by staff. Leaders ensure that subjects are planned effectively to support good achievement in English and mathematics. The school makes good use of the local area to enable pupils to take part in trips. Governors have a good knowledge of the school. They provide an equal balance of support and challenge. They have a clear understanding of what the school does well and what it needs to do to improve further. School leaders provide clear strategies. They are carefully focussed on continued improvement. Disabled pupils and those with special educational needs make outstanding progress in English and mathematics through very well designed support and guidance. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is promoted through a very wide range of opportunities and activities. Report Summary The achievement of pupils is good The quality of teaching is good The behaviour and safety of pupils are good The leadership and management are good The governance of the school is good We congratulate the whole community of our Church School on achieving such an excellent Ofsted report and rejoice in our partnership together in the care, education and nurture of our young people. Page 7 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour Rob and Janine visit Bishop Michael in New York (previous Rector of Holy Trinity at present interim Rector at Church of the Heavenly Rest, 5th Avenue, New York) Janine and I were delighted to be invited by Bishop Michael to visit him in New York. He is at present Interim Rector at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, 5th Avenue and we had the great pleasure of staying with him in the church s beautiful apartment on 5th Avenue overlooking Central Park. We were looked after so wonderfully by Bishop Michael of course, Roy Hyslop who is helping the Bishop with administration and Soon Han Choi who began his training for the priesthood at Holy Trinity and is gaining experience in New York as he awaits ordination to the priesthood. Bishop Michael asked us to speak of the Ministry to inner-city young people as part of the work of Intermission at St Saviour s as an encouragement to his congregation and to foster the relationship of our churches across the pond. We prayed, worshipped, ate, sang round the piano, saw the sights, laughed and generally had the most wonderful time together. Bishop Michael will be returning to London later this year when a new Rector has been selected. His congregation will be sad to say goodbye to him as everyone spoke of their deep appreciation for his ministry during the year. 6 Page 10 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour Page 11 Trinitarian Holy Trinity and St Saviour and In 2004 the Chaplain of the Great Ormond Street hospital wrote to ask if London would be prepared to provide coffee, cake and non-medical conversation to parents living in the Hospital with their sick children. Some people can be there for six months to a year, others come and go - it is almost like a second home for some. The Chapel is very ornate, with crystal chandeliers and beautiful mosaics, built at the time of the Oxford movement, who restored to the Anglican Church all that the puritans had thrown out. There is a sitting area outside the chapel with the chaplain s office and kitchen adjacent. It is in the sitting area that we set up table and chairs with homemade cakes, tea and coffee. The day always begins with prayers in the Chapel at 10.30am, so the MU Team arrives at 10.15am to set up. Every Tuesday, Mothers' Union members provide coffee and homemade cakes in the Chapel at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children for parents, carers and staff. This provides a place away from the atmosphere of the wards to relax and chat to someone about everyday things. The main qualification is to be a good listener, as often parents want to talk about their children, while others just want normal conversation. We meet some extraordinary people who live with very difficult problems. One young couple, with a girl of six and a boy of two, had been living there for eight months. The two year old was waiting for a heart transplant while being kept alive attached to a Berlin Heart (the size of a washing machine). His parents could travel round the hospital with him in a push chair with the machine but if they wanted to leave the building they had to be accompanied by two nurses. The little girl was about to have her seventh birthday and all she wanted was to go to Pizza Hut with her brother. Everything was arranged with Pizza Hut so that the machine could be plugged in, but if it rained on the day, the outing would be called off. We made it a day of prayer for fine weather, so it could go ahead. During this time, both children were being home educated, and on this particular occasion the little girl asked if she could play in the playroom, mother looked at her watch said Maths, how she managed to cope with school work as well as a very sick child leaves us all speechless. The little chap received his new heart just after his third birthday; he was the longest surviving person on Berlin Heart in this country. A young mother came down one Tuesday morning, she had a three year old and twins of three weeks one of whom was in the hospital, she poured out all the problems to those on duty that day, the then following week she appeared again in a very distressed state. She had been told there was to be a case conference that afternoon, but she knew in her heart that it would say it was best to let the baby die. It was the week of the Tottenham Riots and she couldn t allow her husband to drive through the area with two small children in the car. She said she was walking up and down when suddenly she remembered it was Tuesday, the mothers union would be there. The baby didn t die till the Thursday by which time his daddy and brothers had come to say goodbye. This is but a glimpse of the mission and ministry of the Mothers Union at Great Ormond Street Hospital. It is good to know that some members of our Parish Branch are now active in this valuable work. PREPARATION OF NEW ELECTORAL ROLL (2013) Church of England requires that each Church Electoral Roll is to be completely renewed every six years. In our Parish of Holy Trinity and St Saviour the preparation of the new Electoral Roll will be made during the next few months. The new Roll is to be completed not less than 15 days or more than 28 days before the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (30 th April 2013). Application forms will be available either at the Electoral Roll desk on Sundays or from the Parish Office during the week. Even if your name is already on the Electoral Roll, you still need to complete an application form to ensure that your name will be included on the new Electoral Roll (2013).
